Thank you for a great video. I enjoyed the personal touch. It made me feel we were just talking and building. It was extremely important that you gave a shout out to us older guys to one , encourage and pass on the tricks of the trade . Two, it reminded me of how much I love my model construction. Hours of free therapy! Don't ever quit, I am 63 and as long as I am able I will be at my hobby desk. Well done from the USN/Ret - Bravo Zulu. Keith
Thanks for taking the time to watch my vid I'm very happy that it helped you with your modelling journey in my opinion it's the best therapy time thanks again
Thanks for the instruction. Please keep them coming. You are the Bob Ross of modelling. Your voice and instruction is both helpful, relaxing and friendly. Who can beat that?
Thank you very much for your kind words sadly I cant make more vids I cant afford the equipment and software but the method in this vid you can adapt to most military aircraft and vehicles thanks for watching I do hope I can start up again all the best stay safe and happy modelling. 😊👍🙏
I finally get it!!!! I've watched hundreds if not thousands of RU-vid videos, but for some reason I never got the same results. This video made sense to me. Thanks for making this video!!!
Mate I'm one of those 20 year olds just getting into the hobby full on. I found this super helpful, I see these amazing paint jobs and they leave me so confused. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain things so clearly and patiently
If you do not have one, get yourself an airbrush pronto. I've had Pasche airbrushes when I was modelling 30 years ago. I started modelling again and decided to buy a new airbrush kit instead of digging through my barn to find my old kit. From Amazon I bought a Point Zero airbrush kit that comes with compressor and three airbrushes; this kit, compressor and all, cost me $89.00 and it works great, as good as my Pasche kit. Shoot my Pasche airbrush alone cost me nearly as much as this complete compressor and all kit. I like using Vallejo acrylic paints and with practice, you've painting models like an expert in no time at all. I have learned immensely from the gents on YT. It is all about patience and applying the techniques. You will also learn much from your mistakes. Start with some lower priced models, apply the techniques and then work in up to the larger scale models. Good luck. I see you are a hockey fan. Do you play? I played quite a bit of ice hockey (played since 10 years of age on through college and then many pick-up games and beer league. I really enjoyed the sport. I catch a couple NHL games a year. Also, I married a Canuck. As you may well know, hockey is the national passtime and nearly a religion in Canada.
Well said at the beginning :). Its a great beautiful hobby and sharing is important, learnt so much so far on youtube that i never thought i would be able to do. You lot are the unsung heroes of the Modeling world.
Thanks very much for watching I haven't uploaded in a very long time which I'm sorry about just life problems and family to sort out but I do hope to get back to soon thanks again for your kind words cheers
Thank you, thank you thank you. I almost gave up. I'm 61 years old. Ive built model airplanes my whole life. I couldn't figure out how to make them look real. You, my friend, changed all of that in a big way. I can't explain what you've done for me, but it's huge on a spiritual level. I don't exaggerate. VModel building is very personal. You've shown me how to be LEAPS better. I'm excited to show you my work. Thank you.
you are very welcome indeed its very easy to do but remember to have a couple of coats of matt varnish on not gloss matt gives you the surface tension if you have Facebook I ma member of scale model group called texas scale model builders we post there its a friendly group that loves all types of models heres the link if you want to join plus you can upload your model building journey facebook.com/groups/1630652633630686 have fun thanks again for watching my vid cheers :)
Nice Dot Filtering technique! A tip about where the heavier streaking takes place on the trailing edge flaps. Imagine the flaps up.... Fluid pools under the trailing edge of the gap panels, then streaks aft from there. When the flaps are extended, their leading edges are noticeably cleaner than the rest of the flap surfaces. It’s a distinct characteristic when the flaps are dropped.
I've been subscribed for a while now, really have to say that your tutorials are quite good, well explained and demonstrated very well. Please keep up the great work, many of us appreciate and respect what you're doing and saying...you're daughter was right, never underestimate the power of a child's insight. Thank you Faron.
Unfortunately I'm not uploading I need a new camera the webcam I'm using isn't tge best and ths audio is now really bad plus pinky use windows movie maker to edit as I'm a dope when it comes to using software lol I appreciate your comments just remember work from dark to light aand dont be afraid to experiment 👍👍👍👍
Academy and the Trumpeter are the two I’ve landed on and will go with the trumpeter. I couldn’t agree more that YT community has been awesome for the most part with sharing info. I’m thinking of trying to light my kit, but have just started looking into where to buy them. Great build great info and to those weathering and trying new things keep at it weathering is kind of a personal taste type of thing.
