Navy F-16 Familiarization flight. This was a flight at VF-126 to "warm up" for ACM (air combat maneuvers). Includes a Mach 2 run of over 1,200 mph.
Recently was interviewed for a podcast at peopleofamericapod.com. Episode 8. I reference this video a couple time.

WOW thank you for posting, just an old 72 X Army, guy I flew a recon plane back in the day 1968, my friend Warrant officer took me up let me fly the plane for about 4 minutes, lol. My son is USAF S/msgt. Now . This is amazing. Thank you.

Funny how the screen is black @2:25 for the SMS ( stores management system ) page on the MFD..... but you can play Falcon4 or DCS and all this information is available and much much more. Great sims they are! @8:49 you have your FCR (Fire Control Radar) set to Ground Mode (GM) and Snow Plow (SP) with 80 mile range set.

It's funny watching this because I see f-16s fly over top ALL the time here in Southern Ohio. They're mostly always doing BFM but, I always wondered what a pilot thinks or does when he's just flying around like that. Does a pilot try to do little cool things for people on the ground or waters? The Vipers I see get very low as well basically buzzing through the hills.

Niloc, glad you enjoyed the video. Flights are always based on training. In this case it was a "warm up" for BFM to reacclimate to pulling G's, inverted flight, etc. Basically just go out and bend the plane around so I had the flexibility to do as I wanted. If the Vipers around you are low they could be on a low level route designed for bombing runs. Military Training Routes (MTRs) are shown on Sectional and TAC charts. You could look them up for your area online.

why does the hud altimeter use commas instead of decimals? At the beginning his altitude is ~00,5 which I'm guessing is 500ft barometric? I thought it was standard to just list the altitude as whatever it is /1000, but that would be 0.5 not 00,5

Hey, Really interesting video. Is there any chance you can remember what the loadout of this aircraft was during the flight? My presumption would be clean with no pylons because of how quickly it got to M2 but perhaps you can remember? Also is there any chance you can remember the empty weight of the F-16N, there are drastically varying numbers on that all over the internet and its not often you can ask somebody who actually flew them!

Hi Ben, you are correct. This was an adversary aircraft and we didn't even have drop tanks. The gun was removed from the nose and we had an older and lighter radar. Probably the best performing F-16 ever made! I can't remember the empty weight but I'll check with a squadron mate and see if he remembers. If so, I'll reply back. - Frank

I guess the Navy considers "Calibrated Airspeed" differently than we do in General Aviation. Without going to the AIM to double check, my recollection is that "Calibrated airspeed" is indicated airspeed corrected for instrument error and pitot tube minor installation errors. The two airspeeds are very close in GA terms because the error is not that significant in GA. Above there is a big difference between "Calibrated airspeed" and "true airspeed". In the F-16 the term "calibrated" is in reference to "mach" speed? That's not even possible in a Cessna piston-powered airplane. Here, the Aviator considers "Calibrated" airspeed to be in reference to Mach airspeed. Are the two references in the Navy and GA different? I would assume that training Naval Aviators would have to know about instrument errors in the airspeed indicator and pitot-static system. Anybody know why there is a difference in the usage of the term "calibrated"?

My question is why do pilots of the F-16 use as a default the "Calibrated" airspeed on the HUD? Second, why do they call it "calibrated" in reference to Mach speed? Ever since before WWII, the CAA (later the FAA) defined the term "Calibrated airspeed" as a correction to be applied to the "indicated airspeed". The "calibrated" airspeed is unique for each aircraft because when the pitot-static system is designed for any particular model of airplane, there are always slight differences in indicated airspeed due to the placement of the pitot tube and static port. The calibrated airspeed for every particular airplane can be found as a graph that accompanies the airplane when build and sold by the manufacturer. More importantly, there was a reference by Bob Hoover somewhere where Hoover had a bet with another pilot that if they used two identical airplanes, the top speeds should be the same (side note, I may have the term of the bet confused or backward but the idea and result is the important point). After Hoover and the other pilot raced, the speeds were different. Hoover knew there was a mechanical reason for the difference because the planes were identical but the pitot tubes were placed in different places. For those who don't know what a pitot tube is, essentially it is the port where the air flowing at the wing is measured for airspeed information to be sent to some of the aircraft's instruments. Hoover eventually determined that the most accurate place to place the pitot tube is approximately 1/3 back from the leading edge of the wing. Once this was changed, both planes flew at exactly the same top speed at full throttle. I hope I got the details correct.

Modern avionics are accurate enough to have negligible error between Ias and Cas. In the P8 our IAS is CAS. Ie what we see on the airspeed tape is CAS.

Most of the flight was in W291. A military warning area (MOA) off the coast of southern California. The island is St Clemente.

13:20 Since when shows the F16 Miles per hour instead of Knots? Would have been already 1000MPH at MACH 1.52 Weird, if this is really an F16 Pilot.

+Bee Aye, "Meatball" is slang for the Fresnel Lens which sits on the port (Left) side of the aircraft carrier. We use it to establish a glideslope to land on the carrier. Obviously not in an F-16. I flew F-14 previously. BTW, I did call it a "tadpole" on the takeoff.

Tadpole is the "great circle steering cue", the circle with the tail. Some people call the flight path marker (FPM), circle with 3 tick marks representing a mini-airplane the meatball as nicknname. The tadpole happens to always be at the same distance above/below horizon as the FPM by construction so either are equally valid to reference for flight path angle.
