As being a composer and pianist, I know the difficulties of playing that soft. Without one single note being too loud in this holy composition, her playing is wonderful.
This is a Hamburg Steinway, they already sound much softer and warm than their American counterparts. I Believe she is also playing with una corda for a most of the piece but that is fine of course if that creates the desired sound as otherwise it is nearly impossible to get this sound on a Steinway. Bösendorfers would be able to make it sound this way without using the una corda pedal at all.
She makes you feel her pasion, she is very stunning player, you can hear the piano cry In every single note she plays; what a gift to be able to listen to her performance. Exceptionally gifted pianist.
I come back to this rendition again and again and it is hard to describe how absolutely other-worldly and soothing it is. Khatia Buniatishvili's pianissimo is the epitome of grace, masterful control and delivery. Just amazing!!
I wouldn't say “amazing”, as her interpretation is beyond that. But I totally agree with your comment. Her contrasts convey both Liszt and Schubert in their respective unfathomable and so touching depths. Having infinitely appreciated the interpretations of her predecessors, only males in fact, I think I'm discovering what femininity she brings to the performance and habitat of this work (to date, I haven't found any other performances by illustrious female pianists). I'd like to have your point of view on this subject, which comes to me only today and may, of course, be dictated to me by my inherited masculine reflexes. (Don't worry if you don't answer me ;) But this kind of exchange seems to me worthy of what Kathia delivers)
It's 3 am 29/01/2023 Auckland, New Zealand and we have just had a 1 in 500 year biblical downpour over last 10 hrs. My garage and property badly flooded & damaged... watching a garage with 2 beautiful old cars flooded... i'm heart--broken and on my 3rd whiskey after all this..... but... I'm listening to Khatia playing this and strangely, I feel at peace after all this ... I'm crying into my whiskey, but this beautiful interpretation helps me go on. What a gift 😊. I'm not religious, but his gives me strength face tomorrow - whatever that may bring... (there is more bad weather forecast)
I pity Aucklanders It seams as if the city is going through Hell because of all the problems you folk have to endure, If it is not the bus and train service, it is the storms and water or electricity problems, all of New Zealand is praying for you because you are regarded as the driving force of the country. so remember we in Southern Waikato are supporting you. Enjoy the whiskeys. Regards from Kihikihi ,Te Awamutu.
Over 76 years, I've heard many artists and none compare to Ms. Buniatishvili . Listen to that touch ... Her technical skills are outstanding and her memory is unsurpassed , but it is her making love to those ivories that separates her from all the others. Khatia's Mother got her daughters started in piano and the rest is history. I listen to her music whenever I get a chance. Thank You, Khatia.
Bob, couldn't have said it better! She's simply AMAZING...a brilliant talent! Simply an outstanding concert pianist!! ...One of a kind, that's for sure!!
I’m so disappointed by the disrespect of the audience, especially because it’s such a beautiful performance and I hate being distract from noises..... I love this version..... I love the interpretation, the soft touch.... it brings me completely in another dimension, which is what it should be. I’m amused
are you serious? the music dominates and transcends everything. i am transformed. i never heard anything so beautiful. then i looked up the meaning of the song and then i understood why i was crying.
I'm a singer songwriter and a piano and singing teacher and absolutely love this rendition. Not many concert pianists can play with so much emotion and more impressively focus, as some members of the audience are clearly not appreciating her amazing talents.
I met her Friday night after her concert. She is wonderful with people, kind and affectionate. Truly a lovely person. So comforting to see and experience.
Those high notes she hits starting at about 3:50 are amazing. So Soft but penetrating and sustained. Voiced perfectly against the bass chords. And she hits some notes in the bass that are so warm it’s like a sweater on a chill autumn day.
This is the most beautiful interpretation of Schubert/Liszt's "Ständchen" I've ever heard. She goes deep inside Schubert's notes looking for the quintessential moment of his creation. It would be great to hear this performance of Buniatishvili without the inappropriate noise in the background.
Not only is she absolutely the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen but her talent in playing this piece left me speechless with a lump in my throat. Brilliant!!!!!
Beautiful interpretation of this transcription. Her pulse is accurate and mature. Her touch is delicate and sublime. No unnecessary gestures. She focuses all her energies on the music. Her melody sings straight from the heart. Her posture is elegant. Her breathing deep and coordinated. Her dress, within the limits of decency and good taste. And her exotic feminine beauty makes the experience even more delightful. Bravo!
It makes me so melancholy listening to this. It's the haunting swansong of a European culture running through our fingers like sand. The incredible talent of the pianist is all the more poignant. Multilingual and cultured. The European ideal.
@@vikoroller8446 it is not difficult (at least not in this peace), it just isnt everyone that sees it fit to do it. It would be weird if everyone did it.
David Dsouza, I can't stop listening to it either! Often several times each occasion. It's been eight months since I first came across it, and I must have listened to it dozens of times if not hundreds!
If I was young, if I was rich I would be there seated at the first range listening to your beautiful music. That's my dream but thank God I have my ipad,
Out des doigts
BREATHTAKING! Literally held my breathe for most of it 😂 Khatia is my favourite ever. Love all her work. She plays every piece as though her favourite, is so IN the music, she becomes it. Always includes her orchestra and conductor. Just pure mastery. So young too! ❤❤❤
That was seriously moving. I have been listening to Horowitz interpretations recently, I thought that was beautiful, this easily surpassed that. I love Horowitz but the tempo Khatia plays this in is perfect for this. Goosebumps through out the piece. Her technique looks like that of 60 years old experienced player. Her fingers not wasting any energy just making the right movement and nothing else.
