The A6M2b had been designed with no servotabs, being meant for at most mid-subsonic airspeeds; the controls would grow impossibly stiff past 400 kt indicated.

Depending on what statistics you look at the Corsair is the most succesful warbird there was. Depending on who you ask (me, me) it is the best looking aircraft ever built. I am routing for it!

I like the Corsairs unrivaled performance, but my personal favourite US WW2 carrier fighter is definately F6F. It's not the sportscar of fighters, but it gets the job done. Most importantly it gets you home. Sturdy, easy to fly. That's what I like.

@@aleksimakela6787 The all models of the Corsair is very sturdy and gets you home, plus the performance helps you avoid damage in the first place. Easy to fly, I can give you that the corsair does require a little more skill than the F6F to fly. But when you know what you are doing,reports indicate pilots found the Corsair as easy if not easyer in most kind of flying.

@@Col00Hague It probably was easy to fly once airborne, or at least comparable to contemporary fighters, but I understood it was the Corsair's landing characteristics that resulted in it's postponed service with US Navy. The initial troubles were sorted out, and Corsair saw service even in Korean war, so I must admit it's more of a personal preference that I'd take the F6F over it.

@@aleksimakela6787 The landing caricteristics where indeed there main point for higher skilled pilots, yet that factor was greatly exadurated due to the original landing patterns and some minor early issues such as how high the seat was, and how soft the suspension was. The Royal Navy adopted F4Us around the same time the USN rejected them. And the royal navy was able to make quick and simple adjustments to over come the initial concerns that the USN had. The main reason the F6F won the initial contract was due to the USN not wanting to put any thought into it, and some backdoor factors. Same as any contract. The the USMC used it and many times USMC pilots landed on CVs when needed and also landed aircraft that had taken many many hits. That said, I do not mean to put down or diminish your personal preference. All navy aircraft are cool in my mind and while I feel the F6Fs rep is over staited, it is still a very nice aircraft.

They also don’t have armor and a thin af frame. The point is that they see these pilots as expandable resources and those planes are designed to serve the emperor not keeping you alive just like a tie fighter

@@Gyyghhhhjjjkk not exactly when they were designed it was for one purpose kill and kill well they are light fast and have great range no other planes in the sky could even touch it without a bottle of liquid luck and so was proved in the first years of the war so they had no need for those innovations but then the Americans who lagged years behind in plane engineering caught up and were able to match it more or less which only then started proving the massive flaws in the design of the A6M2 Zero

@@notyomama1306 Their ships also had poor damage control as they were primarily geared toward offensive capability with much less regard for survivability. This does seem to stem from whole 'die for emperor' philosophy. Kamikaze bomb-airplanes also attest to same idea

You gotta balance for multiplayer... Also I doubt the japanese will give anyone the proper data. That's why most mods are SFM because of classified data. The Internet doesn't give full details only what can be put out there or is off. So if another country is to try and copy said jet or tank, they'll be off.

@@subjectc7505 The A-6M hasn't fought in combat in nearly 80 years and was outdated by the time the war ended. There really isn't much to be garnered in state secrets from it anymore. Especially since the few remaining are in private hands. Some are even in good flying condition still. That being said, an entrepreneuring model maker could potentially work with such an owner to gather the relevant data. Same goes for the F4U, although more abundant. Several of the Corsairs shown in "Baa Baa Black Sheep" (aka "Black Sheep Squadron") are even still flying. Obviously, it would have to be model maker with the relevant resources, so would likely be limited to Eagle Dynamics making it themselves.

@@lovehawks2814 It really doesn't matter, that's why it takes longer with modules like the F-16 and 18. because any amount of data for any flying object is very sensitive and countries that can't manufacturer or gets thirsty will reverse engineer and make something of thier fitting and liking. Also Games aren't meant to be hella realistic because it'll ruin others experiences.

@@subjectc7505 If realism were not important, then ED would have made the Standard Flight Model the only flight model. As for sensitive information, you are correct. However, there is a difference between classified data for a modern contemporary fighter craft such as the F-16 or F-18, neither of which can be legally owned privately, and retired aircraft from the 1940s. That being said, modern racing planes could out run and out maneuver most anything from that time period. If anything, the main concern in a dogfighter from World War II would be in the avionics, but even then, a cell phone could out perform that equipment. National governments and militaries do routinely declassify technologies in order to spur entrepreneurship and innovation. Ever hear of ARPAnet?

