Few more things from the other side of the fence: As well as flares, afterburner plumes are excellent identifiers in a furball. The F-5 has two dull yellow glows behind it, while the MiG-21 looks like a fucking blowtorch, with a bright white plume extending about 1-1.5 MiGlengths behind itself. Shapes also - squares/rectangles = F-5, sharp triangles = MiG-21. The tail fins in particular are really good identifiers as the F-5's is quite tall and straight, while the MiG's runs nearly a third of the length of the aircraft and is sharply raked back. Another example of what not to do (and arguably the most common example of it) is firing missiles too close. It's almost universal amongst the F-5 guys and with only two missiles, it can turn the situation against you very quickly. Your Sidewinders are not AIM-9Xs, they're not R-73s, they're not even R-60s. If the target is presenting a 3/4 or 1/4 aspect to you at less than about a mile, or a full planform at less than a mile and a half or two miles, *do not take the shot yet*. It will miss. The AIM-9P and P5 need some space to accelerate before they can begin turning very well, and the missile is best used at medium range (compared to the MiG's R-60, which is ideal in a knife fight). If you aren't sure, don't shoot. With the radar: there is no point leaving it turned off "because he might see me". The MiG-21's SPO gives only the vaguest sense of SA and the MiG-19's will only give any warning when locked from behind. 21 pilots are used to a constant beeping from the SPO because when it goes silent, it means even our own EWR can't see us and we're totally alone and without information. An F-5 in search mode can quite effectively mask itself because of this, and the MiG pilot probably won't realise you're there until you lock him. This is especially true if you're approaching him from the direction of his own forces, because he's already being painted from that direction by his own EWR and incoming allies. Keep the radar on as much as possible, but don't lock until you're ready to fire. Be aware that the MiG-21 (contrary to popular belief) *can* see behind itself, and in fact he can see behind himself far better than you can. Approach from below, not level or above. Below and behind is the only area he has a blindspot, because the periscope covers the entire rear hemisphere above the wings and fuselage. There is a significant overlap between what he can see by just turning his head, and what he can see using the periscope. The MiG-19 has even better rearwards visibility - never, ever approach from level or above. The dogfight mode can be used as a sort of boresight to reacquire targets you can't quite see by eye or by scope, but whose position you're fairly confident of. Search is also fairly useful, and at least currently in DCS, you can even pick targets out of ground clutter with a little practice - look for the brick moving in a consistent direction at a stable speed, then put the TDC over it, hit acquire, and wiggle the antenna elevation up and down until it grabs him. Lastly, don't fall for the MiG-21's silly low speed bullshit (you will lose, he stalls slower than you do and recovers from it easier). Hold your best rate speed and reel him in, you outrate him only slightly but it's enough to come out on top or at least keep the fight neutral. Conversely, do not even begin to attempt to rate fight a MiG-19, it will ruin your life as it outrates both F-5 and MiG-21 significantly. He doesn't have much ammo and may have trouble bringing his nose to bear, so stay close to him and try to force a scissors.
