Why do I hear Drift music? 🤔🤔
This time, we're talking about the Tactical Pitch, AKA: The Dojo Drift.
A crowd favorite, this finale maneuver seemed like a fitting way to finish out our Maneuvers Explained series.

that is a great looking slide! And yes, impressive after dumping all that energy, how well the F35 goes into a climb. Just wonderful to watch!

Great demo Capt. Wolf at the NY air show this year in Orange county, loved how the F-22 and F-35 did two dojo drifts one after the other. Was a spectacular show and full of excitement.

Love this move. Was really hard in our CF18s to pull this off, the F35 seems to have no thrust to weight issues with it.

43,000k thrust that's why plus at end of show when aircraft weight is down.

I think viewers would prefer more third person views to see to fully grasp the move, which isn't too obvious in cockpit view

Would that maneuver be used in a combat situation?
@tsilb

Well, just imagine you're being chased by an enemy who isn't as maneuverable as you are, or whose acceleration isn't as fast so it can't recover from losing speed like you can.

@@tsilb even an enemy that can pull a Cobrachev? I've heard stories that the F-35 can out turn an F-16 nowadays, but those ruskies are still a head ache.

Bleeding off that much energy is often not a good idea during a dog fight (not that it happens much now a days). If you overshoot a plane, it is pretty much your fault for being that close to the defending aircraft in the first place. Same with the cobra. You can probably pull off one missile shot but 9/10 times an opponent that knows what he is doing will shoot you down. It is a hail mary manoeuvre.
@CRAZYHORSE19682003
@CRAZYHORSE19682003 3 года назад
Extreme maneuverability is the most overrated thing in a fighter today. Almost all advanced air to air missiles are all aspect, meaning you do not have to be behind the enemy to shoot them. Almost all advanced air to air missiles have a high off bore site lock on capability meaning you can fire a missile and an aircraft 90 degrees off your shoulder. Almost all advanced air to air missiles have a lock on after launch capability meaning you do not have to have a missile lock to fire on a target, you fire the missile and it will lock onto the target after launch. So the F-35 can fire a missile at a target that is directly behind it. The F-35 will see enemies long before it is detected. It will use networked sensors to assign targets by priority of threat and deal with them before the enemy aircraft even knows an F-35 is in the area. If they are out of missiles they will simply avoid the enemy aircraft without ever being detected.

First explain why you would need to do it, how a threat aircraft got WVR. It's a nice to have capability insurance policy after layers of lethal options. Nobody is sneaking up on F-35s.

So useless plane, cant even fly in rain and thunder.
@LRRPFco52

We see who isn't a pilot with that comment. Have you ever flown through a thunderstorm before? It can take a huge airliner and throw it around like a leaf in a dust devil. NOTAM specifically states to all pilots to never fly into a thunderstorm, no matter the type of aircraft.
@tomatosoupwoo
@tomatosoupwoo 3 года назад
LRRPFco52, is right. And I’m pretty sure it can, it’d not be the safest ride ever though. A thunderstorm will literally push a airliner all around the place. Even heavy ones.

@@tomatosoupwoo I was on a contract air flight coming back from Panama in 1998 in an Israeli-owned 747, filled with 2nd Ranger Battalion after a Jungle Operations Training Center rotation. We hit a huge lower pressure pocket of air up at altitude, and the aircraft dropped like a rock for about 200ft, then hit good air with a slam. All the weapons under the seats slammed up against the bottoms of the seats, stewardesses hit the ceiling, then everything slammed back onto the floor. It was crazy. A moment of silence was broken when one of the hoahs yelled out, “Yeeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhhh!” and all the rest followed him with a loud roar of excitement. That wasn’t even a thunderstorm. I’ve been on approaches in airliners in weather, where we were just thrown around like a boot in a dryer. It was everything the pilot could do just to maintain some semblance of wings-level and nose pointed in the general direction of the intended fight path. Thunderstorms are bad ju-ju for planes.
