After watching your video I bought 24-70 vr f mount version. A very little difference of sharpness hardly matter to me. The color renditions and the contrasts of f mount is still best in the business from last 13 years. Also the digitally corrected sharpness is inbuilt in z mount lenses. Mostly z are digitally enhanced which they still have to prove its durability and ruggedness.

I am glad you did this comparison. I had the 24-70 f2.8 VR (F) on my d800. I also had the 70-200 VR I, which seemed to the only copy that had no problems and was super sharp. When i was using the D800, i preferred the 70mm on the 70-200, then the 70mm on the 24-70 because i felt like the 24-70 2.8 vr wasn't as sharp. I mounted my D800 on a tripod, used a science textbook page and a metal ruler at 45° to dial in the autofocus. If it weren't for the 70-200 working so sharp, i would have thought the d800 was the problem. I sent in my (then bew) 24-70 f2.8 VR to Nikon and they re-adjusted focus, and while the images were great, i still wasn't entirely happy. I ended up having my 70-200 on my d800 (or the 50 1.8G) more than the 24-70 2.8 F-mount. I sold that f mount lens and the buyer couldnt stop telling me about how sharp it was... i then considered paying $$$ and sending in my d800 for service. I got the Z6II and Z7II (and now a Z8), and i have to say that i am not leaving the 24-702.8 S on the body all the time. Before i sold it, i did have the 24-70 f.28 VR F-mount on a FtZ adapter and i wasn't happy with: 1. The sharpness 2. The AF performance. I felt that lens mounted to FtZ was bit slower than native Z-lens. Anyway, i am glad as i thought i was crazy for disagreeing with folks who spoke about the 24-70 f2.8 VR being the next, "legendary" lens.

The 24~70 F mount was never one of Nikon's better lenses. Very useful and versatile but it was never that sharp. Also, I think it would be more useful if you used a proper chart as the subject. It illustrates lppmm (line pairs per millimeter) which is more useful in making judgements. And also show the image quality at the edges as well as the middle.

I've also noticed the 24-70/2.8 VR is a bit "meh" at 70mm, particularly at close range. I've been through 2 of them, the second was much better, but they both had it. Tbh the construction on the lens is a bit disappointing, when you turn the focus or zoom ring the image shifts up and down a bit, so there's some play in the mechanism. Thanks for the vid and good job with the testing!

Hi Ricci, thank you for this interesting video. But this result is to be expected: 1) the F-mount is an older lens and 2) the Z mount is far superior to the F mount. I would be interested in the Z mount comparison between the f2.8 and f4 lenses. Also, even with the "bad" results of the F mount lens, no one will ever notice that unless you really print huge (and I mean huge) prints.

Those are really startling differences. The only thing I wonder about is that these were at relatively close range. How different are the lenses once you start getting out towards infinity - landscape rather than portrait distances?
@dblissmn
@dblissmn 3 года назад
Bear in mind these are all close focus tests. At infinity there's not a lot in it between these two lenses though the Z-mount still has a slight advantage. At close focus the Z mount lens wins quite decisively as you see here, mainly toward the long end of the range. This is different from the older 24-70G lens for the F-mount, which rather butchers the corners compared to the 24-70E at the wide end of the range but holds up better in the center toward close focus.

Ricci, thanks so much for all the work you put into these great videos. Forgive the OCD, but is there a focussing issue with your F-Mount lens? It appears that the focus point is changing between shots, giving the illusion of poorer quality of the F-mount lens. In the F-Mount lens shots only (24mm), look at the sharpness of the BKT button, f4 is sharper than f5.6. Also at f2.8 the focus point is behind the "850" text. The focus distance is revealed in the texture on the prism, top left corner of the 1:1 shots I think the F-mount lens could actually be closer in performance than these shots reveal. Would love to get more input about this.

This is a very interesting video; thank you. I wonder whether the results would be similar if the object being photographed was at, say, 20 feet and at infinity. (It is interesting to note that the calculated MTFs are quite similar for the two lenses, which may indicate that their performance at infinity would Lso be similar.) I look forward to your forthcoming videos.

