If anyone is curious, the hand signals the SU-57 pilot was using were actual signals. He first said, "follow me" then he said "330". "Follow me, heading 330" asking Mav to follow him north back to the base he came from, away from the ship which was south of their position. So, they really did think he was a friendly before Maverick started shooting.
@@Tigerman1138 My guess is the following *[Follow me, heading 330]* Maverick throws up a bunch of hand signals which tip off the SU-57 pilot that whoever's in it is not on their side, hence the other pilot moving into position for a killshot.

You cannot sneak yp on any modern fighter, get a missile lock and obliterate it without the pilot getting all sorts of warnings. @xXSynAckXx yeah the first hand signal the SU-57 pilot gave was telling Maverick to take the lead. The second hand signal the pilot gave was telling Maverick to take a heading of 330 degrees, probably a heading for the SU-57's home base.

He told Rooster to pull the ejection handle. Usually it's the pilot (not RIO) who would pull the handle and ejection sequence would be pilot first, RIO second. If RIO pulls the handle he would be ejected first but pilot himself would have to pull his own handle to eject, otherwise he would stay with the aircraft. There are some movies, perhaps a majority of them, that are acceptable to be seen for the first time at home. This is not one of them. I've seen it twice in IMAC at $15 a pop. Worth every penny.
There can be many reasons to why not and even I’m not 100% sure but I’m going to say it has to do with the loss of money. Movies make more money in theatres than they do online for the most part; the only movie I can really think of that made an significant amount of money on online was The Interview with James Franco and Seth Rogan. This movie got so much press and so many studios were afraid to release it in theatres, the situation promoted itself. There was a big audience, and a big ‘why was this movie banned from theatres’ that when it was release online, people went and saw it. Another factor is piracy. Once a movie is online, it can easily be seen for free on other websites for free. Every show and movie that is on Netflix is on another streaming site where you can watch the movie/series for free, so it goes back to movies make most of their money from theatres. Also streaming service sites don’t pay enough for the movie in regards to the movies budget including marketing and advertising. There’s an movie that cost 140 million for production, and then 50 million more for marketing and advertising. That’s 200 million dollars, and online streaming sites if anything usually gets a main stream movie 2-5 million. Netflix doesn’t even spend that much on their original movies because they know they’re not going to make a lot money back from it. Same goes for Hulu, and Crackle. Crackle, Xbox Live, and PS Online, and a few other streaming sites also take about 50% in revenue made from the movie. So if the movie made 100,000$, the studios would only get 50,000 back from that streaming site. With the amount of money used to make a lot of main stream Hollywood movies, it would be more of a loss for them to have it both online. I assume they would make less in revenue. Now independent movies made on smaller budgets could make revenue, but I think Hollywood movies would struggle financially. Don’t get me wrong, they’ll make money but not nearly as much.
He made the right decision to push back against those who wanted to release it earlier. We can also thank Godzilla vs Kong for bringing us back to the movies.
Adding Val Kilmer with the state he’s in added so much authenticity. Maverick once cocky has matured into a wiser Maverick. Managing to bring back the F14 into the plot was genius. The continuity of Maverick from Top Gun aged like fine wine.
@@nadrewod999 The F-14 was made for digfights, while 5th gen fighters are made to shoot stuff from as far as possible. If a F-14 pilot could somehow use a distraction or dodge the first missiles enough to close the distance, It's a 4-6 chance of success. If you consider that the vast majority of active fighter pilots on the world don't have real battle experience things can get quite interesting. But honestly, in a situation like Ukraine pilots should be more worried about anti-air defenses on the ground than encountering other pilots, I'm sure the number of casualities caused by land-to-air missiles are far bigger than air-to-air combat.
That and the Russians, Iranians, Chinese and Indians still use F-14s. we traded a bunch of F-14s to Russia to get all their surplus MIG 25s and MIG 29s (making us the airforce with the most MIGs outside of Russia) just to keep advanced 4th gens out of the hands of the Iranians.

@@angelic_disappointment7889 are you just dumb or what? do you even know what a plane captain is? I served in the US Navy onboard CVN-77 and almost all of our plane captains were young as hell and typically the plane captains are the youngest in any given squadron. They are basically the Navy's version of ramp agents at a commercial airport. They do all the service checks, maintenance checks, flight pre inspections, and final checks before a flight.

