This seems like the worst period. Even the market are now very unpredictable. Started investing recently when the market prices were a bit high, today I am more than 60% down!

Don't be confuse buying the dip in a bear market, with guaranteed future returns. Just because that company is down 60% + from ATH does NOT make it a sound long-term investment. Make sure you're investing in great companies. kudos to Sylvia nicolas.

Watching this video, it seems to me that Jean isn't retired in the more traditional sense, but has instead significantly restructured her life to focus on the priorities most important to her. Only regret is not retiring sooner. Im from the US and I wish I would have escaped sooner. Now I have time to do whatever I want whenever I want and I LOVE life . I like to people watch now that I have more time. One thing I have noticed is that the body language and facial expressions of people I see show that most people are not happy or relaxed in this country. Always mentally occupied or distracted with their cell phone or some other triviality..the American busy disease I call it and the need to show others that you are important enough to be noticed..mainly by acting and looking busy. To all the young people out there (Im 56) save, live WAY below your means and SAVE SAVE SAVE so you can escape this economic trap. Life truly is good when you have your own time and some financial security.

Retired a year already. Didn’t do anything except learning to swim (and lost 25lb in the process) and continue singing with a barbershop chorus (swimming improves my singing so much). I have a craft room full of paint, paper, jewelry making stuff, quilting stuff, crochet and knitting everything, and loads of cross stitching and embroidery to do. I feel ready to tackle my craft room.

I loved reading this reply, in the last 1-1.5 years I've taken up cross stitching and love it so much. I just wish it was possible to make it into a side hustle but I don't think it's viable since it takes so long to do even a small piece that I'm not sure anyone would actually pay someone that much given all the hours it takes.. Have you ever tried to earn a side income from it?

I never thought to do side hustle with any craft I took up. Too many great creations out there already by those who can do them justice. I just enjoy completing what I happened to tackle without putting it aside (judging by the stash of abandoned projects lol). I have several large cross stitching kits. I hope to complete them before my eyes or fingers give out. Cross stitching takes concentration, more than typical embroidery. I had to undo loads because one or two stitches were facing wrong direction 😂

Got unexpectedly retired a little early last august… I got ideas and goals and all of that, but am having trouble making the transitions. It’s not a horrible time or anything… but nothing was set up, so now I find myself setting up on the fly. At the same time we have fallen into this recession, it does make a mess of things. It’s kind of like I can see next month but am having trouble muddling through this week. I did enjoy this video. Thank you. Tgere was some solid advice in there. Hey painter662! I can totally relate. After all, it took me 10 years to muddle my way thru life into my current retirement in Bali. Yep the current recession is a bit jarring, but I dunno how old you are, but i have lived through & remember clearly the atmosphere of the 1998, 2008 and 2014 crisises that affected me personally. We'll get thru each of them as they come hopefully, with some sensible maneuvering. Take your time transitioning - savour the process (later on you'll realise that was part of the life you lived!) - and you'll figure it out eventually - we all do. All the best :)

for most of us privileged enough to be born and educated and work in developed countries, we'll always be ok, especially if we start taking advantage of stuff like geo arbitrage. Be hopeful, dream big. Think about Ke Huy Quan who started his journey in a migrant boat and ended up on stage at the Oscars! We can certainly figure things out slowly but surely :)

Thanks for the advice, you guys are awesome 🌞 we have been retired for 2 years on an Aussie island, thanks to 5 rental properties, now 50, we still do a few hours of work, but we decide how much, we're involved in lots of groups and hobbies, it does get pretty busy in semi retirement. Loving island life 😊

I actually enjoy being a landlord and taking care of the tenants and solving whatever issues crop up, even though now we mostly just do it remotely which is more difficult. Retired for 12+ years (from FIRE as well); Wife and I have developed a daily routine that works for us and we always enjoy our time together. Spot on vid about pursuing hobbies/crafts/alt-businesses in retirement... ...I chose Airsoft as a Hobby (granted it already was; I just took it to the next level, i.e. "focus on the details" as you say). She Yoga/Pilates/Zumba/Cooking(Chef level).

