Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit as a basis of the video. The tools I use can be considered professional and this video is about the skills of basic modelling using the correct tools that make the job easier. This must not be confused with a starter set challenge where only the basic tools in the set are to be used.

This video explains my process in the building, painting and weathering of Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit. I start the video by building the scale model kit using Tamiya and AK Interactive glues and Mr Hobby tools. The key to building the Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit is to carefully read the instructions and assemble, using the tutorial as a guide. Take care in assembling the scale model kit so the the parts fit accurately and align as intended, this is the easiest way of speeding up the build.
To paint the Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit it is best to use an airbrush. This video is designed to cover the airbrush basics so that you can see the thinning of paint and application onto the scale model kit. Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline is used in this video along with AK Interactive Real Colors, Tamiya Acrylics, Mr Hobby Lacquer and Alclad II Metal effect Lacquers. Thinning paint is very important so I will explain how to do that using the correct thinners for each paint type.
Decals are applied with the aid of Tamiya Mark Fit Strong. This is a much more intense product than Micro Sol an Set solution and helps conform even the thickest decals onto the Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit details.
The final part is the weathering using more AK Interactive weathering products as well as artists oil paints from Winsor & Newton and Abteilung 502, weathering washes from AMMO by MIG Jimenez and finally VMS Pigments. I start the weathering process using an enamel wash to bring out the panel lines on the scale model kit. Here I use oil washes from AMMO. To seal those in I use a clear acrylic coat from VMS Matte varnish. Further and more detailed weathering follows using artist oil paints which enable me to add streaks, grime and bleaching onto the model to give it a more aged, used and weathered effect. The VMS matte clearcoat varnish is airbrushed onto the Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit. This matte varnish will help the weathering process as the matte finish allows more oil paint to stain the model surface. Dust and mud weathering effects are created using VMS pigments to imitate the weathering on tyres and undercarriage/landing gear.
Final assembly of the Kinetic IAF F-16I SUFA in 1/48 scale model kit is completed using VMS super glue. All of the final small parts and lights are added onto the model kit to complete the model build.

Hey gang, welcome back! Comment your worst kits here, lets share our struggles! See my incomplete build of Kinetic's 1/48 F-16I SUFA. This kit uses the same moulds as alllll of their other F-16's (sigh) so I would go buy a Tamiya one instead... Hope you enjoy the video and find it useful even though I didn't do much painting. Of course I could have finished the kit but I'd had enough. I have seen fantastic builds from this and other Kinetic F-16's, but for me it wasn't mojoing my mojo :( The model stand is available on my website www.theinnernerd.com and is completely made by me. The money made from it helps support the channel and keep the videos rolling, maybe even full-time one day… lets see.

Can I just say that it’s so refreshing to see a guy like you actually show a failure. Most others would have palmed it off or made some excuse when you showed us a situation that everyone of us has been in! I’ve never seen this AT ALL on RU-vid till last night. Agreed. So far Inner Nerd hasn’t been the ‘look at me how good I am’ modeller (although he is) and been down-to-earth with his builds. It’s refreshing to see him do on a video what some of us actually do with a rotten kit in private. Me included.

Thank you. I know this is a kit many have been eager to see so I wanted to show how far I got no matter how far, or not, I got. You've rightly said we've all been there and I'm sure I'll be back here again with another kit as some point. The Inner Nerd is my modelling journey, it needs to be relatable and with each model we learn something new and something not to do next time. As long as the next model is better in some way than the last we're heading in the right direction! I hope it goes well, it's definitely time to crack it out... and then then give the airbrush a go. Thanks for watching :)

the very first seconds of the video reminded me the situation when I threw out my Su-32FN model right out of my window from 5-th floor of my condo 20 years ago... but in my case - i wasn't happy with the way how I filed down the place around the canopy, so the canopy itself was not more adjusting to that place... anyway, I kind of felt the moral relief at that moment)))

If you leave decals in the water before they release from the backing, you risk washing or diluting the adhesive off the marking. Dipping the decal in warm water and then laying it aside on a dish or aluminum paint pallet allows the adhesive to release without the risk of dilution and, ultimately, curling

Built 2 of them at the same time. Only issue I had was the landing gear on one and the canopy fit. Both Israeli F16's look great. I've got a 3rd one in an Italeri boxing and are looking forward to building it. My next models are an Academy Mig29 and GWH Mig 29 together. Always up for a challenge. Sometimes perfectly fitting kits can be boring so Im happy to have my expertise tested.

