Kinetic F/A-18D Hornet VMFA-121 Green Knights USMC in 1/48 scale by The Inner Nerd.
Instructional time lapse video of the full build, painting and weathering of the 1/48 scale F/A-18D Hornet VMFA-121 Green Knights USMC by Kinetic in 1/48 scale as shown by The Inner Nerd
decisionheightdecals/
The first part of this video shows the use of Photo Etched parts and scratch building techniques to detail hydraulic pipes and electrical cables professionally and cheaply around both the cockpit and wheel bays.
The second part shows surface preparation techniques such as filling panel gaps and seams with Deluxe Materials Perfect Plastic Putty modelling filler/putty and sanding them smooth to get a seamless join between parts using a range of sand papers from 800, 1200, 2000, and 3000p dpi grit papers. Also Black Basing techniques are included in this section using Mr Hobby "Mr Surfacer 1000, 1200 & 1500 Finishing Surfacer" thinned with cellulose lacquer thinners to prime the surface ready for painting, sprayed through an airbrush.
The third part of the video demonstrates the BLACK-BASING technique used to achieve a pre-weathered look and surface texture replicating that of an aged and worn aircraft. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used with Badger 1100 with Anti-Pulsation Tank Working Pressure 22psi (1.51bar). Also included in this section is the Engine Exhaust painting using Alclad 2 Lacquers (Airframe Aluminium, Aluminium, Steel, Jet Exhaust, Copper & Pale Burnt Metal) and Tamiya clear paints to create a burnt metal effect. 3 layers of Tamiya X-22 Ts-13 clear gloss seal the decals in. This can be decanted and sprayed through an airbrush such as the Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo or sprayed directly from the aerosol spray rattle can.
Model Maker aftermarket Decals follow painting with the aid of Mr Hobby Mr Mark Setter & Softer products. These products allow the decal to form to the shapes and panel lines of the surface which you can see in the video. Next is the weathering of the model. This is started using Abteilung 502 & Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with white spirit to a wash consistency. Then used as a panel line wash the oil is applied across the model to achieve a dirty, grimey & worn look. Further weathering including Unthinned Abteilung 502 Oil Paints to create streaking and water marks, along with AK Interactive weathering Pigments (Gun Metal, Russian Earth, Europe Earth, Medium Rust and Pigment Fixer, Worn Effects, Dark Streaking Grime Rainmark Effects) concludes weathering.
Items Used Airbrush: Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline Solo

I served in OIF OEF 03-05 and a Hornet just like this one saved my life. I was told they were based out of MCAS Miramar in 03 and after a lot of research Post Service, I was able to find out they were the Green Knights. The decals are of my children that would have not been here today had it not been for those Marine Pilots. The number BuNo 5 is for the number to teammates that didn't come home with us and the 9/11 Never Forget decal was for my service before and after 9/11. God bless the United States Marine Corps (No better friend, no worst enemy), all of those heroes that stayed over in the sandbox and from the USA, Canada, Australia and GB. God bless "The Inner Nerd" for his great service to those who served. A true professional and perfectionist when building Model Aircraft. Emailing and in communication constantly to verify accuracy and authenticity. Good work my friend.

I also served in OIF and OEF. I was a crew chief with the BATs squadron. A lot of ass kicking in the sandbox. Thank you for your service Marine and Semper Fi. To The Inner Nerd, excellent attention to detail. A lot of our Hornets were previous Navy D Model Hornets and had a lot of cosmetic issues. The GAPs that people are mentioning were indeed common but nothing a Marine cant fix with some duct tape. Got to keep killing and fighting. SSGT Suarez, USMC 00-08. OORAH and Semper FI!

I've been watching video of scale model makers here on YT for quite a while, some with different techniques, some others with voice commentary, different styles, funny experiments and so on... and, quite frankly, your attention to detail is amazing, definitely superior if compared to the others, you made it looking identical to the real one. Instantly subbed as I've seen the finished model preview at the beginning. Wow!!

Fantastic build as always! One quick note. Maybe your client wanted it but USMC F/A-18Ds did not use the FLIR on the intake. I believe USMC Hornets used LITENING pods in the centerline position. Other than that absolutely stunning build.

It wasn't easy! I fitted it in stages over about 2 days to let the glue cure properly before fitting the next section in place. The biggest problem for me was the intakes. One side had a gap of around 2mm that needed to be filled and blended into the fuselage because it was completely the wrong shape

This is a wonderful model of a Hornet! I wish I knew half of what you've _forgotten_ about weathering/finishing models -- I think I'd be a happy modeler then. ;) On the Hornets we overhauled (before I retired), the "inner" areas around the flaps and other flight controls were painted a dark red (I don't know what shade), but this model doesn't lose _anything_ by not having the "red" in those (relatively hard-to-see) areas. When flaps, etc., are extended/down, the "red" is quite obvious on Navy aircraft of all types, but I don't know whether it's worth worrying about on models since many/most? probably don't leave "room" for that kind of detail.

