I always felt like she was constantly acting as a character in her own movie. One day she's a transgender youth another she is a intelligent college student, or an artsy quirky girl. And she was a very bad actress at that, throughout her trial I found her to be arrogant and unlikable and self centered, as well as lacking in any sense of self awareness.

I think the motive was rage. She had a sexual encounter with one of Mengel's friends. Mengel found out about it. Ezra didn't want Mengel knowing that she had cheated on him so she fabricated a story that the guy had raped her. She even went so far as to report it to the police and she seemed quite alright with sending the poor guy to prison for many years. Woodworth, the murder victim, had gone to the police and told them that McCandless had told him that the encounter was in fact consensual. The police investigated and did not end up charging the innocent guy with rape. The result of all this was that Mengel knew that she had cheated on him. She was not happy about that. This made her furious with Woodworth.

I've just watched the whole trial. What you say is true and to add more detail, she was in communication with Mengel with both planning on getting back together when she was spotted by woodworths flat mate coming out of his shower in a towel. That message got relayed to Mengel and he was furious (again no doubt). This happened 24 hours before Woodworth was killed and ezra was pressing everyone to tell Mengel it was a lie. She needed Woodworth to tell Mengel he was lying about John Hanson AND that he was coercing her into having a relationship she didn't want to have. She needed him to take responsibility for the shower encounter and admit their ongoing relationship was not actually happening. I imagine, the poor fella didn't comply with her request and she lost the plot. Mengel was a fool to stay in contact with her and in some part is responsible for Woodworths death. Mengel also sent a photo of graffiti on the door of Racys coffee shop where woodworth worked and they all hung out. The photo had her telephone number and the words 'fuq me' over it. She was humiliated, caught out, running out of road and losing the one thing she wanted, which was getting her own way. I think the girl 'gone snapped' and alex woodworth took the full force of the hit. Sad sad story. Rip to his family.

You're 2 years earlier, and far more eloquent, than I am! That's exactly how I saw it, too! She was sleeping with John (the guy she'd claimed had raped her), Jason, *and* Alex! ... and the guys were all friends with one another as well.

I was thinking more or less the same thing: Jodi Arias and Dalia Dippolito ( it took 3 trials before she could be convicted and stay convicted. Then again, Dalia had a little more "time on the table" as they say, in this particular game.) Someone on another video stated that she was just in the habit of using sex to get what she wanted. I don't think it was that cut and dried. I said I thought perhaps McCandless was the Perfect Dark Triad Trifecta, ie. She had all of the dark triad disorders. She needed Narcissistic supply, and for someone who didn't work, and had no money, she viewed herself as the ancient soul born into the world, and tried to give everyone with whom she came in contact a taste of that; that they were viewed as a soul mate. She did this by attempting to be all things (including all genders), at all times to all people. She is like a marketing campaign and the product is Ezra McCandless and she is selling the sizzle, not the steak. After all, she was fine periodically moving out of Jason's house when SHE wanted to; (BPD), she wanted all people to remain in her circle for supply, she wanted the freedom to choose new partners with new experiences, and additional romance and money; or even to stop being a girl occasionally, which must be the penultimate for someone with BPD. I cannot take your calls right now; I am busy being a boy. Once I become a girl again, I will return your call; and due to her Machiavellian traits, she actually maintained a livelihood of just hanging around a coffee shop all day, casting out her line, and when a promising victim came along, she reeled them into her web. She was used to being the one who took breaks to experience new supply, but when she could not get Jason back, I think the Narcissistic injury was so great that the perpetrator that caused her to experience this failure had to pay with his life. Of course, I'm not diagnosing anyone here; only speculating on what could be happening in a situation like this. )

@@whims6278That sticks with me most in this case. I would have loved to have had just five minutes of conversation with Alex. I know I wouldn't be able to keep up, but my favorite thing to do with people is to pick their brains and see what makes them themselves. Alex was extremely open about his worldview, his philosophies, desires, motives, morals, weaknesses, etc. And his worldview that he describes is one of selfless love and endless empathy for those around him. Even hearing about the type of person he was helps visualize the blinding light of pure GOODNESS that he was. A senseless, tragic loss. I hope that his family publishes at least some of his writings because in a world as horrible as this one, much of what he wrote about is a healing balm on the festering infection of greed, anger, and apathy that we are facing today. I pray his family finds peace that he is now an angel watching over them and all those he sought to help in his short but well-lived life.

