Polonaise-fantaisie in A-flat major, Op. 61, is a composition for piano by Frédéric Chopin. It was dedicated to Mme A. Veyret, written and published in 1846.
This work was slow to gain favour with musicians, due to its harmonic complexity and intricate form. Arthur Hedley was one of the first critics to speak positively of the work, writing in 1947 that it 'works on the hearer's imagination with a power of suggestion equaled only by the F minor Fantasy or the fourth Ballade', although Arthur Rubinstein, Leff Pouishnoff, Claudio Arrau and Vladimir Horowitz had been including it in their programs some decades earlier.
It is intimately indebted to the polonaise for its metre, much of its rhythm, and some of its melodic character, but the fantaisie is the operative formal paradigm, and Chopin is said to have referred initially to the piece only as a Fantasy. Parallels with the Fantaisie in F minor include the work's overall tonality, A-flat, the key of its slower middle section, B major, and the motive of the descending fourth.

From my own program notes for Chopin CD: "One of the best pieces of advice I received as a young student , at the master class with a celebrated music teacher, was "Don't ever play Chopin like he is just about to die from tuberculosis". I was startled by this phrase as a child. Only to begin understanding many levels of it later. Firstly, it's true, that we, educated listeners, as we fancy ourselves to be, we apply our minuscule knowledge to the infinite, blurring the line between the mere human and the creator, the Artist. We think of Chopin's life being cut tragically short by the disease, and we wonder "if". If he lived and composed longer , what could have he achieved, how his music would evolve. On the other hand, his lifespan objectively wasn't that unusually short for the times, and even his poor health wasn't looked upon as something out of the ordinary. Beethoven had it much worse. Yet we would never think of applying his physical sufferings to his music. Neither would he. And neither would Chopin. I think, Liszt, in his famous and, on many instances, wondrous, essay "The Life of Chopin" has given us somewhat a biased opinion on composer's life and art. His contempt to Chopin's late works ( such as Polonaise-Fantasy, which he calls outright sickly and unworthy of the great artist) probably had more to do with Liszt himself. When he published "Chopin" in 1852, his own visionary works of the late period were still ahead. His time didn't come yet. He couldn't at that time grasp the greatness of the mind and soul voluntarily ceasing its titanic struggle and making peace with the world - and with itself. (I am a bit of a fatalist on this matter: just too many "God-given" examples : Raphael vs Michelangelo, Mozart vs Haydn, Lipatti vs Horowitz, and on, and on....)Liszt assumed, and led us to believe, that it was Chopin's mortal illness and premonition of his death that colored his later works. He was, of course, partial to "heroic" Chopin of Revolutionary Etude, Funeral march and "Military" polonaises. But while Liszt's own path led him from passionarity of his youth to ardent Catholicism, Chopin was decidedly different - and, perhaps an incomprehensible enigma to Liszt. Two man couldn't be more different on this matter. Liszt admits, that nobody really knew or saw any manifestations of Chopin's religious beliefs. Granted, it's coming from a future Abbe Liszt, and he himself spent pages assuring the readers of Chopin following all the customs and rites of proper Catholicism before his passing. But Chopin music, tells us, perhaps, a different story. There are few, if any, moments in his music, that can be with a degree of certainty qualified as manifestly Christian. And even when the prayer happens, like in the austere chorale of middle part of Fantasy F minor, or a more militant version of same in Scherzo #3, it's a prayer raised on behalf of others, not for oneself. And coming back to much maligned by Liszt Polonaise-Fantasy, the middle part of this visionary penultimate work, which rises to rival late Sonatas of Beethoven - this middle part is not a depiction of heaven with prerequisite angels and puffy clouds, but of the eternity, eternal rest, eternal sleep, eternal peace. Nirvana. I will say a strange thing, but we, in our 21st century age of internet, perhaps have a chance on better understanding of Chopin, than Liszt ever did, or even our predecessors music lovers of earlier generations. Romanticism, in its eternal stand of the individual vs society, the hero vs fate, is something we can relate to, in our society and times where we increasingly feel alone, helpless, alienated and even radicalized. But what's more, we are free to assume - in our imagination, of course - any identity we choose and fancy. We can have avatars, we can live our dreamed lives not in dreams, but in virtual reality. This is a distinct advantage over, say, a person living in mid-20th century, where having an imaginary other self would be considered eccentric - or worse. If we look upon Romantic art - we see the creators living as their own avatars in their works: Lord Byron as Harold or Don Juan, Chopin's soulmate Georges Sand - as Consuelo or Lucretia. Chopin created his own unique universe in music. More so, he, like his fellow countrymen Adam Mickiewicz, brought to life and glory the country that at that time tragically ceased to exist on world's political map, his motherland. Poland. If we think of him writing himself a role in each Ballade, Scherzo, Sonata - it's becomes far easier to comprehend both his music and his life. He was able to transcend his physical weakness and become a hero, nay, a superhero - as we say it nowadays, battling and saving wether his country or a beautiful maiden -or die trying. In this sense his works are indeed autobiographic...
