Mild myopia & glasses since my mid 20's. No more myopia after cataract surgery a few years ago at age 81. But still have presbyopia (+3.25) and current prescription includes +0.50 sphere correction. Definitely need glasses for reading/close-up, but why is it so comfortable wearing them full time rather than not (progressive lenses), even though my distance vision is 20/20?

This is great - super helpful. In 10 years of going to the same eye doctors office, they've never offered to share my vision or prescription measurements. I finally asked this year as I'm trying to wear bifocals and wanted to understand how they're configured. Would love to see content on how bifocals/progressives are configured and measured - and if you haven't already, how glasses should fit, eg when do you need to have the ear pieces adjusted, or the angles of the ear pieces to the lens frames. And - curious how many visits to the eye doc should it take to get the right vision correction? Every year I have to go back multiple times - strength of prescription given is often far too strong. I'm trying really hard to learn as much as I can to help 'correct' when the script is off (and truth be told I don't have time to go to the eye doc 5 and 6 times a year just for 1 pair of glasses)

Thanks great video, but you lost me at the conversion section at the end. What I'd really like to figure out is how to determine the Sphere or Add numbers to correct a mismatched focal length in a pair of specs. For example, a computer screen at arms length is sharp for the Left eye yet I need to lean forward about half that distance for it to be sharp for the Right eye. Do I need to increase the SPH + number or reduce it to enable the Right eye to see text sharp at arms length? Thx :)

My eye doctor still can’t get my right eye prescription right after 3 times. Seems we can get it right in the office, but when the glasses come….blurry vision at certain distances that don’t match my left eye. They check the glasses and the prescription matches. I do use line bi-focals. After 3 times I gave up and will wait until December when I can get new glasses.

What can cause an axis value to change over a 5-month period? I am experiencing poorly corrected vision in my left eye. I had the 5-month-old glasses validated by my ophthalmologist and he tells me they are spot on from the Feb 2024 script. I had another refraction performed today (7/29) and the axis has changed from 171 to 010. The technician performing the refraction told me that this was likely the reason for the poor vision. Thanks in Advance

I suppose I should pay attention to prescription numbers. I have two pairs of glasses. One pair is slightly curved/mostly flat. The other is curved oakley prescription sunglasses. I only truly noticed recently that the oakley sunglasses shift my left eye inward. They move letters ever so slightly inward. (astigmatism left eye only). I'm thinking they are acting like prism glasses given the information presented in the video. Probably explains the random headaches I get when going between the two.

@SluggishDuck
@SluggishDuck 4 месяца назад
Many people refer to 'perfect' vision as '6/6' or '20/20' (US notation measured in feet), but this is not strictly true - these terms refer to 'average' vision. If you achieve a vision measurement of 6/6, this means that you can see at a distance of 6m what an average person also sees at the same distance.

Hi Good Morning And Thank You For Sharing I Have A Question I Recently Went To Have An Eye Exam I Continue To Get Blepharitis I Get The Sensation Of Something Gritty In My Eye My Doctor Prescribed A Medication Call Xdemvy Will This Help And My Other Question Is Sometimes I Can Look At Certain Objects They Look Like Wavy What Is That ?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much! Blepharitis is very common and some people are more prone to getting it than others. Xdemvy is specifically for a certain type of blepharitis that is challenging to get rid of. But in my experience, Xdemvy works like a charm. For the other question, wavyness in the vision can occur for multiple reasons, from anything such as an unstable tear film to migraine headaches to more serious retinal conditions. I wish I could help more but this is something to ask a local doctor about so they can examine the eyes and give a diagnosis. Hope that helps.

I have always wondered why eye doctors tell you to wear your distance glasses all day, every day, EVEN when doing close up work. What is the reason for this if people who are nearsighted can see up close?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 3 месяца назад
Some people can take off the distance glasses but it depends on the status/ pull of the eye muscles. For myself, I’m so nearsighted that if I take my glasses off, or don’t wear my contact lenses, then I can see things up close near my face but to keep things single I have to close my eyes. Otherwise I go cross- eyed and start to see double .