Same; I was watching her testimony on the dreading YT channel and I just couldn't take it anymore. I don't see how so many people were fooled by her so-called charm. She was hardly charming at all. @motherlessgoat72
@motherlessgoat72 8 месяцев назад
@@amimi92When she started out that she was sorry, I was extremely hopeful that she would finally own up to her actions and take responsibility for her crimes. But then she proceeded to downplay her role in Alex's death. I was disappointed only in the fact that I was hoping to find something redeeming in her personality. Every person is capable of being better by facing the consequences of their actions and apologizing. But she once again ran away from the truth of the matter. I don't think she'll reflect on her actions for the next fifty years she'll definitely be locked up. Not one thought will be spared in sympathy to the family, to Alex, to her friends, to Jason, to John, etc. She believes she's completely in the right.

McCandless played the two (really three) men against each other. To commit the murder, she lured Woodworth to a remote area and stabbed him in the back of the head when he wasn’t looking. After being convicted, her mother set herself up as a distributor of McCandless’ artwork and promoted her daughter as wrongfully convicted. Ezra was glad to go along with the delusion; this, after having uttered a half-baked apology before sentencing. Woodworth and Mengle both ignored many warning signs that McCandless was emotionally unstable. Woodworth wrote many entries in his journal beseeching McCandless to just let him know whether she really wanted to be in a relationship with him. So as a witness in her own trial, she got to kill him again, painting him as a sex-crazed abuser. His family, which knew him to be a gentle soul who could hurt no one, had to sit through the trial listening to her kill the reputation of their slain relative (son, brother, uncle, cousin, etc.).

I think it goes back to her inability to regulate her emotions with regard to her relationship to her guy she wanted. She was convinced that Woodworth was the reason she lost him but unwilling to accept that her own actions were the cause rather than Woodworth’s refusal to lie and incriminate himself for her. As a very young woman, he was her first real love and I think she fixated on him and the sabotaged herself. I don’t know what her plan was when she rolled back into town and she probably didn’t either but she was going to do something to get the man’s attention. I think it was just her rage at not being able to get what she wanted and Woodworth symbolized the reason for that. He symbolized her mistake and her inability to control things.

I watched this trial and Ms. Monica (Ezra) LOVED every minute of it! When Jason walked in to testify against her, she literally blushed like a teenager. I don't think she appreciated the fact that she killed someone, ended their life, and Woodworth's family and loved ones suffered an immense loss because of her actions. She is self indulging and immature, although she portrays herself as this deep thinking progressive person, she is simply a murderer. Just my humble opinion. You always do an amazing job Dr. of telling the facts, giving a professional analysis, and sprinkling in the perfect blend of your unique, deadpan humor in the process. Thank you! I’d love to see Dr. Grande’s take on CHRIS McCandless. He starved to death in 1992 after isolating himself, in the rugged terrain of Alaska - completely unprepared and disillusioned with what it took to survive in that environment. Some say he did it on purpose - that he was suicidal. Some say he was just completely out of touch with reality. His severely underweight body was found by Moose Hunters in an abandoned bus in the middle of the Alaska with a journal detailing his slow, agonizing death.

It seems like her "plan" (for lack of a better term) was in some way intended to manipulate the sympathies of the man she most desired. Although I'm not qualified to diagnose anything, for a long while now I have extraordinary suspensions that my sister has BPD, and I believe that the birth of my nephew (who I eventually adopted) was a plan to more or less trap her boyfriend into staying with her. (Obviously backfired.) I'm not saying that people with BPD are masterminds, just saying that the motivation (desperation) to hold on to people leads them to make poor decisions.

