F1 has the worst rules for pushing cars off the road. I’m not a fan of Russell or Verstappen but it’s really dumb that F1 will (rightly in my opinion) penalize a driver for pushing another one off the track and staying on the track but (wrongly in my opinion) not punish a driver for going off the track and pushing a driver off. Basically every other motor sports series in the world has this figured out. If a driver is substantially alongside (at least front wheel to wheel tire) then they are entitled to room on the track. Did Norris deserve a penalty for overtaking off the track… tbh idk, but it annoyed me that no one even seemed to consider a penalty for Max pushing both of them off.

The thing is max got to the apex first which meant Lando does not have any right to the corner, so pushing someone off does not really come into picture because it was not Landos corner to begin with. Max just knows rules too well and knows he can risk it more compared to Lando. If they try to modify this rule somehow to prevent drivers dive bombing for apex then the better drivers will come up with something new anyway

@@donkosaurus I agree.. well max has got rules changed before so😂 honestly I believe whatever the rules are at the end.. drivers like max fernando with that killer instinct will find a grey area to utilise it to their fullest.. has always happened and will continue to happen. I am a max fan and the penalty seemed a little harsh earlier to me too, but when you read the stewards reasoning and the rules, max just played it perfectly and mclaren messed up to a certain extent. Cant blame lando really.

@@vaibhavagrawal4769Yeah, but max only got to the apex first because he braked way too late. And you can tell he braked to late by the fact he did not make the corner himself. Had max braked early enough to stay on the track, lando would have been in front.

@@hannesgroesslinger Yeah and thats track limits at best. He didnt cut the corner but ran wide. Thats the 'loophole' if you want to call it that. Thats why driver on the outside attempts a switch back more often than not instead of running on the outside.. max on charles hungary 2022. Lando tried to overtake on outside on a corner which is not technically his. and then kept the throttle pinned to the floor and overtook off the track. That is 5 seconds plain simple. Had lando at the very least remained side by side it would have been termed as racing incident but once Max ran him out (which he can given the corner is technically his) lando just decided to overtake off the track

the inconsistency of the stewards is the problem, not even the drivers know what the rules are because they're never applied consistently. even if max was ahead at the apex he still outbraked himself and went off the track gaining an advantage. when the rules are open to interpretation we get issues like this, where teams think they're right based on the regulations, only to find out the stewards looked at them differently. great video as always.

You’re ignoring the fact he kept a much faster lando behind for like 7 laps with some really solid defense and wheel to wheel, the off track incident admittedly was inevitable honestly seeing how many drivers went off there, tsunoda got penalized for overtaking off track there and so did Gasly so its not like Norris was the only one who was penalized for something like that.

@@srthebox4946 yeah but max didn’t make track limits. So his defense is illegal too. It’s like a soft version of brazil 2021. he’s behind, deliberately brakes too late with no intention of making the corner, pushes the other driver off while going off too. If that’s legal just divebomb and run both yourself and your rival off track and you can’t be overtaken. As we saw in brazil it doesn’t matter if you go off by 1m or 50m when you’re defending. There needs to be a rule change asap. Either both overtaking AND defending off track should be illegal or overtaking off track should be legal when the defending driver pushes you off. Or let’s at least make overtakes like this legal when the defending driver is also off track.

The debate should never have been which car was ahead at the apex. The debate should be whether or not Lando had any chance of making that corner, on his own, going as fast as he was. The answer is, he didn't. What he did is one of the oldest tricks in the book for race drivers, and 90% of the "fans" don't even realize it. Luckily, it didn't work out for him, likely because the stewards understand racing a bit better than the fans.