I spent roughly 16 years out of my 22 year career in the Marine Corps around Hornets and have about 3K personal photos and have 'never' seen red in those areas. From as early as 86, everything has been gray.

I use a Hasegawa Try Tool for re-scibing more detail can be seen here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GK9-Wenl1zQ.html The washes are cleaned off with no thinners at all unless the wash is particularly stubborn in some areas. The gloss coat should be sufficiently shiny to clean the wash off without any thinners to help.

Very nice work on a not very easy kit One point I see is that there still is a gap between the front fuselage and the front canopy as well as on the joint of the top and bottom fuselage at the back (hopefully this is heeden by the horizontal stabilazers)
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 5 лет назад
Thanks and you're right it was not an easy kit to make but glad it came together on the end. As for the canopy gap - I looked at a lot of reference photos and there was a consistent inconsistency with this area. Some aircraft had a very pronounced panel line and others didn't. Photos of VK05 did actually show a definate panel gap/line around the front canopy section so I decided to not make it completely smooth. Doesn't make much sense since you would expect the seam to be, well, seamless but thats how it "seams" to be on the real thing.

Nicely done. I've been using the black basing technique since I watched your Academy Phantom build (mine is sitting on the shelf half finished- it became a chore and I was not enjoying it...maybe I'll get back to it someday). I've used it on Tamiya's F-14A & D, AMK Mig 31 and Bandia's 1/48 X-Wing. All of them came out great. Do you still polish your clear coat before you weather the kit? My suggestion for a future build is Hasagawa's 1/48 SH3 Seaking.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 5 лет назад
Thank you. And that's great to hear that my videos have inspired you to use the same techniques! I prefer the black basing technique to pre-shading as it gives the model a primer coat as well as a base to work on. The variance in colour tones is much easier and controllable too since you can use the different base colours like I did in this one to affect the overall top coat. Sad to hear that your F4 has been shelved but I know what you mean about a chore - some of my models get to that stage too and I just loose inspiration to complete them, although I always do. To answer your question - yes. I still flat and polish the top coat but since I've switched to the Mr Color GX100 & self-leveling thinners it is less necessary as it dries with little to no orange peeling. The only areas I do now are the decals to reduce the raised "bubble" they cause due to their own thickness. Thanks for suggesting a new build! I do fancy a Seaking, especially the SH3 I like the Navy White and Orange scheme

@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 2 года назад
Thank you. This one was a joy to weather - the F-18's have some interesting weathering going on overall. The ash would have been a mix of my own making. But for a grey like this I would suggest using AMMO's Blue Dirt wash if you're looking for an off-the-shelf wash of the same colour. That's what I use now on my most recent builds and is a very useful colour for grey aircraft parts. A slightly more brown toned wash would be AMMO's Deep Grey wash. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

Hello. It's all down to the sanding to make sure both parts are perfectly square. I did put a little filler to smoothen out the join too so that it looked one like one unit and as it does on the real thing. @TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 5 лет назад
I'm not sure since Ive never built or seen the hasegawa kit. What I can say is that this one is very detailed and has lots of variant options. Both single and twin seater in the same kit! However the fuselage mating is very tricky and takes a lot of dry fitting and clamping into position so is bot for beginners. Some massive gaps too on some areas which need A LOT of work to make them acceptable. Other than that though I would build one again if it wasn't so big! 1/72 hornets for me in the future if any 😅
@TheModelGuy
@TheModelGuy 5 лет назад
Each kit has its strengths and weaknesses. The Kinetic Bug is newer, so panel lines look nice and there are lots of details out of the box. You can build it OOB and have a nice Hornet. But be ready for some fit issues on the nose and mis-labeled parts in the instructions. The Hasegawa kit looks good, especially with it being from 1993 but to match the detail of the Kinetic Bug, you'll be tossing a bit of aftermarket PE/resin at it. It also has some fit issues, especially around the engine intakes so be ready for a bit of work. You can't go wrong with either kit, but price wise you're better off looking at the Kinetic Bug. It's quite a bit cheaper than the Hasegawa ones which are still holding high prices. With 25 year old decals and a weak cockpit you'll need to get some aftermarket stuff for a nice finish. Hope that helps. RU-vid Doogs Kinetic Hornet review and he does a full build of one.

