In recent years our understanding of the cornea’s role in glaucoma has evolved substantially. Initially thought to only impact IOP measurement accuracy, we now know that the cornea itself provides us with independent information related to glaucoma risk. Properties such as corneal hysteresis are now considered to be essential in glaucoma risk assessment. In addition, corneal biomechanical properties influence tonometer accuracy more than corneal thickness alone - and modern tonometry methodologies are capable of overcoming these complex variables.
Nathan Radcliffe, MD, of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, New York Eye Surgery Center is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Dr. Radcliffe is regarded as a leader in the field of glaucoma. Having worked closely with industry and other researchers for more than 15 years, Dr. Radcliffe is among the most knowledgeable people in the world on the subject of corneal biomechanics and the role of these properties in glaucoma decision making. More recently he has become one of the world’s foremost authorities on minimally invasive, “microincisional”, glaucoma surgery.
Dr. Radcliffe has published dozens of peer-reviewed publications and is editor of Glaucoma Physician Magazine. He is committed to teaching others, from residents to experienced surgeons alike, and has given hundreds of lectures to thousands of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists in 40 states and over a dozen different countries.
