F1 drivers are fast in an actual Formula One car, sure, but we were secretly hoping we'd be quicker than them on our home turf of videogames. Find out exactly what happened when we challenged real life Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver Pierre Gasly on F1 2019 and discover the seven reasons he's faster than you in racing games. Subscribe for more videos like this!
Whether it's discipline, focus or sheer perfectionism, Gasly proved that he's not just handy behind the wheel of a real racing car. With only 20 minutes or so spent playing new F1 game F1 2019 during a busy real life Grand Prix weekend, the real life F1 driver demonstrated impressive pace.
F1 2019 is out now.

Speaking as a flight simulator fan and real life general aviation pilot Mike has pretty much hit the nail on the head with his observations, especially in regards to the technical knowledge and the ability to "do a lap" on a virtual circuit. When I was learning to fly I'd do virtual flights based on what was upcoming in training such as a circuit of Barton Airfield in Manchester (where I trained) as well as cross country and emergency procedures, also I could apply the theoretical knowledge I'd picked up for years as a flight simmer to real life. Mike mentioned that the controls and steering wheel that Pierre Gasly used in F1 2019 wasn't an exact copy of the one he used in real life yet he was still able to attain a good time in the lap, I've experienced the same in the fact that my CH yoke isn't an exact replica of a Cessna 150 yoke but it's "close enough" to be functional and thus your experience and training take over.

One question that occurs to me is whether Pierre would have been quite as fast using a standard controller instead of a driving rig, since the former is more unlike an actual F1 car.
@dontaetrowell5011
@dontaetrowell5011 5 лет назад
The rig is probably faster because its more natural, resembles what he does daily & you can be smoother. I personally can't hold a consistent 125 degree turn with a controller , I have to constantly tap in the direction. I sort of have the same problem with acceleration, I feel I have a lot more control over traction with the pedal than the trigger.
@numuhukumakiakiaialunamor5174
@numuhukumakiakiaialunamor5174 5 лет назад
@@dontaetrowell5011 I have the same problem with steering, it's really tricky to hold a correct angle on a controller. However, I find myself much more precise on acceleration and braking with a trigger compared to a pedal. Probably because I used a controller for a long time and only recently started using the wheel
@numuhukumakiakiaialunamor5174
@numuhukumakiakiaialunamor5174 5 лет назад
I would imagine he would be slightly off the pace initially, but would probably quickly pick it up because of his incredible adaptability. He would have less feel for the car due to lack of force feedback, but he would still know where to brake, accelerate, change gears and generally how a car should behave. He would have to use his fingers for throttle and brakes, not his feet, but he could get used to that, given he has experience with a controller (unless he plays CoD on a wheel xD). So yeah, I reckon he would be on the pace but not immediately and maybe a few tenths of a second off his best wheel times
@marhawkman303

And they would get incredibly competitive as well, some of them coming to the show pretty much only to beat the others, not for the actual talk show part.

Many years ago, I bought a steering wheel and pedals for my PC to play the new version of the F1 game (think it might have been F1GP4, but it was ages ago). With all the assists off I could just about control the car in perfectly dry conditions, albeit going much slower than the AI cars, but in the wet the slightest touch on the throttle would see me spinning off into the distance. I'd be lucky to complete the first lap before getting lapped by the AI.

Simulators are getting SO crazy. Hell, even back in 2006, NASCAR Driver Denny Hamlin played NASCAR Racing 2003 Season on his computer prior to a race at Pocono since he had never been there before. Ended up winning the race. William Byron got to take over Jeff Gordon's iconic #24 simply from playing iRacing and being really, really good at it. Crazy. I was born a decade too late, hahaha.

Guy in get shirt: Obviously he’s very busy. It was a Formula One race weekend, so he’s there to work. Guy in reddish shirt: Is he very busy? He has to race a car once a week. Vrrrrrrrrrrroooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. *I died laughing*

Points for Andy name dropping Nigel Mansell👌 More on why F1 racers are so good: they have encyclopedic knowledge of tracks optimal lines & braking zones, their reflexes are faster than normal due to the job & this being a video game, they don't have to worry about g forces taking a toll on their bodies.

Well, driving a simulation is how they practice when not on track. So, I think if F1 2019 is closer to real life, then it's just like them practicing on a simulator they have. But it IS different, on how they feel all the car and track feedbacks with all their body, not only their hands with a steering rig/controller. (Well unless you have that awesome moving rig)

Lool so the fact that the video is talking about how fast F1 drivers are, yet Pierre Gasly is on the thumbnail was done intentionally right?

Did you miss the point in the video where he mentioned that Pierre Gasly played f1 2019 against him? It's ok if you did because he only talked about it for 18 minutes

Aaron CCS As someone who started as a CS GO player when I was younger and now have taken up sim racing, this makes so much sense to me!

They literally practice in simulators down to the minute detail identical to their own cars, I think they can rock it in an EA game
@TheZanzaroni

They rely on the physical forces acting on their body to make decisions, something a game can't do, it's actually harder for them to go faster in the game than it is in real life, or the actual simulator where those forces are present

New t-shirt Mike? Since Andy was trying to get you burglarized and tell us about his crazy busy schedule -tell him to put a broom up his bottom. He can sweep the floor as he goes. Maximum efficiency.

It's interesting because my cousin Edward Williams drives for Mercedes in FIA's Gran Turismo world championship and he can always beat me whenever we do any sort of driving so it clearly works both ways. Or I'm bad at driving which is also true