Thanks for another great video! I have this lens on order - hope it shows up soon. In my experience over many years and many F-mount bodies, my “Holy Trinity” 24-70mm f/2.8 has been the least sharp Nikkor lens I’ve ever owned. Even with AF fine tuning, I’ve never been able to achieve super sharp images like I could with other pro lenses. Thus, your results appear to be in-line with my experience. I’ve done a lot of head-head comparisons with my D850 and my Z6 using more or less equivalent lenses for what’s available, such as the 35 or 50mm f/1.8 Z vs. the 35 or 50mm f/1.4G lenses on their respective bodies. Even with just a Z6, the Z lenses out perform the D850 with the F-mounts. To be sure, these primes are very close in performance, but the Z glass just seems slightly sharper regardless of f-stop, subject, light, etc. Really wish Nikon was more like Canon in terms of releasing the full set of Z mount lenses out of the gate. I look forward to your f/2.8 to f/4.0 head to head, and to the firmware update to improve the Z body focusing capability among other things.

I have a similar experience to yours, seeing results from my Z6 with the 24-70 f/4 and comparing old photos with my D800 24-120 f/4, and the Z6 outperforms the D800 despite it having less resolution. The reason being the 24-70 f/4 z glass is sharp at all focus distances and edge to edge, whereas the 24-120 f/4 VR was soft at the edges.

How about performance at different distances? The 24-70VR F-mount is known to be better corrected for distance than close-up--something that I think took some upgraders from the 24-70G F-mount on the more photojournalistic end of things by surprise in an unpleasant way but probably pleased the landscape people. It would be helpful to know if, say, the Z-mount lens combines both the best in close-focus and distance performance.

I did notice the Z6 has the AF Tune feature, just wondering if it was used on the F-Mount lens. I picked up a Z6 kit recently along with the FTZ and 24-70 F4, the performance on photos I have taken has been really great. I was really surprised by how sharp the lens was across the frame at each setting I used. I plan on trying some of my other lens with it as I only had some manual focus lens with me, old Nikon 24, Voigtlander 58 and 40 and couldn’t get and focus confirmation on the 24 and 58. Only had it a couple of weeks so haven’t had much time to read the manual or use it much. So far I like this setup compared to my older gear. Thanks for the video!

The variable that's causing the problem is the fact that you're working in close focusing distances, where the 24-70 VR is very weak. A comparison at landscape subject distances (where the 24-70 VR is very strong) will yield a very different result.

FTZ adapter comes as a disadvantage for the F mount. Use the F lense with the D850 then compare to the Z7 24 70. The adapter just makes it uneven, but at the same time you will fall into comparing the camera performance as well, nonetheless I still think it is more a fair an accurate to leave the FTZ adapter out of the picture, because I would believe it is a disadvantage for the F mount.

Looking at the F at f/2.8 it looks like it was back-focusing, then at f/4.0 it looks like is focused a bit forward. At f/5.6 it seems that the F is back focusing again. Nice review for close focus distances. However for far focus distances (wich is my main priority), the maximum difference (above F5.6 wich is where i care) is 10% in favor of Z-mount sharpness advantage. Just got back from Thailand. 99% shots were at infinity (5 meter or further). The lens is VERY sharp. 24-70mm F2.8E VR. Where is matters for me, the Z mount is a bit dissapointing. I also don't like the new rubber focus/zoom ring. Old ones much more pleasant to use. Oh and another thing: The Sony GM 24-70mm at F5.6+ aperture, so far is just as good at the Z-mount on the better flickr images. Wich is sad cause the Z mount is supposed to be superior. I have nikon DSLR, love it will not part with it, but atm Sony/panasonic are more tempting mirrorless. I'll let people like the 24-70mm F2.8S 'early adoptors', pay the big price for mirrorless and i'll snatch in when it's cheaper. Ps for 3k euro i can get Sony A7RII+ Sony gm 24-70mm, nikon is at least 60% more expensive atm. Soon that price will be so for the A7RIII. Let's hope some ppl after all put Z-mount stuff on ebay. PS 24-70mm F4 is superior impressive (image quality), less so in build (understandable for weight). That is so far the most 'Z-mount proving' lens for me.

I knew it was going to be something like this -had to be, so I already sold my F-mount 24-70. For the moment I stick to the Z-mount f/4 version until you compare it with the Z f/2.8. Then it’ll be a question of bulk and weight... and whether I really want to go back to zooms again, when I had vowed to stick to primes...!