That's heartbreaking brother. My dad passed in 2014, prior Air Force. Watching these clips I still glance over at his picture on the wall and look for his approval as we always use to do during military movies like these.
If anyone is curious why the ejection handles wouldn’t work, it’s bc prior to take off Rooster was unaware to pull the ejection seat safety pins, it shows him pull the pins for the missiles but not the ones for ejection
That's understood. I was curious has to how many pins for the ejection seats there are. My question is what if Rooster had pulled one pin but not the rest.
Very consistent, that. Maverick himself had noted that the "backseat" concerns were often Goose's concern. Ever since the first time I saw that sequence, it's been in my mind that the F-14 was the base commander's "personal" ride.
My best recollection from 40+ years ago is (7) seat pins. Usually the pins are on a connected lanyard but I didn’t see any “remove before flight” flags.
Maverick: "I'm about to send a missile up your tail-pipe!" Enemy pilot: "I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar!" Rooster: "What the HELL was that?!?" A hero is only as strong as the challenges he (or she) overcomes. By making the enemy pilots not only competent, but actually good, Maverick and Rooster are made to look better, not lesser. I wish the modern Marvel films would remember that lesson.
The fact that 3 pilots could not shoot him down, but started playing some kind of catch-up and not getting into almost point-blank range looks unrealistic and fake
@@MATERYK The first pilot was caught by surprise, and had no time to respond. The second was hampered by the terrain. And the third absolutely would have blown them out of the sky, if Hangman hadn't shown up literally at the last second!

The writers and producers made it so PC and non specific to not piss off any potential audience. They also didnt have the nerve to kill any of the group. At least the first Top Gun had some balls.
One detail i like about this scene, and the whole sequence, is that it shows the importance of doing your checklist correctly. For starters, you're supposed to arm your ejection seat before starting the plane (you can do so afterwards, but it's harder to do as the canopy will usually be down). Thus why they couldn't eject: the seats weren't even armed. Also, if they had used their flaps on take off, they'd have lifted off with room to spare and not lost part of their nose gear. And the best part... It's all excusable in universe. Mav hadn't been in a Tomcat in decades, and Rooster had never been in one. Plus, the fact that they were crunched for time, and couldn't exactly google the F14 NATOPS

2:35 in case anyone was wondering what that maneuver was by the SU-57, it’s called the kvochur bell and was invented by a Russian test pilot. realistically that maneuver would only help the missile hit him but it is a good maneuver for slowing down and being able to fire at your enemy’s from those directions when it spins (possible but very unlikely).
That only wouldve worked on missiles that lacked a proximity fuse, and a missile without one is practically rare nowadays, there is a reason why those manuevers are only seen in airshows But still, its a pretty badass move for the movie, so Ill let it slide
I’d say it’s only usable in an extremely close in dogfight where you want to make the enemy overshoot. At least that’s what I do with the Flanker in DCS.
@@harbour2118 well of course if you are doing it incorrectly and not nose countering and just flying badly overall. When you are super close in and the enemy is within eye contact distance a cobra can save your ass in a pinch assuming they aren’t nose on to you already
This scene was absolutely amazing to see in theatres, the sheer violence of the jet engines was practically palpable and the fact the Su-57 pulled a PSM just solidified the film's place as perhaps the best of the year. But what amazes me even more is that the director has only made, like, five films yet each and every one of them has been absolute bangers, one of which is even based on a graphic novel _he_ had written. He even directed the Halo 3 Starry Night trailer, one of the best video game trailers of all time. It ends up being no wonder Top Gun Maverick wound up as it did.
Everything just clicked in the right places for Top Gun Maverick. It was worth the delays and then some. Hands down the best belated sequel I've seen in many years.
My favorite thing is the backstory behind Mavericks moves. "Splitting the throttles" effectively means "killing the thrust in one engine while going "max thrust" on the other. Due to the wide spacing of the engines, this effectively allows you to "throw" the ass end of the plane around, quickly getting your nose angled at a faster rate than normally possible. Even more interestingly, there were 2 versions of the Tomcat. First version had "compressor stall" issues, this means that you could lose an engine, causing the same effect as "splitting the throttles" but since it wasnt planned by the pilot, you would end up in a flat spin and unrecoverable. 2nd version of the Tomcat upgraded some components, limiting the issue from happening, but not totally eliminating it. Finally, remember how goose died? Single engine loss from flying through another aircrafts turbulence/exhaust causing the compressor failure issue. As Maverick wasnt prepared for that, it ended in the flat spin from the first movie and Gooses death. How much you wanna bet that Maverick studied THE HELL out of that problem, to the point that when the upgraded tomcats came out, he was one of the few who could actually recreate the issue, and use it to his advantage. It was actually considered a possible aircraft maneuver but wasnt actively used because the compressor could still potentially stall, killing the engine. It took a very specific amount of control and finesse to pull off without unintentionally killing the powered down engine. Using the very thing that killed Roosters father to help save his son because rather than admit defeat, he studied the issue that caused Gooses death and made it part of his skillset.
Most unrealistic part of this film is that both Maverick and Rooster don't understand the basic hand signals the Iranian pilots give. What he's saying is "Heading, 3-3-0. Return to base."
What makes this scene so great for me is you can literally see Maverick's actions of giving all of his piloting skills to out-perform new age tech and piloting. This makes to scene so believable as he doesn't make it look easy in hero style. Shows his struggle and growth as a character.
You could see he was using literally every ounce of intelligence, flight skill and he was pushing the f14 to the limits. Splitting the throttle and turning over on the felon was an incredible move. Using the cobra as he did, and tricking the missile into hitting the other felon is just all insane