During my eye exam, my PD was measured but not written down on my prescription. Before my exam, I checked online (College of Optometrists) that PD is part of the prescription. This may only be true depending where you live in the world. I reminded the staff, doctor, & optician that they are required to provide me with the PD since I paid for an eye exam & a pair of eyeglasses. They still did not give it to me. So I told them I am not leaving until I get it.😉 I got it. Then proceeded to walk through the shop & buy eyeglasses online.😁

Sounds like the optometrist wrote the prescription in minus cylinder and the ophthalmologist wrote it in plus cylinder. The prescriptions are probably pretty similar. I do have a bias but optometrists study the theory and are trained specifically on refraction where most ophthalmologists study advanced surgery, not refraction. So I would try the prescription from the optometrist first.

That can be a multitude of reasons. Are you based in the USA? Every form of cataract can cause weird prescription, Keratokonus, it’s definitely something to look at and ask more question to narrow down the problem. At least that’s what I do and it works fine.

People often are hungry for minus. Since minus usually boosts the contrast. rule of thumb would be to only correct with more minus: Sphere -> if visus gets better zylinder -> reduces ghosting and or blurriness which is kinda easy with the right usage of a cross cylinder
@Jan96106
@Jan96106 4 месяца назад
Is it possible for a cylinder to go from +1.75, axis 80 to +1.25 axis 70 in a year, and then a year later back to + 1.75, but with an axis at 70, or is it more likely one or both of the last two prescriptions are off? These are not done by professionals but by helpers who don't stay long at the practice. They are either part-time and/or temporary. Some are good. Some are terrible. If my axis is really 80 and off 10 degrees, will this cause vision problems or is my astigmatism low enough that it won't matter? (They did put it years ago at 90, and I was unable to see out of the glasses. I had terrible ghosting.) I will order a cheap pair of glasses online to see, but since my records got screwed up this time too, I'm not sure what axis I'm going to end up with: the 70 one on the prescription or a different one. I'd just like your opinion. I understand you can't give medical advice. Thanks.

I'm an engineer so bear with my geekiness please. I get a prescription and I need additional correction for reading (ADD). But, I don't like the "reading prescription" focal distance being so close because I can't read the dash of my car while driving. If I push the focal point out to about arms length, then I find that the depth of field is so nice and long that I can read a book by holding it just a bit farther away; I can see the dash just fine; and bonus, I things at my feet are in focus. So, what is the formula to push the "reading prescription" focal point out another 12 inches? (I hacked it myself, but would love to check it from an expert).
@SluggishDuck
@SluggishDuck 4 месяца назад
example. If you are over 50 years old your lens which is used for accommodation for near distance will go stiff. Usually if we look at near objects we automatically accommodate to pushour far point to that thing. If you had no lens or it is not working anymore: +3 dpt of ADD. Reciprocal of that means 1/3 which means 0,33m or 33cm since 1/dpt is meter. To push your far point more to distance you need to take your ADD and reduce it. -> 1 dpt: 1/1 which means 1m.

One way to achieve that in your situation would be to correct both of your eyes with contact lenses and wear glasses with 0 power on top of it. Or you could look into Ortho-K lenses. One Problem there would be that you might be out of range for those lenses because your high cylinder on the right. But you could try it. Else it's kinda rough to fix it since glasses who correct high - naturally come with reducing the size of the picture. Same the other way round.

Thank you so much for the convert minus to plus section at the end. I just got a new eye test and the new prescription was using the + instead of -. The numbers were very different and I thought my eyes must have changed a lot, but it turns out it's just written in a different form.

@@DoctorEyeHealth I have a further question regarding this conversion. Let's say my Sph is +1.50, Cyl is -3.50 and Axis 90, after the conversion, it becomes Sph -2.00, Cyl +3.50 and Axis 180. But since the Sph value changed from a positive value to a negative value, wouldn't that make me far-sighted in one form and near-sighted in the other form? But surely I can't be both far-sighted and near-sighted at the same time, so am I far-sighted or near-sighted in this case?

Hey, i’m sorry for everything you’ve been through, God really wants to let you know that He loves you so much. He sent his one and only Son down, Jesus Christ, to die for you and i while we were still living in sin. With Him you can be made new, you are covered with the Precious Blood of Jesus. Following Him is not going to be easy, cutting off sin, changing ways that you live in sin and/or cutting off friends. Not living like the world can be hard in the beginning. But it really is worth it. Please start reading the Bible and pray to receive Him im in a way that is undeniable. Because He will make Himself known to you. i say this to you in love and compassion. Jesus loves you and start to live for Him. It will be the best opportunity of your life.