Hi Jean! Thanks for the excellent content, as always. Your concept of 4 currencies (money, time, youth, health) is brilliant. One could argue youth is a derivative of time but I can see well why you may want this as a separate category. I can also think of communication (in broad sense - with family, relatives, friends, strangers, nature) as additional currency. Communication (=time spent) with certain individuals is an energy boost and goes beyond just time since you're emotionally rewarded with a multiplier. On the contrary, communication with other people/situations (very personal) is an energy drain and to be avoided.

Yes Time and youth sound similar at first blush but actually youth is quite an irreplaceable currency w its own distinct features of energy, health and spirit of adventure which distinguishes it from having loads of time in say old age. I also agree with your point about communication! U must be an introvert like us haha. The extroverts of the world never seem to care about having their energy drained from social interactions!

Retired at 28 is amazing and especially if you’re investing in real estate which is hard to get to a point where you’re able to retire with only approximately 6 years out of college. I know a few families that inherited a lot of real estate from their parents who purchased it in the golden era of the 70s and 80s before Reganomics and it’s accelerated inflation. They successfull families held onto it and now the benefits are generational. Friends of ours inherited a 20 unit apartment building in San Francisco and they are collecting around 4k a month for each one and they clear 50k a month net. There’s a lot of people retiring in these situations.

Yep retired 1.5 years ago and isolation/people not understanding your decision/envy and waiting for me to fail and go back to work means that I have even less interest in reaching out to others. This causes me even greater isolation. Not really sure how to deal with this, and not really interested to put myself out their either. It's probably a really bad approach however at the same time I'm not really caring about others opinions because its my life, not theirs.

That's a wonderful attitude to carry - enjoying the journey as well as the destination means you're just living life to the fullest in the present - which is so important. N yes, there's actually a lot to learn even in retirement, particuarly about thinking how to keep the retirement plans problem-proofed and hedging risks. Good point. We always need to struggle in between this 4 currency - money / time / youth / health. It's seem difficult to have all this 4 at once unless we are born rich. By the time we may have enough money, we may not have the energy and youth to do what we can when we are younger. But when we are young, out younger self is still struggling making money and not be able to do the stuff that we want. Hopefully by the time I retire, I still have the energy and money to do all the activities I wanted. Thanks for your video and sharing.

I'm 22 so bit early for retirement. reason i watched this was because i wanted someone's experience on doing their own thing, managing their time and money, things you realized after the switch in life style. I'm going to work hard to live life because i believe i realized from a young age that life is going to go by faster and faster so want to experience meaningful things (this might just be youth rushing 😅)

I spent my youth completely living in the moment - and whilst it was great in one sense i was far less prepared for later when the reality of a career that i didn't like started to hit home. Jobs & careers can be great and awesome and we learn lots from them but for me the more important things in life lay outside of that arena! all the best!

We are also free ‘retired humans. I’ve noticed that even if you do FIRE, you’ll always be managing money, time, possessions etc. We live a simple nomadic life travelling Europe in our camper and get to experience a same kind of life, without having to grind really hard to get to FIRE. We earn some money online, and try to invest some. ❤

ooh Van life is still one of the things on my bucket list! getting a comfortably kitted out van in Europe is so expensive tho! can't get aroudn the fact that money does make most things in life go round... even if we're not working we still gotta spend time making sure the money we have can stretch till the end for us - the difficulty is not knowing where the end point lies lol

Not really retired but just unemployed for a few months after ending some contract jobs for 2 years since I graduated during Covid. Job market is bad right now. But the points you shared here are somewhat relatable especially on managing finances (emergency funds do run out eventually) and trying to learn skills/hobbies while being in control of your own time. I see this period of time as an opportunity to discover more about myself and to plan out my future goals for the life I desire.

