Thank you for your piano scale videos, I'm finding them very helpful for practice. But it seems to me you are using your left hand 3rd finger on the F sharp key at 13:25, while the numbering says 2. Ideally one should play LH 2 on that F sharp key? LH 3 feels a bit more natural to me.
@SomersetAcademyofMusic
@SomersetAcademyofMusic 3 года назад
Yes, you are right. I did use 3 when it should’ve been 2. Since I was at the highest note of the scale it’s not a big deal, but it’s still incorrect. It would only be a problem if I were going up another octave. Mistakes happen even to pros! 🤷‍♀️ These videos take a long time to record and edit. I try to make them as good as I can, but I’m not perfect. I apologize for the mistake. You definitely should try to use the 2 in LH at that spot. Hopefully that error doesn’t confuse you too much!

On my book says to use the 3rd finger on top in all of the minor forms. On the begining in natural minor and harmonic says RH 3F#4G# 1A It seems like Sometimes some scales can have different finger patterns, but we stick to something to avoid confusion in the future

I thought Bach had put an end in this matter of going up the scale using melodic and going down using aeolian. Why I don't find anyone teaching how to ascend and descend using melodic minor? Isn't that correct? Thanks!
@SomersetAcademyofMusic
@SomersetAcademyofMusic 2 года назад
Well we can’t go Bach in time and ask him since he died in 1750, but Bach most definitely used both forms descending in composition. I have never heard or seen anyone say Bach did away with it. If he did nearly every composer who came after him for the past 272 years have ignored it. Every piano teacher, professor and pianist I have ever encountered plays the melodic minor form descending natural. Remember scales aren’t rules to composing. Melodic minor has been used in almost every form of musical composition from Bach to Beatles, but nobody has to use any scale form when they compose. It’s about creating a melody line with a good chord structure to support it. The raised notes of the melodic minor solve some harmony & melody issues the natural minor creates. We need a leading tone going up, but it’s not really necessary coming down. If you want to play the melodic minor descending the same as it ascends just use the same notes and fingering both ways. I believe the scale played in that way is called a Jazz Minor scale. Best of luck to you!

Good stuff but what’s the point? What’s the purpose of the scales? How do you use these them or apply them? 🤔👍🎶
@SomersetAcademyofMusic
@SomersetAcademyofMusic 3 года назад
That’s a great question! First of all scales are the foundation of all music theory. Scales are the basis for building all intervals and chords, and give each note and chord it’s purpose or function in a song. Also, all key signatures are based on scales and necessary for transposing. For piano specifically scales teach us the best way to move around the keyboard regarding the fingers we should you use. That’s best I can explain in a short comment, but needless to say you won’t get very far in music without knowledge of scales.
@barryhunt8527
@barryhunt8527 3 года назад
@@SomersetAcademyofMusic you missed the point. I should have been more specific. I’m aware of what you said. I meant, what’s the point of 3 different minor scales. How would you use them in their own way. E.G. when would you use an harmonic minor instead of an melodic minor or vice verse. As I said before , actual application 👍😁🕺🎶
@SomersetAcademyofMusic
@SomersetAcademyofMusic 3 года назад
OK gotcha! Another great question! Again I will try to explain as best I can in this short text, but basically it has to do with the difference between modal & tonal music. The natural minor is based on the Aeolian mode and is modal. The harmonic & melodic variants are tonal. Tonal music (most piano music) focuses on a specific note, the “tonic.” The tonic is the first note of a scale. So, in the key of C, C is the tonic. The tonic is like “home.” We’re going on a journey, but we will end up back home. So, all the notes in a composition move us forward, around and lead us back to the tonic. The 7th note of a scale is a “leading tone.” It’s leading us back to the tonic. That 1/2 step between B & C (in the key of C) creates that movement back to C. So, when we play tonal music in minor keys we need to create that leading tone by raising the 7th a half step. The 6th & 7th raised in the melodic minor just creates an easier, more pleasing melody, because of that big 1 1/2 step between 6 & 7 in the harmonic. So, when you have a piece of music written in a minor key you will often see and hear the 6th & 7th raised.... AND sometimes they aren’t raised, so therefore we need to have our fingers and ears ready for all three variants. Remember there are all kinds of scales, pentatonic, Hungarian, gypsy, bee-bop, and blues, just to name a few. It just depends on what the composer is trying to create. It’s up to the composer to chose the scale his piece is based on, and we the performer need to be ready to play in whatever “key” or “scale” he has chosen. I hope that helps. Maybe I will make a video in the future on this topic. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

@@barryhunt8527 They lend a different sound to the songs. One note change can make a marked difference. Same as majors and their *relative* minors having the same incidentals (flats and sharps) but the minors having a different (more mournful/sad) sound because of the notes it starts and ends on being changed.