I was able to obtain 2 free eye exams. One from a private practice and one from the UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic that was at a local library one day. The private practice used all of the modern equipment, while the UCLA team used hand instruments. The private practice doctor was an optometrist and the UCLA doctor was an optomologist. Here are the measurements Private Practice = OD SPh +2.25 Cyl -.75 Ax 103 OS SPh +1.75 Cyl - .50 Ax 053 UCLA = OD Sph +1.75 Cyl DS OS Sph +1.50 Cyl +.50 Ax 155 Both NA +2.25 2019 Costco RX OD Sph +1.25. Cyl -.50 Ax 100 OS Sph +1.00 Cyl -.50 Ax. 044 NA +1.75 PAL ADD +2.00 I have only used readers and now need some help with distance. Before I buy glasses I want to find the correct RX. Not sure if there is a major difference, but would really appreciate your insights. Thanks

Hey thanks for asking! There can be some causes of a faster changing prescription. In a younger individual, I would be concerned about a condition called keratoconus - which is a progressive corneal disease that often causes frequent prescription changes. For people that are middle aged, the change in prescription could be related to early lens changes (the lens inside the eye begins to crystallize and this can change the power of the eye), which is very normal. in addition if someone had been over-minused in their glasses - they may experience this change to a faster degree as the power of the eye changes and the eye muscles cannot compensate as well. The one other major thing I would want to watch out for would be blood sugar changes such as with early uncontrolled diabetes. Higher blood sugars can cause a swelling of the lens inside the eye and can cause a shift in glasses prescriptions. Hope this helps.

Hello Dr Allen; Kudos and thumbs UP for a great tutorial for people who wear glasses to understand what it all means! As a licensed optician, I try to explain to my new wearers exactly what the doctor prescribed and how it's going to help. I wish your videos were available when I was starting my career (some 30+ years ago). It's quite possible I would have chosen optometry. I always enjoy seeing your new videos as well as old ones. I'm always trying to keep myself up-to-date. Thank you! -Mitch, Brooklyn, NY

Yeah, I am still not 100% sure why they use Plus vs Minus, I'm not sure if that's just an old custom that has never died or if its because they are in the mindset of removing tissue rather than applying a new lens in front of the eye. Either way, it all works out in the end.

Thank you so much, I just got bifocals (and/or progressives) at 25 after never having more than maybe reading glasses as a kid 😭 It'd explain my horrible reading ability despite loving it, I have one axis at 10 and another at 75! So no wonder things felt blurred together lol! It's gotten almost constant in the last half a year in a few ways, so I'm excited to have some answers now.

Hi Doc, a quick question, does astigmatism also have near and far sightedness? i.e. objects closeby might look blurry or objects far away might look blurry? Or does having astigmatism mean all objects might be blurry, if yes then why the signs(+,-) My prescription says -2 and -2.5 cylindrical does that mean I'll have to wear glasses 24*7 or only while looking at distant objects?

My prescription has two sets of the numbers. One set is ordered power and the other set is labelled measured power. Is there a difference?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 4 месяца назад
Hmmm. Perhaps that is another way to write Manifest Refraction (measured power) and the Final Refraction (Ordered Power?). In eye care, when someone does a subjective refraction (the better 1 or 2 test), the final result of the subjective component is not always what the doctor will prescribe. Because sometimes the subjective results would cause problems with the eyes, such as double vision, for example. That is a bit of a guess though, I have never heard of anyone writing Ordered Power and Measured Power. Can I ask what country you got the Prescription in? Perhaps its a regional thing.

I would LOVE to be a -5.5! I’m a -13 😐. Even with this eyesight, I’m thankful to God often that my vision can be corrected with contact lenses, but it’s so hard to find eyeglasses that I don’t dislike. I am also in the early stages of a cataract in my right eye. I’ll be trying to fight that with good/better nutrition. I feel certain God will help me with that. I’ve just recently found your channel. Keep up the good work! I’m learning so much. I’ll be praying you’ll be able to endure as long as God wants you to endure. 🙏🙂

I have a question: are blacklights bad for your eyes? I grew up loving blacklight posters and I have a blacklight in my bedroom that I use as somewhat like a nightlight. The bulb is not visible and it is pointed upward to light up my ceiling. It's only on while I'm getting ready for bed as ambient light. But could this be bad for my eyes if it's on a regular basis every night?