Well, the Pilots flying the Vipers had 3,000-4,000 hours in it? At which time the Pilots knew their aircraft inside out, far more than the F-35 pilots did know theirs. I love how they depict the SU-57 fighter jets, and their pilots Advanced. Sleek. Deadly. Versatile. Like sharks streaming through the air, posed to make a kill. I seem to remember there were several of us...all with maroon jackets, black ties, white ruffled shirts... and as we all stood there like privates in line, he began to go down the line and pin something on each of our jackets while whispering into the ears of who he was currently "anointing." What was he pinning on their jackets? What was the secret message my manager was softly speaking into the ears of fellow ushers? @ElCadir Small I'm glad someone asked that. Besides SU57 being super maneuverable... What I really liked about this movie is that Maverick's exploits are based on things that really happened. During WWII ,three different pilots stole German fighters and flew them home after being shot down. One of the first instructors at Top Gun got into a dogfight by himself and beat three Zero's ....which is even more impressive when you find out he was flying a dive bomber. Chuck Yeager stole a test plane after the program was cancelled and used it to set new speed and altitude records before having to eject , the rescue crew found him walking along the road in his still smoldering flight suit. The mission in the movie is a copy of one Israeli pilots flew to take out Saddam's nuclear power plant.
This film was meant for the theater. Everything felt so real as you were in the jets itself with being in the cockpit as Tom Cruise didn't want CGI rather than real stunts. Also, nothing would ever come close to realism than this would ever come. Seeing this in theaters is a story to tell. It was beautifully shot where we wouldn't have an experience like this again. But if Maverick was real, he would had seen this move which is a derivative of the Cobra maneuver: cobra barrel roll. And the first cobra maneuver was demoed by a Soviet pilot at an air show in 1989

For real! I just saw the movie 2 days ago, it was utterly riveting. And Jennifer Connoly aged quite gracefully. Props to whoever decided to finally let actors look like normal random people. Wrinkles and all. I feel the new guys movie totally surpassed the OG. 100% better, such a surprisingly good watch. I bought it on bluray to show my dad later on Sunday evening. No one really buys physical media these days but damn the new Top Gun, chefs kiss baby, boy that was hot sexy beautiful cinema all the way through.
.the movie was so good...... intense and emotional....... but could anybody explain......? how mav and rooster were communicating with hangman from 1 plane to another........ just after hangman ruined down the opponent's aircraft........? i mean mav and rooster were flying enemy's toy...... so how the F*** the 2 planes of 2 different natures were in conversation with each other.....? and if that is possible.... then why in the 1st place...... the 2 enemies aircrafts were talking with hand gestures instead of radio when they thought mav and rooster were on their side......?
This movie was so much better than the first one, like 100 times, this Tom Cruise is such a level headed cool guy, with a certain paternal vibe, he felt like a dad,not that cocky kid from 86,
@@MyWalkAround It has character in its fuselage, much like the F-16 (second fav) that many other fighters just do not have. Best looking fifth gen plane, in my opinion is the SU-57, looks HUGE tho.
@@dannyr2976Not really, most modern planes like the F-22 and F-35 are pretty big compared to their 3rd and 4th Gen counterparts. They carry more powerful engines, more munitions, fuel, and carry much more advanced technology to make them that big. The F-14 was big when it first took flight, but now it seems small.
It is a slick looking aircraft for sure. I recommend you look at a youtuber called Ward Carroll who was an F14 jock; really good channel about aviation when he was flying and now, particularly with new techs from potential (hot) enemies
The Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga part is when Maverick has to dodge the final enemy fighter for a few minutes without any weapons, like in those games where you have to dodge the final boss without weapons.
@@matthewklim2387 That’s a Russian aircraft specialty, SU 35, SU 37, SU 30 series, SU 57. All thanks to a high thrust ratio and thrust vectoring nozzles
The split throttle maneuver was legit!! Especially with the spacing between the F-14’s engines, splitting the throttle would turn that acft on a dime! In the aviation realm I work in, we call that throttle chop… Strictly forbidden, but man what a cool maneuver!
The reason that move isn’t done in real scenarios is because of the amount of technical problems it would cause. Aircraft really isn’t meant to be flown like that, you would most likely hit the ground.
@@pctshooter we actually do what are called “accel decel” checks. This is to ensure that the engine accelerates and decelerates without any stalls, popping or flameout.
Now THIS is how you show a movie clip! No chopping or cutting! It only takes 5 minutes of any major scene of this movie to pull you in! I wanna go watch it all over again now!
I love their reaction to the Kvochur Bell maneuver,…very genuine. I don’t know if I would be able to keep my wits with me if I was in a dog fight and actually saw a pilot pull that stunt on me. I might crash out of sheer awe 🤣
Original Top Gun in theater: watched by father and grandfather in Massachusetts TP Maverick: watched by father and son in Indiana, simultaneously grandfather and aunt in Arizona
In fact both Pilots ejected, so that's a plus. I wonder if we might get to see some sort of Spin off where we get to see the action from the bad guys' perspective in the future
@@rifroll1117 no that's a respectable lost remember this even our jets from the 70s and 80s are beyond what even the latest greatest in capability jets our rivals have. Yes the newer ones can be more agile. American jets are just top tier compared to their enemies and rivals
It's hardly talked about because it's so subtle, but Hangman's character arc was a nice touch...and Glen Powell played the part to absolute perfection.

