He sounds like he is still thinking in Finnish and translating it to English in his mind. I would think that is not actually the case after so many years of using English as business language but it sounds like it to me.
very finnish not to moan. I csan imagine it's not fun to crack your skull. What i took when i followed Mika's career. He became nice person...he was very competitive before. Ofc he was fast after accident but he was also nice as he is. Knock on the head made him better person.
Mika was straightforward in attitude, handsome with a nice finnish accent, fast on-track and won 2 WDCs. He had and achieved basically everything. Legend of F1, more so because of the way he carried himself. Didn't cry in front of the media, settled everything face to face. Zero attitude or ego and a funny guy.
For me the very best F1 driver ever - thank you Mika Hakkinen! I will never forget his overtaking of "THE Michael" (as Mika called Schumacher) in Spa 2000! 😇
Mika is my all time favorite driver. I don’t know why but as I’ve loved learning about so many drivers throughout the history of F1 I find myself just landing on Mika as my favorite. Super fucking quick also!
I was always a fan of Mika, he was my man. Thing is, in these retrospectives, because Mika is a two time champion, they seem to talk things out as if that was his destiny. They always overlook how, like Jean Alesi, Mika was one of those perennial top-level "what DOES he have to do to win a race?!" drivers. Championships were never a consideration. Watching it all play out at the time, it felt to me more that it was only after winning Jerez 97 (fortuitously) that that monkey was finally off his back. Only from then on did he really "unleash".
I kind of want to go back and see the whole 2000 season. He looked so dominant, but I understand that he didn't win. Honestly, Hakkinen shouldn't be forgotten, he's an absolute legend.
Häkkinen should have been champion in 2000. Actually, if he had had better cars throuthout his career, he would have been a multiple champion, no doubt about it.
37:55 We all know at Maranello rules are different. I was so happy to see Hakkinen and McLaren beat the Ferrari International Assistance in Japan after Malaysia.
DRS killed formula 1 - made it dead boring. These guys were the real racers that put the thrill in overtaking. Never watched F1 after Hamilton's second season - you could see it was just a fixed show after that - boring AF.
Shame this is the edited version. 15:15 When Mika tells of Ayrton asking him after Estoril qualifying: “What did you do? How you were quicker than me, what did you do?” Rather than Steve Ryder just butting in, Mika’s actual response was “I’m not sure if you can show this on TV, but I made ‘this’ sign (he proceeded to make a ‘wanker’ gesture with his right hand half below the camera shot), and he said that Senna was absolutely *furious* about it. 😂 I’ll check to see if I can find the full version somewhere else. It’s no longer included in the F1 TV Documentaries version of this interview either. But someone will have seen it. Plus you can tell that it’s edited (by Sky) because the way Ryder just butts in “but he put you in your place in the race” and Mika was still speaking at the start of Ryder’s sentence. It’s another victim of cancel culture & just clumsy editing unfortunately.
imagine any driver of todays f1 speaking to the guy that almost make him crash at top speed, likq he did with schumy,in spa ,amazing driver and personality
Wow no love for this doco. I watched this guy take it to MS like no other could. He was 10 times worse than Kimi to the media but 10 times faster on track. No pit lane or media infighting, just good racing shakes 1st the beginning and end of a season and look forward to the next one. To think that Coulthard and Irvine were the no. 2s to these guys shows the quality of the guys at the front. Im glad he retired when he did....
Why would you say he was worse to the media? I’m Finnish, and Mika is quite affable. Kimi is a PR Nightmare, but Mika is friendly as hell and has a good sense of humor....
My friend Mika just brought a northern sobriety to interviews. He's a loving, sensitive, intelligent human. He was not looking for money in interviews, if you know what I mean. His performance drove (pun intended) his income.
Mika is a totally class act. I particularly like his description of racing with “The Michael” His move during the race at spa was breathtaking and something that only a real top-class driver would have the audacity to do. In my opinion Mika is a greater driver than “The Michael ”
I love mika but he only won 98 before Micheals car stalled on the grid and had to start at the back of the grid and 99 Schumacher broke his leg half way through season Very lucky but still Amazing driver
He is a very good driver, but not the best. He's pushing out on Aida 94 was very totally stupid, and I'm not surprised Ayrton was furious. He's good, but he's step backward compare level Senna, Mansell or Prost. At the time when he was racing with Schumacher, I want to Mika won, but I knew Michel was a better driver...
I don’t think us normal people even understand who’s really good. Mika, Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Berger… all these guys, they understand/understood the name of the game at a level that we can’t comprehend. They were all insanely good. Senna was my favorite of all time and I love Mika as well. I’d say they were my favorite two drivers. I love all the drivers though. That was such a golden era, the 80s and 90s. I haven’t been able to be interested after that. I switched to watching MotoGP in the early 2000s which was one of the golden eras for that sport still. Or maybe I’ve gotten older and I’m just not up to date with the names and drivers and riders anymore. I think MotoGP is still fun to watch now. But F1 for me at least became boring somewhere down the line. But back in the day it was so exciting.
@@lassesuurmunne8340 I was on the pit crew of a TransAm race team for 2 years, and both of our pro race drivers (Scotty Lagasse and Jacob Mosler) seemed to think that there's a natural plateau. Some guys have a talent for strategy, or at using the car's setup to the fullest, or finding the last ounce of grip. But in general, both of them thought that (past a certain level anyway) luck and preparedness decided races more than any particular x-factor of driver talent. Although the fastest Formula class either of them drove was a Formula Three, I think...
Mika was better than Michael because he didn't have to cheat his way to a championship. Michael is an all time great but just like Ayrton, he always got dirty when he was pressured. Ask Rubens about Hungary 2010.