Thanks Ricci. Excellent comparison and thanks for going the extra mile to check for lens variance. I'm really interested in how the f2.8 compares to the f4. Please don't make me buy the 2.8...lol

Z mount is better because of their better resolving power ... Lovely lens lineup 😍👍

It’s interesting, the Z mount lens at 70mm is noticeably shorter than the F mount (ie magnification is lower/field of view is wider)

Same camera so you must be using the adapter on the Z camera? Could the adapter be degrading the F lens any?

Apologies for my English.. I just found this channel recently. I definitly will suscribe to it. Love the comparison. I'm between d850 and Z7 to buy. And I got surprised by the difference between thos lenses. Can I ask you a question please? Or rather, could you answer my question please? the results would be the same if you mount the f lens in a D850 and the Z in the z mount? I want to know if the adapter makes any difference.

You didn't try real world shooting distances though, the VR 24-70mm is well known for performing badly at close range and on test charts, etc. I would like to see a real world image of a landscape or something similar. I have the VR 24-70mm and have used the "S" 24-70mm f2.8 and although the S lens is better, in real world results and at f4-f8 it's way closer than these results!

Big problem with your test is that you compared the VR version of the F mount zoom which is not as sharp as the non VR version.

Ricci, what about calibrating the F lens. Still. Excellent comparison. Comforting to people switching, at least with that lens.

Although the af-fine tune is an option on the Z6 and Z 7 this lens did not need to be calibrated

Hello thanks for this review. Very very interresting. I Understand that you are probably a Pro-Nikon Lens... but did you try and see the same difference of quality with the last Sigma and Tamron 24-70mm 2.8 F mount with The adaptor? They are known to be very good (particularly the Tamron one I think). It could be also interresting.

Today's lens reviews everyone is talking about sharpness although it's the last important aspect of a lens - but if you don't know much about photography, sharpness is the only thing, you can see on your computer right away 😉

for some reason my 24-70 f mount on my z6 is shocking but on my d750 still sharp. I dont understand why. Its the work horse. Maybe there an apple style stuff going on wherenikon somehow make it crap on mitrrorless to snure you upgrade.

As for selling my 24-70 and getting the 24-79 Z. Would you say it's worth the price difference? Also, do you have a video? Comparing the autofocus detection using the FTZ mount. VS using the Z mount? Is there any difference in performance?

Fantastic review! Question: When you are using autofocus in your Z camera - do you use High+(Extended) for framerate or do you keep it at the "High" setting. I'm wondering if the extended mode will provide autofocus as well as the "High" mode. Thank you Ricci - keep it up with this excellent content. Chris.

Interesting video, the Z range is a very very sharp lens. However, the new lens is well out of my price range at the moment so the Z24-70/4 will be staying with me for the foreseeable future. The question that many of us would like to know is just how good is our 24-70/4's compared to the 2.8 versions, I look forward to that comparison as I am very happy with the results from the Z7/24-70 combo and hope that the f4 gives the f2.8 a good test. Great stuff, look forward to the next video.

Question. Did you try the f mount lens on a dslr camera with around the same spec of the Nikon Z 7? Like let's say a Nikon D 850? Nikon Z 7 Nikkor Z 24-70 vs Nikon D 850 with Nikkor 24-70 vr.

Iv done that comparison in my other videos there’s no difference. The same lens on a Z7 and on a D850 is identical

Did you turn off the VR on the F 24 to 70 lens? If it was on and you were on a tripod it could’ve affected it. Or the combination of the lens and the body both having stabilization could have affected it.

I have to say the 24-70mm F2.8E VR F-Mount is one of the most disappointing lenses I've ever owned. I am always reluctant to use it. Such a waste since I only purchased it a year ago. Maybe it is time to go to the Z7 + 24-70 2.8

Z 24-70 F4 is comparable to FX 24-70 2.8. for shure, had both, sold FX very very fast after I tested Z version, bit I decided to just add 50 1.8 Z, and intend to buy 14-30 F4 and 70-200 F2.8 Z, when it arrives, and that is all lenses I will need ever, for my needs, if crap will come out, it will be 100% my fault