Hiya Clint thanks for the kind words I'd definitely go for the Trumpeter kit the Academy kit is date and has a lot of fit issues around the air intakes of like to do another big scale jet but they are very pricey hope all is well over there in your world I hope you do some vid on youtube I'm holding my channel for a while I need to buy new camera and software cheers again for stopping by.
Beautiful model. Ive never tried oil paints before but looking at your results I’m definitely considering giving it a try. Im currently working on a 1/48 scale Superhornet and found your video while looking for weathering ideas. Got a 1/48 scale A-10 waiting to be built as well
Oils definitely change the look of your models always be sure to seal everything in with an enamel varnish before you put the oils on and let it cure for a day or two for best results good luck with your A10 cheers 👍
Awesome, thank you for sharing, im struggling now with my FA-18F as i dont know where to start with the weathering but now ive decided to do oils the result is really nice and theres plenty of time to try, play and re-do things. Greetings from Czech rep.
I'm glad your having fun,but take your time, also look at the other vids I did regarding the weathering on the F18 its vid that I demonstrated usI g the latex masking fluid that I applied to the panel lines then after that had dried off i then air brushed a thinned down 50/50 mix of tamiya X19 smoke i let that dry then i peeled off the masking fluid and you get a great effect have fun and dont be afraid to experiment it's only paint
Found you as I am building my first model plane with weathering Its 1/48 scale Fa 18 revell model The little hobby I started 3 months ago has escalated very quickly into obsession almost lol
Beautiful work man, weathering a model gives it more drama, heavy weathering makes a model more believable, the more believable, the more interesting. Gladly share any tips with you, the more the merrier.
I'm glad you found this helpful I'm glad this video is a good reference at the moment I'm not uploading any videos until I can get a good camera to record with as the webcam I use does not work that well for me now but thank you for watching it's really appreciated and I'm glad you found it useful
Thank you for your reply.Mate I’m watching this thinking how can you doubt if showing your methods are worth it.?They are.!Again, great tutorial, showing a great result. The F-18 wing demonstration is marvelous and is really making me think about the Revell 1/32 f-18( which is on a good deal at mo)This is how I found your channel by searching ‘1/32 f-18’,glad I did now. Please consider doing a vid of your latest build(MiG-29 hopefully)I know it’s easy for me to say!..Anyhow be cool and happy new 2020..I’m off to look at that F-18 deal again!👍
Get it it's a good kit from what I hear the Academy kit I did was a mediocre kit at best the revell one looks good have fun with it and just take your time on it I'll side more vids in the future happy new year
I did this technique wth ammo by Mig oil brushes ( black, rust and dust). I lightly flooded the area with thinner first, then applied the dots of oil paint...did the whole top side of a Rhino in about 20 minutes. Give it a try next time 👍
Thanks for the comment sadly I've stopped uploading cos I no longer have any camera or software to upload but I will return I the future thanks for watching cheers stay safe.
@@Adamslee72 that's sad but I know what u mean I just started uploading last week I didn't have a camera and the interest was not there... I do look forward to the future.... stay safe also
International British Modeler cheers martin i hope to have her finished in a couple of weeks dont know what to start next though to many kits so little time thanks for watching mate have a great weekend 👍🏻🍺🍻
I use tamiya extra thin for cockpit builds missiles small assemblies then a thicker glue like tamiya glue and super glue for supports like landing gear and I use PVA glue on canopies hooe that helps a bit.
Great looking F-18 there mate.!.Thank you for being so open and sharing your methods and skill.Ive started again in the past few years. But your right, people do get all ‘top secret’ about their knowledge.Which frustrated me when I was in a modeling club as a younger man.Sorry to hear of these silly attitudes are still here but now online.?But please hang in there as this has been a great tutorial. Plus we wanna know if you got the MiG-29!?!?
Aha lol thanks for the kind words mate yes unfortunately there are people in the world who dont want to share any of their secrets I'm happy to share what I have ,I do had the mig 29 1/32 big trumpeter its primed and pre shaded but i haven't had the motivation to carry on with as I'm not doing anymore vids just yet due to my crspoy cam and software lol and I'm no good at editing vids but I'll see what happens in the new year thanks again for watching my vid this is good and I'm happy to of been some help
Appreciate this vid. I'm working on a 72nd scale Hornet at the moment (my 7th or 8th model I think) and I'm looking to up my game from the more basic painting I've been doing up to now.
I'm glad it has helped or helping lol I haven't uploaded anything else in over a year now I think apart from a Bf109 but I might in the future just ask me anything and I'll answer the best I can regarding the hobby thanks for watching very much appreciated take care and stay safe.