The Corsair. An American classic. And I believe that would be a the F4U-4 Corsair but it’s missing the air intake below the propeller. Also the Pilots of planes like the zero must’ve had massive balls to fight planes like the Corsair.

Don't think they saw too many Zero's at least not from carriers. By the time the US REALLY adopted the Corsair as a carrier aircraft, it was typically island battle support, CAS, air cover, etc (especially this being USMC). Late in the war the Marines had entire escort carriers to themselves, Corsairs and Avengers (sometimes ONLY Avengers) would simply be running ground support missions. Most of their USMC action was from land, but that was perfectly fine given the numerous islands. Interestingly this coloring was NOT WWII and was basically a mid-50's thing, I think it was only used on the AU-1 (basically an F4U-5) during the Korean War.

I'm confused too. If the flightmodel is from the P-51 and the cockpit obviously too, how is this a corsair? didn't like that video. but that was the first one I didn't like, so no real complaints from my side ;)

It's a mod I think. Mods aren't 100% accurate because the data is classified or unavailable. And he said the Zero is a Skin.

The F4U mod is very OP. I think they just took the P-51 flight model and bumped up the HP to match the Corsair, which would be terrible because the Corsair is much bigger and heavier than the P-51.

Also the Zero mod is NO WHERE CLOSE to the actual stats of the A6M Zero. The Zero was an agile turn fighter much lighter and much weaker airframe.

@@mytheoryofmind Not so much as paper thin but the fact that the actual Zero did not have self sealing fuel tanks, so any hits to the wing roots would cause a Zero to burst into flames.

I did this 2 times but in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 with Seafires in there too I did it on the Okinawa map. See my videos Corsair and Okinawa's bad defence 沖縄の悪い防衛 in the playlists Air War/Air War (U.S.A.)/Air War (日本). I did this with no mods I have both the F4U Corsair and the A6M Zero in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946. I don't do a good job but the videos are up.

There were some instances if contemporary comparative combat evaluation between FW190s and US Naval fighters. I think they showed that the main advantage the FW190 has (besides being relatively simple to control) is in high speed climbing, which seems to get more pronounced as you climb up to 10,000 feet. The FW190 A-8, though, was a fairly heavy aircraft in relation to the previous FW190 A models, although it had a charge injection system that it could use to increase power for a limited time. I don't know if DCS offers this but the wing cannons were an optional armament. If removed, the A model would match the A6M's armament better. The f4u being a carrier based fighter, one would expect that its low speed turn is way, way better than the FW190, which was designed with the opposite philosophy. All bets are off though because we don't know what kind of hybrid of P-51 / F4U was actually fighting. I would expect the P-51 to perform better at high speed, being at least marginally better than the FW-190 A-8 in every respect at every speed, not just low speed. I would expect that the results would be similar but reversed if an actual A6M were used, using the same tactics. The advantages of having a very big, powerful, heavy, fast aircraft would be marginalized in a close in dogfight.

This is factually not true the Last Corsair was produced in 1953 where as the last P-51 Mustang was produced in 1957 the last P-61 Black Widow was produced in 1954 The Last F6F Hellcat was produced in 1954 the last P-47 Thunderbolt was produced in 1955. Many WWII Piston driven fighters were still in production well into the 1950's long after the last Corsair had rolled off the line. As for the engines The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 used on the Corsair, Hellcat and production model P-47's Made 2100 HP where as the Wright R-3350 Duplex Cyclone Used on the earliest P-47 prototypes and then later on the B-29 Superfortress made 2200 HP. The Napier Sabre IIb used in the Hawker Tempest Made 2400 HP.

In real life the Zero was very light weight. They didn't armor the engine and cockpit. The US saw that the fuel tanks would leak because of light bladders. They came out with AP incindiary to get them burning.

The P-51 has fully automatic radiator flaps. You shouldn't only ever need to think about them if the auto mechanism is damaged. And, not 100% sure if it's modeled, but you're potentially losing some top speed if they're open more than they need to be.

