@@MediaDivision maybe it is pretty niche. But honestly I think in the future you're all going to find a lot of success in this and the channel will continue to grow.
@@MrJoldroyd @media Division. Content generated for higher IQ gets less views. The internet is populated by the C and D students of high school mostly.
The content on this channel is fantastic though I think they'd need to pump out videos much faster for the subs count to go up. And their count will definitely go up if they put out more videos, with such quality.
I think it's also a matter of target audience...most people looking at videography know-how videos seem to be beginners who want to go to THE standard channels for the usual shit content like which sensor size is better, most important gear to have, which gimbal do I buy, etc. Media division is more about crazy fun experiments done by a professional, unlike some of the most popular videography channels.
@@MediaDivision "Sharing knowledge is a gift for those who give it and for those who receive it." It makes me so happy there are still people who think this way. I am blown away by your videos and really appreciate all the work you do!
@@MediaDivision I'll be back in a day or Two when youtube actually let's me watch in 8K xD Still scheming to figure out how to get my hands on the Mavo LF. Good stuff - one of my favorite videos from you!
@@EposVox If you ever travel to Burbank, there's a rental house called CineOrigin, they're the official kinefinity rental in US. BTW, Kinefinity's releasing new cameras at the end of this month
I dare say this may be your finest hour, Nicholas. Beautiful work; possibly the definitive piece I've seen about this topic. Few else are doing work at this level, but even fewer are doing it on topics like this. This reminds me of some of the great documentaries I watched as a boy, pieces that had irreverence, humor, and style to boot. Masterful & meaningful, especially right now. Thanks for risking it for the art, but also for staying safe. To top yourself at this point is a hell of an achievement. Cheers from LA, Soren
Thanks a lot A51… really appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness … we always try to improve from episode to episode, but of course, we can not put this much time and effort and money in every episode we will we do… we would only release twice a year. Thanks again man
A51 I second that.. in the eighties I got a roll of ektachrome 1600P and exposed at 250iso with 40mm f/2.8 along cornwall street between leicester square and piccadilly circus 🎪 and got one shot from the roll processed by one shot processing pushing one stop.. that was not enough while at an apple store ten years ago one guy said he would correct the poor exposure in adobe photoshop and did something quite amazing... bringing out some activity around a taxi fare... that marked a more experimental time for me ⛺️ ...flickr.com/sarchi/albums.. or just look for the hdr set..
you probably dont give a shit but does someone know a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost the account password. I love any tips you can give me.
I've only found this channel yesterday but the amount of value from it is outstanding. If I've learned one thing, it would be that with enough imagination and determination, nothing is impossible. Not even talking about all the creativity and finesse that goes into the production of these. Well done!
@Felix B I did, started watching it in the premiere mode but after 25 min had to reload the page, so I decided to write the comment that I had in mind while waiting for the video to load. I don't see why that should bother you, btw
@@geko9425 I didn't mean the most basic notion, but many other details that were explained here so that everyone could understand without diving into any literature
Best filmmaking channel I ever came across when it comes to how detailed, easy and informational the videos are. Each is just like a small documentary that's mouth watering till the end. This is really one of the rarest videos that I'm willing to stick around for the whole 50 mins. Well done guys
Thanks a lot Cyril… this is only possible because we own a lot of stuff from other projects, and by now manufacturers like to support us a s well. We are feeling blessed, but the road to that is open to anyone with a bit of vision and afford.
Good grief, I think I’ve watched the last few episodes 5 or 6 times each over the last few months. I’m not even a videographer, rather a stills guy. They’re just so damn engaging! Just... damn good job! And good on you for using your male friends as models rather than always your wife! (Lovely though she obviously is). It’s refreshing, especially coming from photography.
@@MediaDivision Indeed! Thanks again for the great videos, and for virtually keeping me company into the late hours of the night while I repair cameras, haha 😄
I always look forward to your well informative and entertaining content. I get the same anticipation as I do when I receive my ASC Magazines every month, (Every issue since 1970) as I do when you post a new video. My 50 years behind a camera appreciates your wit and detail. Your channel is first class in all aspects. I'm an Old Dog, and you keep teaching New Tricks. Looking forward to your next one.
Watching every second breathless, worried, excited and with a pinch of jealousy. Great video and got an instant sub. Respect to all the members of the team.
