F150 Keyless entry keypad replacement - What I thought would be a quick easy job turned out to be a real pain in the rear. In the end I got it fixed. Not necessarily the right way, but A way.
Man, you just saved me some pain, thank you for posting the video in entirety, because otherwise it would be hard to understand why you wouldn't want to pull those panels off. I'd buy ya a beer if I could!
Ford in Lake Charles La. charged $65 for the switch and cable which I took the cover plate off of and put it on my old switch. Thanks to you I was spared taking the door apart I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Ohhh you man you saved me alot of time and effort. I had the same exact situation Ford F150 2018 but thankfully i watched the whole entire video before tearing the door down. Thanks for this helpful video
Just happened to me on my 2015 f150. Thank you for saving me countless hours that i would have spent trying to get this fixed. Replacing the plastic took less than 2 minutes
Great video. I wish I would’ve watched it in its entirety before I started. I was trying to undo that cord with that second plug up hi and thought I would see how you continue to do it. I just need to replace the face as well, so I backtracked and did that. Thank you very much for this video. It was very helpful.
Adam, I watched your video because I accidentally broke the tab on my keypad as well . . . or so I thought. I was attempting to remove those glossy black B-pillar pieces to have them wrapped with a Matt-black finish, and when I pried on the keypad I heard something drop down inside the door panel - I thought I broke it. While watching your video I realized it was the small metal clip that fell and nothing was actually broken. After removing the inside door panel and pealing back that clear plastic, I used a magnet to fish for the small clip, found it, . . . then snapped it back onto the keypad and it was just like new. Your close-up shot of that new keypad saved me from buying a new one because I thought the tab was broken. So, somewhere down in your door cavity is that metal clip - and if you ever hear a tiny rattle coming from the door as your driving down the road - that's what it is!
Great video! The numbers on my keypad were so worn that it wouldn’t be hard for someone to figure out my code. So I bought this part planning to open up the door and replace it just like you. Not only can you take off the clip/frame, the rubber number pad also pulls right out and is easily placed into the original part without disturbing the wiring harness. I think your video probably saved me at least 4 hours of frustration! Thanks for sharing the good, bad, and ugly of these projects.
Jay, I’m looking at the numbers on my keypad and I do not see how you can remove the number part without the wires connected. It looks like they are in the back and not removable. Any ideas?
@@c.c.8771 Once the plastic pieces come apart, you can pull the rubber right off of the circuit board. If you have removed the trim (Just like towards the end of this video), the rubber numbers remove easily. It's going to feel like taking an old calculator apart.
@@jabraymer Absolutely. Rubber numbers pulled right out . I used a pocket knife to "grab" the top where it is inserted into the plastic housing. After that I carefully worked teh entire rubber piece from top to bottom. Thanks Jay for that piece of information.
Dude!! You and the original poster have just saved me a s**t load of time and, I’m sure, frustration. I loved his idea of just replacing the plastic holder but, like yours, my numbers are getting worn and really wanted to replace those, too. Thanks SO much for the comment!
I've got the same situation and as I started watching you pull the panels off, I started seeing more and more of an evening going down the tubes to do the same to complete this repair. Glad you found a workaround ! I have had Fords dating all the way back to the '64 Mustang (bought in the early 1980's) and it seems like Ford has always had a habit of making some repairs damned near impossible for the average mechanic to handle. This is just another case of it -- needing to spend $25-$50 for an entire part to replace a piece of $1 plastic. Seems like they should sell the plastic as a standalone piece to save owners a bit of money.
Seems like some planned obsolescence to not make the part so it plugs directly into the key pad. I’m very tempted to just do some painters tape and silicone it in nicely. 😅
You don't need to remove the pillar....just tie a string to the old harnesss, pull the harness out....hook string to harness on new keypad and snake it back in...easy peasy
Thanks for the update. I think someone tried to steal my baby through this keypad. I didn't want to go buy it but now watching ur video.. I'll have it tomorrow morning.
FYI to all - I went a different route and took the new keypad and harness to a reputable car stereo installation place and they cut and soldered all the wires from the new keypad to the old harness. Took less than an hour and cost $70. Just another option if nec…
I’m about to install my 2015’s 4th keypad…they keep breaking the top tab every 2 years or so. I have done it myself before. You need to roll the window down, remove the weatherstrip to expose the screws that hold the door pillar trim in place. I needed to hook the door panel back up a few times as you need the window up or down at various times to get the harness routed through. Total pain in the rear. I’m going to use your method this time…wish I knew the cover would just snap off the last time!!!
Oh boy . Lol thanks ! I’m trying to find out how to unplug the key pad. I think the neighborhood thief has my key pad# and apparently it can’t be deleted / changed. Just another great idea by ford engineers !
Thanks for the information! It will save me a lot of time. Where can you find the parts? I’m sure that my keypad needs to be replaced because the buttons don’t work very well. If you can, send me a link or name of a website to find this part. I think I only need the keypad and outer shell that broke for you. Thanks
Thanks for the video, I learned a lot about the keypad replacement for F150's. My entry keypad has been used so much the lettering has come off. Question - Once you took the trim piece off the new keyless entry part, would the rubber type keypad with the numbers come off? Would it come off in one piece? If so I could just replace the rubber keypad and not have to worry about removing everything. Thanks again for the great video.
where is a good place to order part. Bought one from Amazon and I cant take off housing. Any video or way to take off without breaking tabs. Buying another one ..smh to trying again..
It’s been a while so I don’t remember for sure but just google Ford parts. There are lots of places selling online. I would only buy genuine factory parts. Or you could just get from a local dealer
I really appreciate you posting this, BUT I cannot for the life of me figure out how to snap out the outer ring of the keypad. It's like it has tabs holding it in. I purchased the part directly from my Ford Dealer. Any help anyone can give would be very much appreciated!
Why not cut the five wires located behind the buttons of the old key pad, cut the wire off of the new key pad and reconnect the old wire harness with the new keypad?
You could do that if the pad needs to be replaced. In my case it was just the trim ring that broke and I’d prefer not to cut and splice a factory harness unless absolutely necessary.
These key pads always break by themselves with the wind and temperature change the plastic clips turn super fragile and will break with one good speed bump
I have a 2016 Tarurs and the black trim cracked. The trim on the driver side is one assembly and I could not just replace the keypad like you. I had the same problem, I could not fit the connector through that gab from the top going down. I removed the outside trim between the door and window, be careful it's metal, and was able to run the whole trim up through the inside of the door. I hope this helps other models. This guy also helped. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QJdmraNPk9M.html&t To remove the trim, the part has adhesive tape. I ran a small screwdriver up the tape and gently separated it from the door.
Good video, helpful with what to do and not do. Probably could have saved yourself some money by just buying new clip instead of the whole unit but at least it’s fixed!
Ford dealer in central Indiana wants $73 for the keypad and 2 hrs of labor at $145.00 per hour to do this job. When I declined that they wanted to charge me $35 for giving me that estimate. I was in the dealership a total of 15 minutes, drinking my own coffee . Ridiculus rip off.
A complete waste of time absolutely worthless information this video is labeled incorrectly it should have started out that you were just replacing the trim piece.