@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 3 года назад
I only use one airbrush and that's a Harder & Steebeck Evolution Silverline with a 0.15mm nozzle. The airbrush is less important than the thinning of the paint here. The paint has to be thinned sufficiently to be able to get the fine and delicate pattern needed in the marbelling technique, an airbrush is only as good as the paint you send through it. I hope that helps and thanks for watching :)

The Inner Nerd Great work either way,I live in Jacksonville Florida where we have Mayport Naval Station and the Naval air station where the Blue Angles were born in 1946 but I’ve been fortunate to go out on a friends and family cruise in 97 where I watched F14s breaking the sound barrier at deck level as well as F18 (Legacy birds) also breaking the sound barrier and HALO jumps from a east coast seal team as well as HAHO jumps as well it was a great day and I was friends with the first casualty of Desert Storm (Scott Spiker with my favorite attack unit VFA 81 Sunliners off the Saratoga who was shot down the opening night of hostilities) I had been at a Bar b q at his place before he went on deployment,you might consider doing his bird the Sunliners markings are great,keep modeling and thanks.

Brilliantly exacuted weathering and detailed model yet no seatbelt details at the end? I understand its to the modelers taste but when it comes to flying, something to strap you in sorta comes with the package!

Thank you. As yes I know but as this was a commission order I wasn't asked to include seatbelts or any other scratch building (or keep to minimum at least) so that's why. Really they should come woth this kit in my opinion. The kit isn't cheap so some models belts or PE ones would be well received
@martinbecka87
@martinbecka87 4 года назад
@@TheInnerNerd I'm pretty late, but for someone else the info could be useful. Seatbelts are included together with other PE details. They are also displayed on the seat in instructions, however they are not mentioned as a building step nor marked with number. At least in my "Aussie" kit it was like that

I assume you know how magnets work so didn't waist time showing you them as they can be seen working in the final images. Also footage on this srea was hard to capture as the angle to get the footage interfiered with what I could see when applying the magnets into the wing sections. Sorry for not including this in the video in enough depth

I disagree. I normally post videos of me making scale model kits. This happened to be one for a customer who wanted to see the video of me making it. I had to include some information about it being a saleable product as some aspects like the loadout was specified by the customer. Someone somewhere would ask why that loadout, who are the names and why that specific squadron. By including this in the video viewers know this was a pre-specified detail go be included.

As I said in other comments to your job, well I find your way to modelling a little approximate, and to give some examples, you forgot to put seat belts on this model, wind screen leaves a big gap from fuselage, and last but non least, Hornets never have air brake open during parking, unless they're under maintenance, but this is not the case. another thumb down for you my friend.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 года назад
Thank you for your concern and giving me a thumbs down to prove it. If you have read some of the other comments you’ll see that this was a commission build and I was requested to fit the air brake in the up position. Also you are further un-informed that hornets can have gaps around the canopy - there is even someone that used to work on carriers commenting saying that this is the case, so my approximations are accurate depending on the source. There are no seatbelts on this model as there could be an option for pilot figures to be inserted as the customer had asked me to leave these empty. Since you have so much constructive criticisms for my channel, it would be useful to start your own to show me how exactly you make a perfect model.

@@TheInnerNerd i build models and i'm a member of a large community here in my country, no needs to show off on RU-vid as i build models for my personal satisfaction, and not to receive good feedback from people.I'm used to learn from critics, but It Is not your case off course. a gap in windscreen likes yours would be a massive gap in a real jet. Anyway go on making your mistakes, and take care of you. leaving a kit without seatbelts and without figures, makes obvious to think you forgot them,and you did! otherwise you would have put figures in it.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 года назад
@@mikesmullah Okay big deal. Is this how you welcome new members to your community in your country? By listing all the things you think are wrong and then telling them to not upload to RU-vid until you're good enough. Doesn't sound very inviting to me. But good for you. I think you are missing the point of my uploads however. I do it for the same reason as you - the satisfaction. And if the videos get more people interested in the hobby regardless of skill then surely that's a good thing right? I don't do it to show off, nor get feedback. I do it because I enjoy making models and making videos. I have taken on board criticism before and that's helped me improve. Again, this model was for a customer (as seen in the pinned comment if you need further validation I am not lying or forgetting). So the belts were left off for future display purposes. I don't understand what you are getting so upset over someone else's work. I'm not trying to teach or guide. I enjoy the hobby and people like you suck the fun out of it for newcomers and will destroy the community and people's confidence to give it a go. We have to start somewhere and with each model we learn