I rarely comment on RU-vid, but you guys totally deserve attention for the overall quality displayed in this video. Thank you, really! Just one thing is not so clear to me - probably I should rewatch some specific parts of the video: how did Kubrick manage to obtain such a deep Depth of Field in the candle sequence, filming at f0.7? Did he actually stopped down the lens? It is clear to my eyes that your result at f0.7 has a much shallower DoF. Sorry in advance for the probable dumb question, and thanks again for this production of yours. I am gonna share it with all my friends and colleagues. Amazing!!
Thanks a lot Riccardo...totally our pleasure. No, he shot at f0.7... it was the whole point and otherwise it would have been impossible using 100iso film stock. The DoF is indeed very narrow. The trick is to compose the scene in a way, to keep all important things on the same focal plane. The difference to out "The Mission" film is, that we used a 100mm lens (instead of a 50mm) and we had a full frame sensor instead of s35 film... resulting in a much deeper DoF.One thing besides the speed is, that the Biotar that we used has a slightly bend focal plane... it works like a light tilt shift on top of the narrow FoV. That was not a dumb question and we always appreciate viewers that really dig in deep!
Such beauty --- such a voyage into the dreamy realm of high speed lenses and their bokeh. A true trip. It is rare (even unique) to get this quality and this combination of technicality and poetic results.
Wow... you guys aren't getting enough recognition for this. I guess people really like seeing youtubers scream at the start while showing how they make coffee in every video haha. You put so much effort into these videos that it puts many documentaries to shame. And you don't do what has been done a million times. I appreciate the knowledge that you give and I hope many others will too. Edit: Joined the supporters as you definitely deserve it :)
In the words of someone from my childhood… I want to believe. I want to make RU-vid a platform that is a harbour for quality and depth that mainstream media can't offer… where else would we get we get something like this? We surely would love some more recognition… and maybe some financial incentive to go along. Thanks so much for being a supporter and your kindness!
Incredible. This is the first video I've seen from your channel and I learned more in the last hour than I have in countless hours with other creators. Thanks so much!
As someone interested in ultra fast lenses, I've heard a lot about Barry Lyndon, but this is the best description/video on the use of the lens for it I've seen.
@@MediaDivision It's wild. I've got the Canon 0.95, an Elitar Soligor 25mm 0.95, and had a Canon 50mm f0.75 (just put up a video on it!), so the history of how folks actually shot with these before it was more convenient is amazing. I was really curious about that more modern film that was shot almost entirely with re-housed versions of the 50mm f0.95 too. Crazy. I admire that dedication and curiosity!
Wow… I thought I was a nerd… you live it. What is that accent? You assume rightly, that the "rear element" is an integral part of these lenses… it works like a focal reducer. If you remove it, the flange extends, but the lens gets slower accordingly and you only have a fast lens after that… blah blah blah ;-) Looking at your sample pictures you can tell that your lens suffers from the same problem my Zeiss (and all other Xray lenses) suffers… a curved focal plane. As far as I am informed, the Xray cameras had a vacuum driven negative holder that would give the curvature. This allows for much simpler and cheaper optical designs. My R-Biotar is designed for 6x7 negative, meaning that the FF crop has less distortions compared to your images
@@MediaDivision Thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful reply! That earned a sub on its own :D That is really fascinating. I have an obsession with weird lenses - particularly older ones. I was really pleased that I got the 0.75 to work with the custom clamp, but obviously in practice due to that curvature it wasn't the most err, practical. For... anything haha. The bokeh was nuts though. I'm all for wild and out of control bokeh rather than nice smooth bokeh. I'd love to see an x-ray camera sometime - I guess they'd just be huge machines though, with a space for the lenses to fit. That R-Biotar is beautiful!
Media Division I have ran out of superlatives to describe this video. This is simply astounding work. I have rarely been inspired by RU-vid videos, yours are one of those.
Thanks a lot Mathieu!!!! Go for it… I am curious what poetic spin you will put on the subject. Little input. We originally planned to not use candles (boring) but indoor fireworks and slow motion. We couldn't do it because of the lockdown.
As a filmmaker and a photographer, I think I just fell in love with this channel. I cannot tell you what incredible top notch quality episode this was... absolutely perfect. You got yourself a new fan! Bravo Gents!