My first DCS flight ever had me cheering about 45 seconds in to it as I performed a deadstick landing in a field in the TF-51 because I wasn't following manifold pressure and RPM limits. (I knew I wasn't, I just maxxed everything as I didn't yet know what the limits were or if DCS would punish me for exceeding them or just let it go like every other sim I'd ever flown before did. Was instantly impressed when it did conk out!) Or do you mean this mod affects the systems behavior somehow? (Haven't tried it and doubt I will be. I cannot understand what motivates people to put all this work into "products" that they can't sell and would be woefully substandard if they did. Particularly for a plane we're expecting to have an official model of soon like the F4U.)

In the 1st dog fight Zero vs Corsair the Japanese won The main reason was few technical problems which Corsairs had ,but the american pilots got acquainted with these planes.....havoc For the japanese was The whistle of death, for the marines The lovers of Okinawa ( becauce they supported them in the battle )

The Germans did supply aircraft and parts to the Japanese for evaluation (the Japanese didn't like them). Not sure they sent a FW but its within the bounds of possibility.

They did. Just look for "FW-190 Japan" and you'll even find photos of one, it was an A-5 model.

Dear valued Cap, thank you for your videos. I downloaded and installed the F4U mod, as I am very excited for the official module. Downloading the A6M skins tonight. You said the Hawaiian Islands for the map. My first guess is this is the Marianas map, but other comments state they’ve covered the whole map and not seen this terrain. Is this indeed the Marianas map?

As I understand the Zero was a major threat throughout the war in the hands of an experienced pilot. But it was extremely vulnerable. A 2 second burst of .50 cal could shred the Zeke. Towards the end of the war when the Japanese were running out of competent pilots Allied aircraft had a turkey shoot. I think the RNAS flew Corsairs for Britain, claiming a few A/A kills, but used more in the ground attack/anti shipping role.

Not throughout the war, only at the start when they tried to turn with the Zero and older fighter models. And when the the F6 Hellcat and Corsair came out they destoryed the Zero. At the start the Zero killed the Wildcat because they tried to turn with the Zero, can't remeber the kill ratio but it was bad. They then developed better tactics when they captured a damaged Zero. They worked out tactics using the Wildcat superior service celing and gave the Wildcat a better kill ratio. Newer fighters used their superior speed with boom and zoom tactics but didn't turn with the Zero. The newer fighters we talking 14:1 to kill ratios, the Zero was pretty useless at the end. Also the pilots rarely suvived from the Zero due to the lack of self sealing tanks and armor which was removed to make the fighter lighter and a better turner. Only use for the Zero at the end was kamikaze.

@@martinjefferson3395 I just know the Zero turned better than even the Spitefire. I would guess that intially the Spitfire tried to out turn a Zero and lost. I would imagine with the invasion of British colonies by Japan they would have faced older models of Spitfires who had about the same speed as the Zero which would have been at a disadvantage. Newer faster models of Spitfires with higher sevice celing combined with boom and zoom tactics would have had an advantage over the Zero.

@@martinjefferson3395 Spitfire V was faster, this seems like late in the war if they are reffered as vintage 1942. Tactics and everyting was developed after that. Here is something about British planes versus Zeros in 1942. "The Zero cemented its reputation in an April 1942 battle with well-trained English pilots over Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). In that sortie, 36 Zeroes took on 60 British aircraft-and shot down 27 of them, with the loss of just a single Zero" I would assume a couple of older Spitefires were there.

hey cap can you recreat another scene from flight of the intruder. where they get intercepted by a mig and ended up pulling back on the throttle to much had a engine shutdown. and some how it shook the mig off and their backup f4 jets took over.

Hello Cap, I understand that the Zero is a mod, however the actual Zero was a full ton lighter than the weight of the mod. (3,704 lb Empty and 6,164 lb full load). The Zero's actual armament was far lighter with only twin 20mm cannons with a meager 60 rounds per cannon and 2 7.7 mm machine guns with 500 rounds per gun. The Corsair could out run, out climb, and out dive the Zero but could NOT turn with an actual Zero. Simba would have eaten you for lunch in the turn fight. The way to fight a Zero was to hit it hard, then dive away, out run it, and re-engage on your own terms. Trying to turn with a Zero was pure foolishness and pilots were taught not to do this. Now for the Corsair, the R-2800 that the Corsair used could not pull 2380 HP even with water injection, it could only pull 2290 with water injection other than that everything seems about right.

