Check out the Merch Store: teespring.com/stores/growling-sidewinder-store Just to be clear, I'm not recommending you fly low, we've talked about this many times now, try to start every engagement as high as you can and above Mach 1, Respect the MAR, and try to force your bandit low by firing missiles at him from the Higher position then defend and try and kill him. Pick your fights based on ones you can win, be patient because once you do get those kills they're pretty satisfying, nothing like waiting for your prey to fall into the trap. Just real quick in case you wonder why the navy uses the f18. Basically, the navy program was in desperate need of a multi-roll stable munitions platform capable with standoff weapons, the tomcat was still the main air to air platform until its late life cycle. Mid 90s the cold war has long been over and the tomcat has become nothing more than an air recon plane, enter the amraam and the hornet is now a more precise a2a platform sufficient for fleet defense. The f15 is in full swing as king of the skys and the f22, the world's first 5th gen fighter will enter service in just 10 years, really wasn't anything to compete with either of them just check the kill ratios online. There just wasn't any room for the navy to have its own program, luckily the f35 can be launched from cruisers so the navy is happy

I struggled for a long time in the Hornet in PVP but I rarely get killed anymore. Even in a 1v1 scenario the advantage is I carry 6 120C and 2 Aim 9x while the 16's usually only carry 6 120's so I will still have missiles when the other guy has none so the best he can do is run to the cover of him sams. 8 (and even 10) 120C's also work but you need to fire early to get them defensive. 6 is almost always enough. Key is to understand and respect the MAR.

If the F15 and F16 are so much better than the F18, why is the F18 still in service and so highly regarded? Is it because the F18 can carry better/more ordnance than the other two or is it more maneuverable in lower altitudes and at lower speed?

Because the requirements and philosophy of deployment of the Navy are somewhat different than the requirements and philosophy of the Airforce. It's a given - carrier adapted aircraft of similar era offer generally lower performance than land based aircraft of the same era, quite a few compromises must be made to build an aircraft capable of dealing with the brutal stress of operating on a CATOBAR carrier. For an early 4th gen CATOBAR aircraft, the hornet is actually a very capable Plane.

E and F model hornets are wayyyy more capable than the C models in DCS . The Navy got rid of all their C models this year.

@@arcanesoldierx Echo/Foxtrot are F18s in name only... they are basically a completely different airplane, that conveniently (for reasons) looks very very similar. They are a late gen4/gen4+ aircraft. Completely different animal. Politics and budgeting are responsable for that - really it should have been given a new designation, but it was easier to push through the claim it was a "variant" of an existing plane rather than a completely new plane. Since it would have been a problem with acquiring the F35 coming on line. Granted, alot of the initial design work was taken from the OG F18, which simplified the design phase of the plane and resulted in a cheaper buy in, but other than the overall form factor, underneath the skin - it is a totally different plane.

I was wondering why you would think F/A-18 is 100% ultimately inferior to F-16 and F-15 in BVR? Is it due its low thrust/weight ratio? Anyhow F-14 has even less thrust/weight ratio than a Hornet. So would you suggest the tactics for F-14 would only focus on long range capabilities of AWG-9 and Phoenixes? Thanks.

On a merge, two planes fly towards each other with the understanding that the planes will pass each other. Well with a very good missile couldn't you act like you're merging and at the last moment fire your missile and do a high G turn away? The missile will probably do a face plant on the other plane.

Does anyone think the F18 in DCS is underpowered? I've read the NATOPS manual and it says you get intake vibration at Mach 1.73! I've never seen that Mach number flying the F18 in DCS.

I've hit Mach 1.8 flying at 40,000 feet with the hornet in DCS, so it's definitely possible. Just have to keep it in thinner air.

Do you think this would be a same scenario in real life? A Hornet staying low to survive in an environment of Vipers and Eagles? Didn't Hornets and now especially Super Hornets, have better radars than Vipers? I don't know about Eagles. C.W. Lemoine talks in an interview where he had trouble with Eagles in his Viper but, not so in His Hornet. I don't know if he ever flew a Super Hornet. When he was in the Navy, I think he was always in an aggressor squadron. I dont k ow, my brain ways takes these situations you put yourself into in the game, and think about what it would be like in real life.

