The F-14 Tomcat was retired from service with the United States Navy in 2006. After retirement, most of the F-14s were scrapped at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. A small number of F-14s were preserved in museums and private collections.
The Iranian Air Force is the only remaining operator of the F-14 Tomcat. Iran purchased 79 F-14s from the United States in the 1970s, and it has kept them in service ever since.
The F-14 was a groundbreaking aircraft for its time. It was the first fighter jet to be equipped with a variable-sweep wing, which allowed it to fly at both high and low speeds. The F-14 was also the first fighter jet to be equipped with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile, which was a long-range air-to-air missile.
The F-14 played a key role in the Gulf War, where it shot down over 40 Iraqi aircraft. The F-14 is a legendary fighter jet, and it will continue to be remembered for its advanced design and its impressive combat record.

Sorry the F-111 is the first production airplane with a variable sweep wing-a wing configuration that can be changed in flight.

@@AirportAviation380 well aware of what the F stands for I’m former military just because they labeled it F doesn’t make it a fighter in this case this plane didn’t live up to what they said n cost 5x more then quoted it wasn’t a fighter that’s why the Navy n Air Force eventually dropped it and they never used it for a fighter

i was surprised to see that recent aerial photo of the graveyard and to see tomcats still there . the tomcat is the only twin tail swing wing we had so it was the f14 and they had about a dozen there , and the gov said they were all destroyed to keep Iran from getting them , with that number they're probably most of the D models as they only made a few and those were the most modern of the f14

The first American aircarft with variable swept wings was the F111 with a first flight 6 years before the f14 but the first fighter with variable swept wings was the Soviet mig 23 almost 4 years before the f14

Scrapped. The only real reason it has a variable swept wing was to copy the Soviets who produced the first such aircraft. It turned out to be a bad engineering decision copying them because those wings required too much maintenance to keep them flying. Eventually it was realized with better fixed wing design that you could have a less expensive plane like the F-18 that you could still get the speed you needed not only for fast flight but for also landing on a carrier.

Its still worthy airplane to fly just because a newer model comes along people give up on the F14 to the F15 so it goes on . The F111 is also a worthy bomber to still keep flying.

Not quite. They have different roles. They don't progressively replace each other. The F14 was a naval fighter plane. It wasn't replaced by an F15, it was initially replaced with an F18 variant.

The f14 and the f111 were both far to expensive to operate hence why they were replaced and modern f18s have better weapons and better sensors for a lower purchase and operation cost