I had a Kinetic 1/48 EA6B. Had issues straight out the box. To start the fuselage halves were off. Emailed kinetic who sent me another set of fuselage halves which were exactly the same (shorter one side at the rear). I worked around this and had the same issues where the seats wouldn't fit in the cockpit tub, so i bought aftermarket seats. The folded wing wouldn't join together precisely so I used plastic card to fill the areas with a gap. I ended up throwing the kit at the point the decal disintegrated when I took out out the water. However, I did build a Kinetic E2C Hawkeye which went okay, despite still having a few problems. I love their subject choices but generally I've had bad experiences with their fitment.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 2 года назад
Ahh damn, I have one of those on order... When you go to model it should be a pleasant experience. I understand this won't happen all the time, but literally every time I came to do this one I got a tiny bit further, like treating water. Sounds like you've had the same experience. It's a shame because you rightly say that they have a good choice and some kits are worth getting just because of the box art. There are a few gems thought I agree, especially their gold standard ones. Thanks for watching :)

Made the right call to stop and throw it away. I've been there but never had to quit, my time is limited so I do basic builds rather than super detailed work and I can live with a seamline shoiwng and a pin mark burried inside the cockpit or wheel well, in fact I can live with a lot more than that. 90% of the stuff that stresses me out when painting a model for example never even matters once done, I put it in my display stand next to the rest and move on, whenever I look at it at just look at it from a distance, enjoying the full view. Funny how it works. Then again I am not making RU-vid videos of my builds and can have my fun like that. In the end, I enjoyed watching the video as much as any finished build, or actually a lot more due to the intrigue involved!

I had the same issue with the nose. I kept the original kit radome part and packed out the two adjacent parts from behind with evergreen plastic card. That removed the step in the bottom fuselage. I'm building an Kinetic F-16A (ADF). The tail for this version had a massive sink mark in the tail base, requiring me to break the tail off the model to fix the errors. I recommend anyone looking at building this Kinetic F-16D kit to try and try and crosskit it with a Tamiya 1/48 F-16C Block 25/32 or 30/42 kit. Then using all the extra leftover parts like the main wheels, heavyweight landing gear and pylons, all of which a vastly superior components. To fix this kit you just need to bust out some Humbrol or Tamiya grey putty, fill up the gaps in the nose and sand it smooth. Anyone who's built an old Matchbox or Airfix kit will know where I'm coming from. Install the landing gear up position and finish the kit so it can be hung and displayed from the ceiling. It's a good chance to use up the decals you weren't planning to use and get some painting practice. But defiantly don't chuck the kit in the bin yet !!!

I wouldn't even have gone as far as you did with such bad fit problems. This is especially true when there are other better quality of the subject. Yes I understand the whole "we are modelers thing". However, isn't better spending our limited time building kits that are enjoyable to build and that we can actually finish in a decent amount of time? In turn this would allow us to continue building other kits. Anyway, great video and thank you for being sharing that getting frustrated and quitting on a kit is okay.

Thank you for watching :) I completely agree and building should be fun. Some people get kicks from making an almost impossible to assemble kit, but not me. There is too much pressure to complete everything we start, its a hobby after all. Best of luck with your future builds and thanks for sharing with me your frustrations. Onto better kits!

please explain something: when you call out psi on your airbrush, is that a preset setting on a better compressor? or are you just watching the gauge?
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd Год назад
No this is on the pressure gauge of the compressor. Best way to set it is fill the compressor, press the air feed on the airbrush and then set the gauge when the air feed is settled. There is always a small drop in pressure as you first start the feed on the brush so set the gauge once it is constant.