I actually think the break periods in between jobs are great practice periods for training for retirement - assuming there's like months of time in between. When i used to take breaks in between jobs, i usually found myself super busy for at least a month or so - just tidying up odds n ends, catching up on reading, bitty stuff i finally have time to do etc.... n that's before getting started on actually exploring myself and time!

One common ground is that when one achieves financial independence, he/she has the option of retiring early. This is a valuable option for me. I think that this will allow one having the assurance of venturing into his/her interest without the burden of financial survival been secured for a significant amount of time. WTK

I think 'retirement' is one of those words that is a bit outdated in this modern digital world. Many people these days don't commit to just one organisation or one job. We have many interests and opportunities to do more than one thing for a living, and quitting a 'day job' or a 'full-time job' to do something else like you guys have been doing isn't so much a 'retirement' to me. It's more like a lifestyle change. You guys may have 'retired' from a traditional career, but you certainly haven't 'retired' from doing other things in life that may generate income. The difference is you don't 'have to' do what you don't want to do just for a living, perhaps that's the true definition of 'retirement' haha. Totally agree too about traveling when we're young. I tell my friends all the time not to wait til 'retirement'.

love the perspective totally agree - that's what i've been tryin to express in my videos - nicely put! Too many things in life we shouldn't wait till "retirement" - i'm bringing my folks to Iceland later this year but now my mom is experiencing knee pains and i'm so worried about her being able to travel and enjoy it. Health and youth are precious!

Apart from health, another thing that I've noticed is that the older I get, the 'less' enthusiasm I have than when I was younger. It's either because I've done a lot of it already, or it's just natural for us to want to feel a bit more grounded as we get older. The excitement is still there, but it's less. I've also noticed that the older I get, the more 'fear' has slowly developed in me. In my 20s and 30s, I never thought about danger or accidents, I just packed and went and whatever. But now I feel a little anxious whenever I fly haha. So yes, again, we can't waste our youth for sure!

I think i just get more used to being comfortable and less willing to step outside and explore - but when i do, i remember all that i've forgotten and why we do stuff like that. Yes I'm planning to vlog the Europe / Iceland trip w my folks - V won't be with me so i'll just have to make do by myself lol - but it'll be nice to document that. Havent travelled w my folks in years - looking forward to the family time!

You've hit upon many of my own concerns. I've got many rental units in the US, and don't see cash-flow as a problem. However, it'll be such a huge change from the familiar, and change from today (which is what I know and forces discipline) to retirement of total freedom, ability to travel the world 24-7, but arguably without a sense of purpose, is really scary. Venturing into the unknown .... tomorrow is closer than we think.

To people who say retirement is a myth, its because they dont know how and need to be spoonfed or told how to retire. So they say its a myth. Its a Choice. You need ability to retire. Working whole life exchanging your time for income also is a price to pay. Everyone is unique so there is no absolute right or wrong. If you enjoy work till death, do it. If you treasure enjoying limited life, do it. Value is different to different people. Some lack imagination so they say, retirement is boring. Some find retirement time enriching. So both are true because not all know how to retire.

it's very true - different strokes for different folks,, but i did see my own dad struggling for 2-3 years initially when he first entered retirement, and that's even despite the fact i bought him a book about preparing for retirement one year before it happened lol. We don't generally share our personal private info online due to safety concerns - but depending on how long u wanna be here for u can check out the B211 social visit visa - u can stay 6months and actually now renewal onshore without leaving Bali is possible so it means on the B211 u can be here for years without leaving until they remove the onshore renewal option. That might work good for you? U can try Bali Visas. This upcoming video this saturday will be good for you as a reference - its about Bali rents n car rentals n etc recent updates!

hi, no I don't actually I don't see them as a good investment and I dont plan to live in SG so i never saw the point. Yes as non-citizens we are charged higher for medical here but if you are on kitas you get kitas price which is still pretty affordable. Yes we plan on staying here long term provided no external disruptions, we are surfers and hope to surf into our old age.