I've become so interested in your extremely well articulated and concise analysis of these cases Dr. Grande! As a mental health worker for many years I am so fascinated by people and their behaviours and there is a fine line sometimes in getting an analysis wrong. It takes a certain high level of interpersonal skill and intellect to read a person's behaviour, that possibly, no amount of academia can achieve. Even with your academic status, you appear to have this incredible ability. I am nowhere near as academically educated as you are yet and you are incredible to listen to partly for this reason - I am learning from you immensely! I am very experienced on an interpersonal level so feel I can relate to your analysis ability and its ridiculously exciting to hear when your ideas align with mine as I follow you through your descriptions and analysis. Throughout this particular case, whilst you touched on it not being mentioned almost as a nod to your own possible prediction, I felt this person was radiating behaviours aligned with BPD and possibly histrionic. One of my biggest intruiges at the moment is how the manifestation of nurodivergent types can blend and impact on the level of personality disorder type - or if they're simply commonly interlinked. Whilst currently doing a challenging social work degree (UK), I myself have recently been diagnosed with dyslexia with an uncommon assessed type due to extremely high IQ verbal comprehension so my reading and writing abilities are very good, if not advanced (when writing properly - please, I hope nobody judges my late night youtube comments for spelling and grammer 😆) and contrary to the typical perception of dyslexia. It's only when analysing the assessment criteria for dyslexia in detail we/I discovered that there are so many aspects to who I am that are affected by my dyslexia that do not show in my reading and writing, like my processing speed with certain things and my memory recall when reading - this area is poor. This all can affect how I socially communicate, prepare speech and socially present. When I consider that all nuero-divergent types are basically on their own spectrum dependent on the nature and nurture of the personality, I wonder; how much does nuerdivergence play a part in the worsening of personality disorders and does it go undetected because they are essentially 'high functioning/high maskers/high IQ in a particular aspect of mental abilities'. I want to waffle endlessly about stuff like this so apologies to anyone I've bored to sleep along the way but truly, for anyone who is fascinated by this stuff, I LOVE reading your views and opinions. Thank you for your fascinating insights Dr. Grande and your followers!

I stumbled upon Ezra McCandless' story and spent the afternoon watching videos about her, and then I saw Dr. Grande's video, so I watched that, too. I watched part of Ezra's testimony in her court trial, and it didn't take long to see the similarity between Ezra McCandless and Jodi Arias. They have the same steady gaze, the same low, precise way of speaking, and a cool detachment toward their trials and testimonies. If you watch them closely, eventually you will see a hint of arrogance, a smirk, the flicker of a secret smile. There are certain types of killers who do that. They are the dangerous ones, the ones who think they are smarter and better than everyone else. Ted Bundy comes to mind, as well as Anders Breivik, Aileen Wuornos, and Richard Ramirez. I don't think they are sorry for what they did, only that they got caught.

Hey I have a suggestion. I'm hoping you would be willing to do a video on Bodybuilders and competitive bodybuilding. Im a Bodybuilder and personal trainer and I can tell you that the personality profiles and reasons behind why people do this is very interesting. I think it would make a very good video. There is also a few cases you could review. A guy names Craig Titus and his wife Kelly Ryan killed their assistant and went to prison for it. Also more recent and also more popular a Guy named Rich piana died. He was a huge figure in the bodybuilding world and was definitely a very interesting person.

I think that is a great idea. I dated a body builder briefly, but he had crazy mood swings. I later assumed it was the roids.

I go to a bodybuilding gym but I work on 'muscles to go not muscles for show'. I see these guys and have had a few conversations and reckon there is enough material for a psychologists' convention. Having said that I train for boxing and that world is up there with regard to peculiarities too.

I enjoyed this insightful analysis, Dr. G. Very thorough. I really appreciate the juxtaposition of McCandless’ behavior with Arias and Hubers.