As "The Mission" started, I was almost in tears. You are incredible craftsmen, experts in capturing human emotion with such beautiful visuals. Thank you for this wonderful 50 minute experience.
This was so amazing. Thank you for your hard work in making this episode. The bokeh that was produced from the Zeiss R-Biotar was smoother than butter on a hot sunny day. Your videos are delivered in such a professional and exciting way. It feels as if this show should be on Netflix and I seriously do hope you are pitching it to them as it is on that level for sure.
Thanks a lot Brakmaster… I am sitting here and staring with tears in my eyes on the phone… but Netflix will not call. Can you tell them that they need to call Nikolas? 😅 I would love to produce a Netflix show, but to be honest… I have no idea where to start.
@@MediaDivision Start sending emails. And dont stop with Netflix. All these new streaming services are hungry now for content. The only problem I see is that your content might be very niche. But the format, the delivery, the quality and length are definitely there. We are living in very difficult times and to be honest I don't know how bad it's still going to get. In fact I have closed my business due to this situation and don't know if I recover. Thankfully there are channels like yours that keep me company and occupied. I know how difficult it is to keep doing what you are doing if the financials don't add up but youtube cannot be a source of income for you at the moment. Keep hustling doing what you do and it will come organically. I am certain that there are many people which you can help with your skill sets for the appropriate fee. Sorry for the long message but I deeply resonate with what you are going through. All the best - Chris.
We are all in the same boat... I don't know if we survive... and it doesn't seem likely. In that case, our YGT engagement comes to end too. We never made any significant money here, and the Netflix thing was more or less a joke. The whole industry is de facto on lockdown and there are 100 producers on every opening.
@@MediaDivision Everything will get back to normal just like every other time. It will be painful in the meantime though. RU-vid is a great way to escape this reality whether you are consuming or creating. You will make it through this and come out stronger - we all will. Stay safe.
This video really blows both my eyes and my mind.. it opens many possibilities that i have been observing since 2016.. I'm vice president of drone valley, a consortium among researcher, industry, and administration.. in 2016 we have explored the potential to use primary drones in filmmaking industry, we think that this is going to be a game changer, unless we solve the problem of lens.....
Glad you got something out of it Jose. Not sure what ultra fast lenses could be used for in that context. The weight and shallow DoF makes them not drone friendly.... at all.
@@MediaDivision : nowadays there are already many drone film festivals across the globe, and drone has already been using widely in film-making to this day.. however, the current challenge for drone filming is to be used at night or low visibility shooting.. the weight it's a problem for drone actually.. there are also some industrial drones that have payload above 50 kg.. (50kg used to be the limit).. and there are already many multi-axis stabilizer which can make the drone moving really super smoothly and steady.. the only problem is really the lens.. though there are already the multi-spectrum camera that can capture light beyond visible light spectrum, however it requires AI to recolor it in the post-processing, which takes really a lot of time and effort.. and most filmmakers still prefer to see with the feeling of "natural light".. another effect that ultra fast lenses can do but multi-spectrum camera can't replace is that supper thin foreground.. which can put the main object into the subject and eliminate the background all "naturally".. no other solution than ultra fast lenses will be able to deliver such effect "naturally"..
Wow, so much interesting detail. I expected just more of what I had already heard about the Zeiss .7, but this covered so much more ground. Love the techy stuff.
After watching this magnific work of video, my 45mm f0.95 seems like a slow lens... but, even being manual focus, also looks more practical and far easy to use! Thanks fot this masterpiece of production! I saw it 3 years ago and now found it again between favorite videos!
Absolutely no doubt about the practical part... now put yourself in Kubricks shoes when you don't see what you are filming. Very glad you enjoy Frande... now and then. Thanks for being around.
@@MediaDivision Such amazing and important knowledge is not found easily online, specially with the dedication and complete information you guys bring to other Filmmakers out there; passion in our jobs is important, but without knowledge about tech aspects is hard to understand the "why's". Thank you again for entertaining and good content.
Always always Alexander… Edutainment is what we are all about. I think, that I am living proof, that you can be good at this with only a theoretical knowledge to start with ;-)
I have never learned so much about the science of cinema photography and still photography science in such a short period of time. Truly a fast lens into optics. Real value.
