My great grandpa was the pilot at the end of this video! My Great Aunt and uncle came across this video and seen and recognized Harold! How wonderful to find a piece of history with your family in it!

The last part of this film, showing the PT-21's and PT-22's as well as the Stearman's was shot at Hemet Ryan Field, home of the Ryan School of Aviation during WWII. T. Claude Ryan contracted his school to the USAAF for primary training. My dad graduated from this school in mid 1942 (Chuck Yeager graduated from there in '43.) His stories and photos agree with what is seen in this video. Of course the Ryan school was all about Ryan's airplanes, but though the students were started in the PT-21/22, before solo time they were switched to the Stearman, then afterward they were switched back to the Ryan's. I guess the AAF wanted the guys to get some experience with a big blind airplane with more difficult ground handling. The Ryan's were more delicate, but were a hotter ship, with certain potentially vicious characteristics in the air. The fractional aerial view of the base, as well as the view of the hilly background can be confirmed from Google Earth. Go the ground level view and you can easily identify the hills. Dad's photos of the barracks or housing in which he and his fellows stayed match the design - porches and white-cross railings shown in that one view of the admin building in the video.
