LIDA
Spento un fallace annunzio
Ti disse in aspra guerra...
Mancava il padre... ed orfana
Io rimaneva in terra;
Ei fra gli estremi aneliti
Formò le mie ritorte...
Peso la vita, il talamo
Letto mi fu di morte!
Mai sopportato un'anima
Più della mia non ha!
ARRIGO (in tono di
virulenta ironia)
Quanto la nuova infausta
Di mia caduta, oh! quanto
All'alma tua sensibile
Lutto costava e pianto!
Alta n'è prova il subito Imene!
LIDA (singhiozzando) Arrigo...
ARRIGO E fede n’ebbi da te, rammentalo...
Che dell'Eterno al piede
Il difensor d'Italia
Raggiungeresti, ov'esso
Per Lei cadrebbe!
LIDA (coprendosi il volto d'ambo le mani)
Ahi, misera!
ARRIGO Parla... rispondi adesso...
Scolpar ti puoi?... Rispondimi.
LIDA (volgendo gli occhi al cielo,
con fremito angoscioso)
Padre!
ARRIGO Lo stil de' rei,
Ecco! In altrui ritorcere
Le proprie colpe!
LIDA Ah! sei tremendo, inesorabile
Più del mio fato ancor!
ARRIGO (in atto d'allontanarsi) Spergiura!
LIDA M’odi!
ARRIGO (nel colmo dell'ira)
Va... tu mi desti orror!
T'amai, t'amai qual angelo,
Or qual demon t'aborro!
Per me la vita è orribile...
Nel campo a morte io corro...
In tua difesa, o patria,
Cadrò squarciato il seno...
Fia benedetto almeno
Il sangue mio da te!
LIDA A così lungo strazio
Regger può dunque un core?...
No, non è ver che uccidono
Gli eccessi del dolore;
Son rea... son rea... puniscimi...
Quel ferro in sen mi scenda...
D'un'esistenza orrenda
Meglio è spirarti al piè!
(Arrigo la respinge ed esce velocemente:
ella si allontana nella più viva desolazione.)