During the Korean War U.S. Prop Planes shot down MIG's on a couple occasions-- The Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MIG-15 and The AU4 Corsair also shot down a MIG-15! Vietnam-- A-1 Skyraider shoots down MIG-17 I believe on two separate occasions!! Request Fly Either-- Hawker Hurricane, Super Tucano, P-47, P-51, or Spitfire! Against The MIG-15!! PLEASE😁✌ No way I've been making this request for quite some time now even got over 60 likes lmao and not one person told me The Corsair was in DCS!🤭🤣 I kno it's not the AU4 however PLEASE F-4U Corsair VS MIG-15!!

Real life zero had half the guns as you sorta mentioned, and yeah ZERO armor and ZERO self-sealing fuel tanks. Edit: Also I think this is technically an AU-1 if the coloring is correct - the Corsairs never looked like this till the mid-50's. It was probably used because BuNo 133710 was done in this exact paint (and squadron/tail #) so there are a few pictures of it which may have made things easier. Then again that was an F4U-7 with the Chin intake so.... who knows. Also did you say "setting radiators to manual" in the air-cooled Corsair? lmao looks like that opened the cowl flaps - you'd neeeeever EVER do this in-flight unless something is wrong or you're just doing some kinda extreme climb at lower speeds in a hot climate. Pains me so much haha - in real life, they add so much drag that if feels like you're falling out of the sky - we had to do it once in an Avenger due to suspected cowl flap actuator leak (so we decided to leave them open) and DAMN.

Also, I have obtained winwing gear, and enjoy it much more than TM. And, all due apologies and respect, I think the sponsor lead in would be much better voiced by you. I assume it is currently the US WW rep, but it does not sound very professional. I would assume he is very talented at many things, though in my opinion not so amazing at narration.

The arrester hook is not functional in this mod. Doubtful the arrester cables, physics are modeled in the CV13 mod.

Obviously War Thunder is an inferior flight sim, but what exactly is it about that game where the American 50 cals are so underwhelming compared to these games? They don't lose velocity fall and out of the sky after 500m in this for example. I really need to get DCS I guess.

Too bad you didn’t have a real A-6M. The zero was real fast, light, but also has no armor plating. But the A-6M was not a plane the Corsair could turn with. The Corsair had to use dive and slash maneuvers with the zero.

Compared to the Corsair, the A6M was slow AF (was a tad faster than the Wildcat in the early days though), but it turned and even climbed better. It's literally a cat and mouse fight.

the Fw is not a good mock zero the fw takes 20 sec to do a full 360 turn and a zero does it in literally 14 at most

Not a real fight, when you consider the F4U Corsair had an 11:1 kill ratio fighting Zeros during WWII. Even if you had a proper Zero to use for this it's a pretty bad match.

The biggest reason for that is by the time the Corsair entered service, most of the best Japanese pilots had been lost to combat. Earlier on in the war, the Japanese had the better aircraft and better training. It took the Americans about a year, 18 months to catch up. The Japanese were faced with the same problem of the Luftwaffe, less fuel, less training.

@@ngatiuk while the Japanese aircraft were faster and more manoeuvrable, their lack of armour would stop them from being classed as better aircraft in my opinion. The lack of armour was a huge factor in the Japanese losing, with the skilled pilots dieing they didn't have the time to train replacements. The Corsair was nearly as manoeuvrable and fast as the Zero, it was the lack of armour on the zero that continued to hurt the Japanese.

@@gort8203 We would loiter outside the CAP and watch the show waiting to top the teams off during air refueling and the F5 routinely sent the F15C to the ceiling to escape the fight knowing the F5 couldnt keep up or even attempt to.

@@1949crewchief Not sure what you are trying to say there. The contest proposed was one F-22 vs one F-5, guns only, and that is not much of a duel. Unless the F-22 pilot screws up you will simply watch the F-5 get gunned.

Well...considering the “non-F4U vs non-Zero” dogfight...personally I skipped the intro because I thought GR had like a pre-pre-release Corsair and a mod allowing the Zero using a German fighter (I thought it was the 109)...it makes for a mostly pointless dogfight comparison imho.

I personally left a like, though, since Cap's aim has been improving lately. I don't see his head sinking deep into the cockpit anymore either.

Geezus. What an abomination! Yeah, you can mix n match any aircraft you want these days and yes, interesting at best. But a JapaWulf would never have been. Now we have Toyota Camry's in NASCAR and Honda super-engineering in F! and Indy...They couldn't beat us in the air, in that time, but IRONICLY, they are beating us Economically today..