It's f0.7.... developed for the NASA and used by Stanley Kubrick. This isn't a lot of chromatic aberrations for a lens that fast. In fact, there is no lens that fast. It's absolutely one of the greatest optical feat of all time.
Amazing content! All around epic. I've got to go in defense of the Canon 55mm f1.2 though. The FD-EF adapter with the lens element is dog shit, every single one I personally tested at least. Canon has produced one that the glass is actually good but its no easy to find and its quite expensive. So, all of the "ghosting" effect and the lack of sharpness is mostly due that. A converted one, a no-glass adapter OR one with the proper Speedbooster (FD-NEX? FD-M43?) would perform considerably better. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot… yeah, we know and we mention that... due to the corona crisis the mount kit got stuck in customs and we can't buy a focal reducer just for this episode. Sorry, but that is live. I am sure that the FD can do way more
Absolutely SICK! I don't think there's much around RU-vid at this production level. I applaud you for the huge investment of time and energy. What a fantastic work of art!
Wow. I'm blown away by the detail, depth and integrity of of your video, which is my first. Kudos! I'm formerly a newspaper Photojournalist and videocam operator.
I enjoyed my time watching this video.. seriously! I watched it on 2 days, when you talk about something, i pause and start researching about the information you said or the terms. Am new in filmmaking but i have almost a decade of experience in photography and still there are some new information i got from your video. Happy that i found your channel by coincidence 👍🏽

This video really stands out from the crowd.. in the best way possible. Beautifully made, great production, and very human too. I also loved the quality of the film that was made with that giant 0.7 lens.. it was silky smooth. Really well done.
My dear friend i was watching your first video *"Beyond IMAX: Filming with a gigantic 16K sensor with sample"* back in 2019 i love highest quality video when RU-vid Support 32K & 16K with Codec x265 (HEVC - H.265) with high refresh Rate Like 500fps for Future Monitors/TVs 500Hz, also Support Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, am so excited about those and we need share our feedback to RU-vid Creators and developers, please do it people and i hope you all have a good life! :)
32K or even 16K make no sense on RU-vid for the foreseeable future?! We know what HEVC is and RU-vid does not use it because of royalties they would have to pay to the MPEG group. For 4K+ resolution, RU-vid uses it's own VP9 codec that delivers similar compression quality then HEVC. 500fps refresh/playback makes no sense whatsoever in any given scenario. I am all for quality, but put it where it is meaningful and improves the experience
@@MediaDivision You know what great about Higher resolution than 8K you can Make a Zoom in even 500% it will still look great crisp and sharp, also high biterate and high Codec with 500fps gonna be Blur free if the camera moving so fast and you did paused the video the details gonna be there to see
Love this video! It's truly amazing to me how many engineering hours have gone into pushing this boundary. Like you say, the difference between f/1.4 and f/0.7 is only a factor of 4, or 2 stops, and yet so many millions of dollars have been poured into R&D for this.
Thanks man... I have no idea what Zeiss got for developing the f0.7 ... I doubt it was millions. By their own admission, it is not terribly hard to do (they build f0.1 during WWII already)... it was simply the only game in town when one encountered low light. Today, there is just no market for it.
@Media Division, I am not in to cameras or lenses but I watched this whole thing from the beginning to the end..... Probably the best production on RU-vid I have ever seen.
This was a very very well done episode. It was just entertaining to watch and the length of this video was absolutely not noticeable. Appreciate your time which went into this.
Amazed and speechless at the technical brilliance of the video. The technical knowledge & information given in the video, the effort behind making such an otherwise impossible video and the easy way in which the most complex things are explained and demonstrated, are akin to a miracle. The most intelligent video I have ever watched in technical filmmaking.
Great channel. I collected a whole bunch of Canon FD S.S.C. prime lenses which I kept but never used again since swapping to digital. Your idea to re-use these high quality lenses in that way is awesome.
@Adam Ouellette Our pleasure Adam. While the LF is an interesting camera, I think it doesn't matter much these days... all new cameras are just amazing.

Like all the others, I just have to compliment the production value of this video, not to mention how informative it was (and it was that "fun" kind of informative that just makes you want more and more) Better than a lot of stuff on TV/in movies these days. I can't wait to see you hit a million subs!