@@HaiderAliKhan All planes, with radios, have the ability to transmit/receive on a pair of international emergency frequencies called "Guard". VHF Guard is 121.5 MHz and UHF Guard is 243 MHz. The two intercepting aircraft Maverick and Rooster could hear but not understand due to the language barrier so they "played deaf and dumb" (The ear tap and thumbs down is the US Navy's gesture for malfunctioning radio) to attempt to escape. That's why the Carrier could hear them later and how Hangman was able to talk to them after his kill.
2:30 I really like this moment, because while we have been looking at the “best of the best” the us has to offer, at the same time these guys clearly have skills they have never seen
"Come on Mav. Don't think, just do..." At first I thought that was Goose saying it. Damn this movie wasn't action, it was a holy pilgrimage for me and it became an emotional rollercoaster ride I just kept crying at scenes where Mav and Rooster would be together. Top Gun 1 is my favorite Tom Cruise movie and one of my favorite military movies. My late Dad's an aircraft mechanic and helicopter pilot and he adores this Top Gun like a religion.
Yes, I do not argue the film is not bad, but it's just a movie, but in reality everything is much worse. American planes deep in the ass. And this is the harsh, merciless truth.😅
@@sadamant8616 you're just pissed your beloved Su-57 was destroyed by an old school F-14 in a FICTIONAL MOVIE. All the while your asses are getting handed to you by Ukrainians in your so called "special military operation?" Enlighten me o wise Ruskie one how's your military going?
My dad was an RF-4 Phantom electrician / mechanic for 27yrs and this was the first movie he ever took me too --- even though he was Air Force he absolutely loved this movie!!!!
Movies always get aircraft wrong, and in trying to look cool, they make things look silly and cartoonish, but this movie did a pretty good job at making it look cool and giving a spectacle without making the audience go "oh well, I guess the aircraft can do anything."
To me, it felt like this sequence was what everything in the first and a second movie built up to ultimately. Hands down the best scenes. Out of all aviation movies and sequences in them, this one right here is the greatest of all time. It's going to be hard to top this one which I don't think can be done. Maybe one day in the distant future. Once he committed to the dog fight with the SU-57s, it instantly gave me a rush of many emotions at once and the most badass moment in both the Top Gun movies. 2nd favorite is when he said something of the effect of splitting the throttle to "do some of that pilot shit". 3rd up is the "brace yourself" moment. Epic.
@@ruthlessuniverse9359 barely anybody cares about which country is being portrayed, it’s about the characters and the cool jets. Not everything is meant to have a deeper meaning, so quit sticking your nose in subject matters you don’t care about.
@@ruthlessuniverse9359 You are correct. The neo Marxist agenda that has been pushed upon our country with this woke movement or whatever the hell people want to call it has made it to where a movie like this is almost a representation of the antithesis movement. But you are 100% correct.

Imagine if they created a Top Gun Video game where you could be a Maverick, a Goose, or a Rooster and they played Great Balls of Fire when you destroyed Evil Enemies.
They have apparently 10 in service, 5 of which have been confirmed by satellite to have been deployed to Ukraine, although they don't enter Ukrainian airspace, just lob missiles from inside Russia. They would have 11, but one crashed late 2019 So not quite.
Best part is the F14 is totally capable of this. But it'd be like trying to do donuts on black ice going 200 miles an hour in a Ferrari and then straighten out and keep driving like nothing happened.. Just shows how good Mav is.
I've seen this movie 5 times in the cinema. Loved every minutes of it. Glad they waited to show it in the theatre...This is one of the many great action scenes..😗😎🤗
I think one of the best parts is that they show the other pilot ejecting. They don’t attempt to dehumanize them, and realize that they’re doing their job like the rest
Like he said: "its not the plane, its the pilot". If one day there's no need for pilots anymore when fighter jets are fully operated by AI, who's gonna maintain them if that job weren't for real people?