Back in the old days, there were no aftermarket details, no computers, no awesome details built in. We had to scratchbuild (no 3d printing nonsense) re scribe panels, etc., etc. They didn't just fall together the way they do now. With all the money, tools, and supplies you obviously have, what you really need is more skill and patience.

I think the real issue is that you spend a fair amount of money for some of these new kits, and for the price you pay, you (rightfully) expect a very nicely molded and engineered kit. Not perfect (nothing is), but high quality. You can expect fit issues on older kits, especially more current reissues of said kits, but in these higher priced modern kits, to me it's inexcusable.

Well it's a good job we moved on from the good old days or we'd still be living in caves... When you build for fun and the kit is only offering frustration and annoyance, I call it a day. As I said at the end of the video, I understand there is modelling in modelling and shaking the box and it's made isn't much fun either. But I genuinely didn't want to go and do any modelling because of this one. This isn't about patience or skill, this is about enjoying. I've built more complicated kits than this before, I've built worse fitting kits than this before, but I enjoyed that challenge. This I did not, so it didn't get finished. I have one of the F-16 MLU kits, which has languished on the shelf half built due to issues like this. The sprue gates issue is by far and away the biggest, to the point where for example the kit exhaust nozzle was unusable as you remove all the moulded details with the sprue gates. To make matters worse, the aftermarket nozzle 'specifically designed' for the Kinetic kit was a different size so was equally unusable, despite being a nice piece of resin in its own right. The other frustration with this kit was the really variable kit fit quality, as seen in this review. Sometimes it was jaw droppinly good, and then other times it was 1970's Frog kit bad. Considering the recent offerings by the likes of Zvezda, Meng, Eduard, Kinetic will only ever get my custom in the future if it is a subect that no other manufacturer does

Congratulations on your Fitter: At least that one did not get to you... The only insurmountable joint I ever encountered was on a (with AM) $500 Tamiya kit: The new tool 1:350 Yamato's vertical hull joint. Expensive landfill just because of that one horrible joint... None of the joints I saw here seemed as bad. To me worst kit means worst in accuracy. If you anticipate, joint issues are usually less severe than accuracy issues. Worst kit in accuracy was, among others, the 1/48th Hasegawa Me-109F/G series. The first version Eduard FW-190A/Fs of 2008. Above that the old Monograms B-24s and B-29s, and another pricy one, the Hasegawa Nagato because of its lower rear hull. Fit issues are really not that bad compared to kit bashing different brands to try to get some accuracy... In 1/48 that means adapting a Hasegawa FW-190A-5/8 cowl to a new tool Eduard, which I did twice. I am always amazed aircraft modellers will inevitably stick to one box, no matter what's in it. Kitbashing hardly even exists in aircraft modelling, while in armor that is half of all builds. Aircraft builders are extremely kit bashing shy just from the nature of the models...

I got ALL the extras, even custom cut and adjusted the intake lips and internal intake variable ramps adjustments for "in flight" mode. I dropped almost $200 usd on this kit, halfway through i very much wanted to take it outside and kick it across the field why i didnt? 1. Bc im a huge mig-25 fan 2. Bc i had every intention hyper realism on one 3 well, the aforementioned $200. Well icm had other ideas, there were gaps and ridges on EVERY major piece, the intakes and nose didnt align on the inner brace, every piece like yours needed some sort of adjustment or cleaning, parts were pictured in the assembly wrong on not explained, just lines poont ing to a blind side of the piece, so i had to use reference pics just to see where certain parts were supposed to actually get placed. Absolute nightmare. I had to literally force myself through that one, it took me 1 year and 3 months.
