In this video I'm comparing the experience of shooting with the DSLR F-Mount 24-70mm f/2.8E VR lens with the new Z-Mount 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens for a Nikon mirrorless Z6 or Z7.

I forgot to talk about the image stabilisation... I haven't done much testing, but I have to say the Z6's in-body stabiliser is really impressive. I've got quite sharp shots at 1 second with a 2/3 success rate! Also focus-by-wire using the manual focus ring is unresponsive and somewhat frustrating compared to a mechanically linked DSLR lens. Anyone else use a 24-70?

About the bag. I have never used the bags supplied with my F-mount lenses ... so I do not mind that they provide a cloth that can work as an extra protection for the lenses and cameras in your camera bag ...

I have the 24-70 f2,8 VR and the 70-200 f2,8 VRII for the Nikon D4. And for my Nikon Z i have the 50mm and 24mm f1,8 and they are bothe veeeery sharp! On the Z6 i Use only primes. And when i need the zoom i take the 24-70/70-200 F mount and the adapter for the Z6. They are sharp too! I will not Buy the new zooms, because they are to expensive when you habe the older one.

Cool comparison - I guessed you might be doing this! I know it doesn't quite fit in this comparison but the I reckon if you already have the 24-70mm f/2.8E and have a Z-camera, there's a really good argument for having the 24-70mm f/4 S rather than the f/2.8 S. Obviously the new one is a bit better optically, but it's so much smaller and lighter while still being pretty darn sharp. The CA isn't as perfectly controlled as with the new f/2.8 S lens, but it's a lot better than with the F-mount version... I had both the 24-70mm f/4 S and the 24-70mm f/2.8G for a while, but then sold the G lens because I just never used it on the Z7!

Hi Geoff, yeah I was thinking about getting the 24-70/4S, but I didn't want to end up with two 24-70 lenses. Also I really like the f/2.8 "look" and I'm a bit Lo-CA intolerant, so it didn't take much convincing that the 24-70E had to go.
@GeoffCooper
@GeoffCooper 5 лет назад
@@RobBlight fair enough - I didn't find myself using my previous 24-70mm f/2.8G much at f/2.8 anyway and the f/4 Z lens blows that away for image quality... If fact, probably the only 24-70 that beats it is the one you now have :)

Even the S 24-70 f4 is perhaps a slightly better lens than the F mouth lens at 2,8 with VR, not in all situations like land- or city scapes but like a all round lens. Have both, but it's just a feeling (no test).

My question is should I upgrade my f4 24-70 s to the f2.8 ? I’m not sure I get sufficient benefit to justify the cost. Also I get great results from my f4 24-70s with my z6
@RobBlight
@RobBlight 5 лет назад
If you're happy with your current lens and don't feel as if it's holding you back then keep using it. It's a lot of extra expense just for the f/2.8, and by all accounts the f/4 version is supposed to be very good.
@GeoffCooper
@GeoffCooper 5 лет назад
I also had this question when the f/2.8 S lens was released, but I've stayed with the f/4 S lens as it's so much smaller but is still very sharp. I used to also have the 24-70mm f/2.8G lens (used with the FTZ) but I sold it and don't miss it at all!

@@GeoffCooper One BIG advantage I noticed shooting low-light (normal, house interior) was that with the 24-70 f/4 the Z7 AF performance was very poor, but improved dramatically with the 24-70 f/2.8 G ED. (1 little f-stop doubles the amount of light!)

I see where I think the old lens seems to render light better to me . Overall the new 24-70 is better optically except in image rendering. The picture or image just looks more real if that makes sense. I never got the 24-70 e because I didn’t think it was a very good lens especially for the money . I do have the latest 70-200 e fl vr f/2.8 lens . I love it “sometimes “ but for the most part I think it’s a $3000 rip-off. Sorry to say this but Nikon quality went down hill with the e lenses. Folks like Sigma and Tamron are upping their game so much it’s way too hard to keep getting Brand name lenses if they are subpar. I have an old afs 80-200 d f/2.8 that hands down out performs in real world shooting. The e version is better in areas but if it’s missing focus in crucial moments like a wedding and the bride is coming down the isle “not good” . For us still using DSLRs and Nikon for the most part I don’t see myself getting the Nikon brand lens over third party. I do think Nikon is setting a new bar for image quality of for Nikon . But the new Nikon look is very clinical almost too perfect looking without character. Too contrasty without microcontrast. So the images look flat , ugly and boring. Look at the new Tamron 35mm f/1.4 wow beautiful images. How about the new Sigma 28 and 40mm lenses. These are pinnacle lenses of the modern era. They have precision and character built into their image quality. Nikon is building precision into their lenses but the images look lifeless, flat and dull. This is from a Nikon lens fan . I’ve been buying up old Nikkor/ Nippon lenses from the 1960’s,70’s and 80’s at the moment. What I’m seeing is flaws with character. Images that are not as sharp but have so much more detail in them . So I’ll wrap up my rants here . Thanks for a great review! Peace

@RobBlight
@RobBlight 5 лет назад
I can only speak from my own experience several years ago, but my 70-300 VC was soft at 300mm and had the AF motor fail within the first year, and the 24-70 VC was decentered and had image stabilisation problems at 1/80 sec. Nikon lenses do not have these problems very often. I don't own any Tamron lenses any more, so I can't test them on the Z6, sorry!

Hey did the call the Z lens and S lens? I’m really confused and you call the F lens an E lens? But your on a Nikon body? But you title says F compared to Z?
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS
@WOLFTICKVIDEOS 3 года назад
Well since no one has answered you I guess I will. The S and the E are letters that denote the series or model of the lens. The Z mount 24-70 is a S line of lenses which is supposed to be the more "professional" line of Z mount lenses. The 24-70 F2.8e lens is a F mount lens. So to sum it up Z and S are mirrorless, and F and E are DSLR. Hope this helps to clarify.

The 2.8 and 2.8 vr are flawed lenses that's a fact, apparently the z2.8 and even z4 versions are way ahead in every respect.
@RobBlight

I don't know if they are flawed - it just got easier to make a good 24-70/2.8 with the smaller flange distance on Z-mount.

I'm not sure I can comment on that, but there is often a small dip in value of the older version when a new lens comes out. In this case it's a bit different though as it's not the same system.

I use only primes one the Z, they are sharper and f1,8. And when i use a zoom, i take de "old" 24-70 VR on the Z6, is god enaught:)
@ElenaHanak
@ElenaHanak 5 лет назад
For me it looks like the old lens has more microcontrast... I don't have a new 24-70 S. I have an old 24-70/2.8 (not VR) and it is increadibly dimensioinal. It has a 3D wow-effect. Unfortunately, you don't test for dimensionality and microcontrast... So, I am convinced that my old 24-70 will be great on Z7 stabilised body :-) For me the new lens looks rather flat and boring ...
@RobBlight
@RobBlight 5 лет назад
Hi Elena. Yes the older lenses really are great. I have never seen a good definition/explanation/example of dimensionality or microcontrast, so I'm unable to test for them. I do think that the new lens is better optically, but the older lens definitely has more character in terms of bokeh, CA, flare, warm cast, etc.
@TimGeersProductions

@@RobBlight I never saw CA as a good 'character' to me the bokeh looks way more creamy on the new one meanwhile with bigger contrast, and still rendering incredibly