Incredible. I listen to other very good other interpretations, but when I come back on this one, each time something strange is happening, air is vibrating, and my soul too.
Khatia's performance is a big event! The world stops and a miracle happens! My ears can't stop listening to her lead the melody and follow Khatia, she has amazing hearing! Absolute delight for my ears!
Every month or so, I drop by here to listen to this. The way she plays this is mesmerizing. Just takes me right up into the air. Her new CD, "Labyrinth", is on youtube also. What I've listened to so far, is wonderful! Can't wait until it comes out.
I could listen to that a thousand times and still love every second of it. And as for watching - just to see the barely stroking of the keys produce the beautiful sounds and to literally 'see' the music in Khatia's face. Thank you, lovely Khatia.
Khatia is simply outstanding in terms of performance and absolutely touching in terms of the emotion that goes into her playing of the piano. Thank you Khatia for bringing beauty to this troubled world
Never heard or seen anything like this before. Breathtaking in every way imaginable. I'm utterly stricken. The piano lives on in this new star. Sheer brilliance!
the breathing, swells impossible on a piano ,the elasticity of her line is remarkable. Pianos rarely sound like this! She is a master of the pedal already! The young crop coming out now have more color, tonal variety than Rubinstein or Ogdon etc could manage. Where did this phenomenal woman come from. Yuja ,she and a few others deserve their stardom!
I totally agree with you, John. She doesn't play piano; she caresses it. And also, she comes from Georgia, and I've heard her giving interviews in english, french and german.
John e martin III I think more recent generations of pianists are more demanding with instrument selection and the technical prep of the piano than former generations. Rubinstein and Horowitz frequently played pianos that sounded unprepared or mediocre. Glenn Gould and Krystian Zimerman are the only ones I know of from the 20th century who were particularly, (and famously) choosy about the piano they played.
Six and a half sublime minutes! Such beautiful music. Just... wow. I have never been able to listen to this piece just once each time. And I keep coming back, often.
Standchen and Liebestraum are perhaps the most beautiful interpretations of Khatia. She delivers these two pieces, one can feel, with heart and soul! Enjoy listening them over and over!.
Standchen ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SlTTgJau33Q.html and Liebestraum ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qH08xIe4e2I.html
An amazing performance. The lyrics of this song are so passionate and I feel most performers play it a bit stiff, but this was achingly beautiful and you could feel the intended emotional content pouring out of every note. I was absolutely mesmerized.
In a serenade, you see the moon over a misty sky and the reflection by the lakeside. In this piece, I am cast into a dream. Her airy touch on the keyboard is ethereal, the sound and experience otherworldly.

This is really a very beautiful piece of music & excellently played. Keeping the left hand so soft & in the background, while keeping the melody focused on the right hand, as well as insuring every single note has its individual perfect tone. Each note gently replies to the previous note, then politely urges the following note to carry the tune forward. Such a graceful performance.
One thing I just cannot understand, is that there could be even ONE person 'disliking' such beautiful interpretation. But there are actually several hundred of these!. The only possible answer that comes to mind is, that all these people, must simply interpret this piece, a lot better than Khatia! Only, nobody knows about them! Anyway. God bless you, Khatia!!
¡Exacto!
there is a lot of envy out there, envious of the music, envious of the beauty, envious of , well everything. these people are not happy people. there are plenty of those!
People can give thumbs down for reasons other than the performance. Many here have commented on the audience noise, maybe there are thumbs down for that. I personally am annoyed by the "artistic" camera work. What's with the closeup of her arm? To be clear I did not give a thumbs down, and almost never give any video a thumbs down.
I think this is the piano piece I used to listen to my grandmother play some 60 years ago, she got no teacher for piano but her two brothers did, and she basically learned from listening to them practice. So she told me. This was her most impressive piece. Then she played a lot of dance music that i have forgotten about. God bless her memory
Magnificent,Maravillosa,Bellissimo. She played this heavenly melody with delicacy, tenderness and sensitivity.
Liszt = List ,narodený Slovák v bývalom Uhorsku, hudobný génius ktorého si privlastňovali niektoré štáty, ale on zostal len obyčajným Slovákom, som na neho hrdý.
The people who criticize and cannot appreciate the sublime beauty of this performance are just bitter and twisted - probably failed musicians. Thank you Khatia Buniatishvili for your gift to us all.
MERCI.....
To be honest on occasions she infuriates me with her wild undisciplined and aggressive bashing, then on the other hand she can enchant an audience with with playing like this. An undoubtedly gifted young woman with bags of onstage charisma, nevertheless greater seriousness of purpose and restraint with much of the vast piano repertoire she pursues would be greatly welcomed. Sorry Khatia fans!.
Wonderful to hear this. There is so much junk around these days. We will never hear music created such as this in the future. The modern culture just does not have the ability to allow such music to grow; it is something special that we have this lovely lady, Katia, playing for us. That piano is special, too!