Hey Jean. Really enjoy your videos. I do find the use of the word ‘retirement’ an interesting one. Historically, this means stopping working and having more time for things you want to do without having someone else control your time (as you note). Retirement is becoming a lie. We call ourselves retired but keep side hustles? For many, “retired” means we quit a less pleasant job to do something else that generates income. Inflation is too high even for full time wage earners to keep up. So anyone on a fixed income is screwed. The solution is aggressive investing.

i think of keeping busy in retirement as less of an income generating exercise and more of a "staving away the dementia and living life to the fullest" exercise. I'm not sure about aggressive investing. We prefer lean FIRE for the reason that there's less pressure to keep up with a lavish lifestyle so makes things simpler overall. But i suppose FAT FIRE advocates wd be on your page :)

Please stop misuing the term retirement to describe your alternative, working lifestyle Jean. All you have really done is exchange a traditional job in a high income, high living cost society, for a job as a content creator in a low cost developing country that enables your current lifestyle as a low paid digital nomad. Your new "job" and expat lifestyle may be more satisfying and rewarding for you but requires you to work to sustain it. Time to stop pretending your retired, if you need to work to survive financially in Bali, given how relatively less expensive it is to live there, you're definitely not retired. Digital nomads are not retirees.

Hi! I don't understand why you think we need the youtube income to survive financially in Bali. This was always clear from my earlier videos that we don't. In fact, when we first moved to Bali to start our retirement our channel was nothing and certainly not a financial pillar we counted on to sustain us here. I make videos cinsistently cos it's been a commitment from the start when we started the channel - and i still enjoy keeping to this commitment generally more or less. In fact since this year we've been cutting back to 3 videos a month roughly and turning down most sponsorship offers - just cos we can and V wants to do more other stuff. Why is it that when you know nothing about us, that you insist that your interpretation of what our live is, is in fact the accurate version? There's no one on earth who will look at the way we really live here who's gonna say we're still holding a job. That's just pathetic. If our videos annoy you so much, please simply unsubscribe and go away. That's for your own mental peace, not mine. If this is meant to be an honest discussion about what retirement is really like nowadays, then please, if your entire premise is based off the fact that "we need YT income to survive in Bali", that's categorically inaccurate. We're doing plenty fine from our investments. So... what next?

Perhaps not a traditional job, but you clearly recognize that your lifestyle requires funding and by all outward appearances you seem to use YT (via sponsorships) as a source of income. If not required for income support and just a hobby or creative outlet, why solicit sponsorships? My point was to simply state that, unless you are relying totally on passive income to support your lifestyle, you're working in some capacity. If you are truly "retired" and not working for money in some capacity out of necessity then great, but you don't create that impression. Most can only afford to semi-retire these days, that is work part time in some capacity. Your vid's on the whole don't "annoy" me, I actually like and appreciate the majority of your content. I just don't share your idyllic view of Bali as a retirement destination or totally agree with your themes around being "Retired" and quiting your job to "change your life". Few can do this and mostly enjoy this privilege due to coming from wealthy developed countries as you have.

I believe they rent. One school of thought is to own real estate in your home country and rent in the country you choose to retire in. Local land ownership laws can be complex and some people have ended up losing their investment.

@@mcb00m I think that's a great way to do it for sure and is what I currently do but the reality of not having security is also a challenge as well as finding good rental accommodation and hedging against an area shooting up in values pricing you out. In Bali specifically you are able to lease land for 25 years and I wondered if this had appeal to Jean as a half way house between security and keeping it relatively small in terms of capital outlay.

Hi, yes we rent currently and we own real estate in our own home countries yes. Its safer and commands a decent ROI plus capital appreciation. We're looking at some land investments here... but like @marcboomgaard mentioned there's always risks so we're still weighing things up.