I think if they were sent in yes but I would imagine in real life they would have had some f-15s and f-22s go ahead of them and clear the way. I don’t think in real life they would throw hornets as the first line fighter and be like ok have fun. I mean I hope not lol.

@@GrowlingSidewinder oh yeah for sure! Military personnel already have said that f-15s will be the fullbacks to the f-22 and the same for the F-18 to the Navys F-35C. Just for the amount of firepower they can bring forward. I was just talking about in this scenario you put yourself into. I personally think they would clean house considering they have made the Super Hornet more into that fleet interceptor role. Correct me if I'm wrong. Im just basing this off of thinking that the Super Hornet has the more powerful radar of the three. Especially when the Block 3 comes around. Which I'm also sure will be before the Air Force gets the new f-15ex and also upgrades their fleet of Vipers. Amraams for everyone! You get an Amraam! and you get an Amraam! You get an Amraam! Everyone gets Amraams!

What I dont understand... if you have a look at the stats of the F-16 the thrust/weight ratio is 1.095 to 1.24 (loaded) compared to a 0.96 to 1.13 (loaded). why is it disadvantageous to stay high in a BVR fitht than? or is it just a theoretical wikipedia thing?

Well if you stay high, your are a easy target for the enemy missile because of the thinner air. So you both normaly shot your fist missile and go then lower to make it harder for the first missile to hit you.

So I'm having the same question go through my head video after video... when I fly at a decent altitude around 350-370 knots, I run out of fuel in ~10 minutes. I typically set my bingo for around 3000 just so I know when to pull a U-turn but in your videos you always seem to have 'some' fuel left which I don't get because Afterburners in a dog-fight will chew through the tank in seconds. How do you manage to stay airborne for so long with just a center-tank? Are there midair refuels you're doing off-camera and just edited out?

No I just go in and out of burner as needed and also keep in mind higher altitude burns less fuel. So that’s another reason to go high.

you can fly the F/A-18 as good as the F-16 in BVR situations, if you know how to fly it. This video is a bit misinformed.

BVR is an energy game, and the F18 with it's low amount of wing sweep is to draggy for this.

@@itsokaytobeaselfhatingjew5971 1st of all I would agree with you if we were having this conversation during the summer. The F-18 was garbage back then. They have silently improved its flight model. 2. The F-16 has obviously an advantage over the F-18. Not by a huge margin though. 3. If they approach the F-16 in a realistic manner, meaning having an accurate flight model, then a loaded F-16 with BVR weapons wouldn't go above 1.1 Mach plus if store damage were to be introduced high speeds and high G's would limit the current performance of the F-16. 4. The F-18 has a much better and nore jamming resistant radar than the F-16. Right now jamming is non existent and both the F-16s and F-18s radars perform the same. 5. BVR is mostly about tactics, and not so much about performance. For the F-16 to achieve top performance would mean that in actual combat, it's fuel would last at most 10 minutes before bingo. BVR is a much deeper than most casual PvP servers seem to have. All I wanted to say is, that staying in low altitudes is a suicide for the F-18.

@@arxidamos13 I understand what you are trying to say, but the F18 is not an air dominance fighter, and it will be outclassed by most planes designed for this task. I am talking about when fighting an equal enemy like Russia or China, fighting states like Irak is like clubbing baby seals. I pick up a lot of rumors that Israel is selling USA tech to China, so they are on more equal terms than ever before in history. Darn commies!

Agree the best part of DCS is to do multiple hopes n survive every time. I always remind myself strategy before ACM and always have a way out... if possible :-) I recommend reading the book of Robert L. Shaw Fighter Combat Manoeuvering and Tactics. Fly safe!

@@Mike_Romeo VR is way better you need the chops to run it I got a Reverb G2 and 5800X and 3080 RTX and got no issue with FPS the only downside I see is OBS doesn't play nice with WMR window ATM. I see all these flight sims setups with 1000 thousand invested in VKB, winning, and Virpils and got shitty PC's and monitors next to them I just shake my head.

F18 can take off from carriers and has a higher payload of weapons, but the f16 has a bubble cockpit so that you can see all around. Personally I prefer the f18.

The hornet has recently been retired from the blue angels and now they will use either the f-35 or the super hornet which is the advanced model. Really it’s an opinion based question but I will go with the f18 or f22 any day.
