Follow me on IG: weirdbearda... . In this video we'll finish tearing down the 302 cu. in. V8 engine that was removed from a 1991 Ford F-150 Truck. . I'll try my luck at honing the cylinders and cleaning up the engine block as well. I'm also going to tear into the Saturn Aura transmission and see if the wave plates are broken. It doesn't have reverse and I'm not sure why yet. . Thanks for watching. If you like the video please consider hitting the subscribe button to help the channel grow. . Having Weird Beard explain how to disassemble an engine is kinda like listening to your Granddad reading you a bedtime story back in the day. 🤣

Ah, yes, the 3-5-R Wave Plate. Back 10 years ago, it was only $6.18 for just the Wave Plate, not the Sonnax Repair Kit. I had an '09 Saturn Outlook XR which we bought as a GM Exec vehicle w/19k miles, loaded out with every option. Great vehicle, except I knew the transmission was a ticking time bomb with the Wave Plate issue. Before the powertrain warranty expired, the transmission case developed a fluid leak, which required the dealership to drop the cradle, remove the transmission, and separate the cases to address the leak. Having a good relationship with the GM SA, she agreed they would replace the 3-5-R Wave Plate with a new one "while they were in there" fixing the case leak. even though the Wave Plate had not shattered (yet). Iirc, I paid for the Wave Plate and 1/2 hr worth of labor to R&R the part. The 3-5-R Wave Plate shatters because the supplier skipped the important step of heat treating the Wave Plate. Therefore, the thermal cycling of the transmission temp from normal driving eventually causes the material to fail from fatigue. Typically, the Wave Plates would start breaking soon after the Powertrain Warranty expired (5-yr/100k miles), so the customer would be SOL, while a few "got lucky" and had the failure within the warranty period. The reason this failure is so expensive? When the Wave Plate fails, it can dump metal debris through-out the transmission hydraulic fluid circuit, so worse case, the entire transmission needs to be removed and torn-down to get out all that metal debris. It's really a shame that GM screwed-up the 3.6L DOHC/6-spd powertrain, 1st with 10k OLMs, which killed the Cam Chains, and then 2nd with the 3-5-R Wave Plate, which killed the transmissions.

I was a tech in a Saturn dealership back when the Outlooks, Auras and Vues with the 3.6 powertrain came out. We did TONS of these transmissions and more often than not they actually were within the warranty period still. Most were in the Outlooks though as they are the heaviest of the bunch. Most of them that we saw deposited metal debris throughout the entire transmission and often damaged non-wear parts or even the case. The ones that were repaired would always come back a few months later with the wave plate broken again, so we just started replacing the entire transmission. GM didn't even have a service bulletin regarding approved repairs yet so they were happy to take in entire failed transmissions so they could investigate the issue.... and we sent them lots. I remember I got the very first Outlook that came in with a transmission issue to our dealership. It was not a known issue yet. The vehicle owner got the transmission so hot trying to drive the thing in that the 3 5 R clutch pack actually welded itself together, which pretty well turned the entire guts of the transmission into shrapnel. It was the worst smelling transmission I've ever come across. I've also never seen so many broken pieces fall out of a transmission either before or since then. I still have a few pieces of it in my toolbox in my "yes, this actually happened" collection. Every techs jaw hit the floor when they saw what happened inside that transmission. Little did any of us know that we were all about to get VERY familiar with these transmissions in the coming months. They actually had another lesser known issue prior to the now notorious timing chain problems. There was a bad batch of cylinder heads that were cast with a softer aluminum that they were supposed to have, most of the first 2 model years had to have both cylinder heads replaced as a result. The softer metal caused the camshafts the wear away at cylinder head and eventually the lateral run out would cause cam position sensor codes, usually it would happen on bank 2 before it happened on bank 1 but they often came in with codes corresponding to both. It was an engine out job on the Outlooks and Vues (which were most affected by the issue) and it could be done with the engine in on the Auras. We didn't see a whole lot of Auras with the issue though. Mostly Outlooks, some Vues. I dropped so many subframes out of those Outlooks I could almost literally do it with my eyes closed. Most of them came to me because I could turn them around a lot quicker that anybody else in the shop. It wasn't unusual for me to drop the subframe out of an Outlook for either a transmission replacement or a cylinder head replacement 4 or 5 times a week. I could often start one first thing in the morning and have it done (if I wasn't interrupted) and back on the road by 2 or 3 the same day. I actually made a lot of money off of those Outlooks, was one of very few warranty jobs I didn't mind doing. I probably did 500 of them by the time they shut down the Saturn brand.

Is there anything that this excellent old school mechanic cannot do? I doubt there is anything he cannot do. You would have made an excellent teacher WB. Much respect and thanks for all your great videos
@whistlingdiesel
@whistlingdiesel 2 года назад
Maybe the fact that you do not have a tripod is one advantage of your filming, you change the camera position more often and it makes it more lively and less static. I loved the filming from inside the block. And if you are already even with the Saturn than buy a brand-new transmission and ask for 5000$, or become a transmission guy and savior for all of the cars from this generation. 😁😁

Excellent video Mike.... I have never been mechanically inclined but watching your videos has taught me things I never knew regarding vehicles and what makes them run. Your talents are incredible and really admire you and what you do. I am hooked on your videos and enjoy learning from a great teacher. Good luck getting the Saturn fixed and back on the road......I have no doubt you will do it.

Damned old waves plates. Bought a 2008 Acadia at auction for $1900. Needed wave plates. Quoted $4000 for a new trans. I passed. Actually sold it to a guy that was going to fix it himself or exactly what I paid for it so I saved my ass. But I’m so glad you did this video so for future reference! Great video! Using gasoline to clean parts reminds me of back in the day. Helped my neighbor rebuild his combine engine while it was still on the combine years ago and we needed something to clean parts with. He had an old oil well close to his barn so he went out and got some drip gas from it and it worked great. Good times!

We used gasoline to clean parts back in the day when we didn't know better but I would never do that or recommend it now, the danger of fire plus the health risks of breathing gas fumes and skin exposure is just not worth it.