Some very good points here Ross, I was going to make another video with a lot of your tips already. Everytime I review tacview is when I notice people shooting missiles at less than 1000 feet and it always results in a miss, I just need some more examples to film and cover it correctly. I can't see any from tricker, so I'll reference someone else. The first 20 videos by Tactical Pascale cover everything you need to play multiplayer, including SRS setup and what to say on it. Practicing with a community is the best way to learn, so you don't have to worry about saying the wrong thing
*MIXED MUSHROOM AND SPINACH LASAGNA* This shit is a little complicated but well worth it. Make it when you’ve got people to impress or when you’re really fucking lonely. Real talk: this lasagna is better than friends. MAKES ENOUGH FOR 6 TO 8 PEOPLE AT ONCE OR YOUR SINGLE ASS FOR A WEEK AND A HALF *BASIL PESTO* _1⁄3 cup slivered or sliced almonds_ _1¼ cups packed torn basil leaves_ _2 tablespoons olive oil_ _2 tablespoons water_ _1 tablespoon lemon juice_ _½ teaspoon grated lemon zest_ _½ teaspoon salt_ _2 to 3 cloves garlic, chopped_ *MUSHROOM SPINACH FILLING* _16 ounces button or cremini mushrooms_ _1 teaspoon olive oil_ _6 cups spinach_ _Salt_ *_1 Pound lasagna noodles_* *_Double batch of Marinara_* *_Double batch of Ricotta_* *_Sliced tomatoes (optional)_* Put all the ingredients for the pesto in a food processor and blend until smooth-ish. No food processor? Chill the fuck out. Just put the almonds in a plastic bag and smash them up with a rolling pin or a can until they are tiny, and chop the rest of that shit up super small, too. Mix it with a fork until it looks like a paste. Set it aside. To make the filling, remove any tough mushroom stems and slice up the mushrooms into pieces no larger than a nickel. Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté for about 2 minutes. Fold in the spinach, add a small pinch of salt, and continue cooking until all the spinach is wilted, about 3 more minutes. Turn off the heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of the pesto. Taste and add more if you like. You know how you do. Heat your oven to 375°F. Grab an 8 x 10-inch baking dish. Cook the noodles according to the package directions. Ladle about 1 cup of the marinara sauce into the bottom of the baking dish and lay down enough noodles to cover the bottom with just a bit of overlap. Spread about one-third of the ricotta down, followed by one-third of the mushroom filling, and then pour another cup of the sauce over top. Spread a spoonful or two of the pesto over all of that and then do another layer of noodles. Repeat the whole process until you run out of room and top with the final layer of noodles. Cover the noodles with the remaining sauce. If you want to look extra fucking fancy, add sliced tomato rounds on top. Cover that whole heavy motherfucker with foil and throw it in the oven for about 30 minutes. Gently take off the foil after that and bake it until the edges of the noodles start to look a little golden, another 25 to 30 minutes. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes before going to town. The two single M39A2 revolver cannons mounted in the nose is some relatively heavy gun firepower for a jet like the F-5E, a bit different than the average boring single-mounted M61 Vulcan 20mm. cannon. The twin/quad cannons in a gunfighter concept are so devastating at close range and i love it, almost making it like Luftrausers. I can only think of another nation who equipped their jets like that, and that is France, who's Mirage 2000 has 2 a bit more +10mm.'s powerful 30mm. DEFA 554 revolver cannons mounted in the lower front fuselage. There was definitely thought put into arming jets like that, especially a gunfighter like the F-8 Crusader which had up to 4 but older Colt Mk.12 20mm. autocannons mounted on the cockpit sides.

Did anything change with the F5 targeting radar? I've read some comments that it might be bugged, and I certainly feel that it doesn't give a correct solution. I've even tried pulling the gun through the hostile, from back to front, with no hits. This is against constant rate turn AI... Yes I might suck, but even in an F86 I can hit them easier.
Just found this video 2 months later, as I was listening at 7:35 I heard my callsign in DCS get called by Magic and was like “ooh someone is flying the same callsign as me in the Cold War server” (callsign was Shark 4-6) then as the person responded I realized it was ME lmao, what are the odds I’d find myself in the background of a video I didn’t even know existed xd
Why don't you put the reticle-mode to AA1 when you lock him up with DogFightAft ? Why don't you use DogFightForwad when you attack him with sidewinder ? Just asking, not bashing
AA1 mode won't do anything if you're in a dogfight mode. Dogfight missle mode doesn't do much other than range, which you can do by eye, and if you do it by eye you can keep your radar off to be sneaky
Pretty much what everyone else said here. You can be sneaky but I prefer the radar mode as its more accurate and I rarely use dogfight forward, I just eyeball it

Works on all of them, however I think the GAR-8/9B needs like 8 seconds of lock time before it can even think of tracking something. The 9P and P5 are fantastic missiles, though.
Can someone tell me when the Cold War server is most active? When I try to go on it, it has 1 person, but when I can’t get on, there is 40 people. What the hell?
The F-5E module is a total CON! Only two sidewinders ...... makes this plane totally defenceless. Since the 70s, F-5Es could carry 4x sidewinders and modernized F-5Es are AMRAAM capable.