Thanks very much appreciated i have no camera at the moment so vids are off the radar until I can get a new one thanks for your kind words its a cool kit shame it's no longer made
thanks for your comment really appreciated at the moment i cant upload any content due to my old pc dying on me which had windows movie maker program on it which i used to create my vid they are simple yes but the content is okish lol also microsoft took it off their website so im lost until i can get new software and camera i like cheers and stay tuned there will be lots of vids coming soon as i have sorted myself out :)
Brill stuff mukka, is that "sansador " that you use to clean up the oils ? If so that's what I use , it's not as harsh as white spirit etc on the model. I love it ! Great stuff as usual brother !!
Mottys Military Models - Steve Mottram hiya mate yes i use sansador and ak enamel thinner both good to use for this method this bird is done ill be doing a final reveal soon up next is Trumpeter's Mig-29A 1/32 thanks for watching mate i teally aporeciate it thanks
Enjoyed the vid. Some good tips Faron. Like to see how other people approach weathering. Btw. Have you seen the latest flory vid. Never in a million years would I have tried that method but actually it is super impressive . Ref content. It will take a while to build backup viewers. RU-vid has died down over the past few years. Everyone seems Facebook crazy. I find that format too overwhelming. Google plus and RU-vid are more my pace...albeit slower and steadier in terms of views. But hey...instant gratification is over rated lol
Armour Empire Hiya Mark thanks for the awesome comment i thought fb would be the place to go, but im old school lol i like youtube i cant edit to save my life but hey what you see is what you get lol ,yeah i saw the flory vid insane but very effective the mig looked very nice and the decals became more uniformed with the paint scheme thanks again for watching i really appreciate it tganks bud 👍🏻🍺🍻
Ron Kirk Thank you very much for your kind words Ron its a timely process but rewarding thanks for watching i really appreciate the support many thanks
Once all decals are on I used Tamiya XF86 matt varnish thinned with X20A the matt finish gives a better surface to work the oil paints for the stains and smears,.... do your oil panel lines before you matt varnish a tad confusing sorry but panels lines need the gloss to work properly hope that helps happy modelling
Yes I always prime with the appropriate colour this kit infused mig ammo grey primer it's very thin so multiple dust coats then I left it for 48 hours to fully cure and where it went a bit rough in places I sanded it down with a buffing sanding stick it's a very fine sander almost smooth as paper the sanding stick then pre shaded then the ghost grey in top etc.... thanks for watching u might be doing more in the new year merry Christmas.
I have a old revell 1:48 F-18C kit I am starting to work on and I just noticed that most of the details are not recessed but raised. I have no idea how to "panel line wash" (pinwash) them. Any advice?
To be honest I would of re scribed the panel lines raised lines are a nightmare sign of an old kit you use a wash but I'd rescribe if you want to continue with the kit best F18 kuts are hasegawa and hobby boss do a good kit too
Nice trick to watch. One question: do you let the thinner to get dry itself, or do you use an airbrush to have it dry? And do you think I can do this with thinner and oil paint on acrylic painted base with an acrylic gloss ?
I let it air dry oil paints or enamels work best for this ,acrylics are not forgiving though uiu would have to work fast but you can use a retarder to slow the acrylics drying time
Hello again I just re read your comments sorry to of misunderstanding you answer is yes you can use oil paint and enamels on acrylic gloss varnish just make sure its fully cured for a couple of days, also after your gloss coat apply a Matt coat what you have seen in my vid is on a Matt finish the effect needs surface tension Hope's this helps
The oil paints were just a cheap set I bought from town I don't really target expensive oil paints I think you don't need them j tend to use lamp black umber and an ochre as well white and black I place the paints on card board this extracts the linseed oil out of the pigments and helps to dry quicker too thanks for watching very much appreciated cheers and happy modelling
I watched your tutorial and applied that technique to my EA-6b Prowler, great inspiration! See here the result: www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/312897-148-monogram-ea-6b-prowler-vaq-141-shadowhawks/
Lol the only advise I can give you is just practice and watch as many tutorials as you can get an old model and use it as a guinea pig to test the different types of techniques out there
Well the first one I did came out uh...bad but...better than I expected still,I just suck at getting the right colours and trying to not leave strokes .-.
You need a flat brush of a good quality and don't apply to much pressure else you might leave brush strokes and it's always best when painting buy hand to apply two three thin cotes than one thick cote when it cones to the main colour or camo pattern the weathering is all trial and error just keep at it mate all the best happy modelling
