So i own a 2017 f150 with max tow AND i own that exact APEX 300bhs double slide travel trailer. It only weights 6000lbs dry with a dry hitch weight of 690. Both well under capacity. Pulls it like a dream.

Where do you typically tow? Flat areas or hills? My tow capacity and payload is well within ranges of a 7,600 lb GVWR trailer I’m looking at, but I’m concerned with wind, even with a WDH.

Hello. I just bought this truck (Silverado 1500 LT 2FL Turbomax, 4x4) about 4 weeks ago, this car is beautiful, good, strong engine. I want to buy an RV but I don't know if this vehicle can tow an RV or not? If so, what is the maximum weight of an RV? My Truck: Brand new 2024 Gvwr=7,000lbs. Gcwr=14,500lbs. Rgawr=38,000lbs. Maxpayload=1,966lbs. Curbweight=5,034lbs. Conventional TWR=9,000lbs. Max tongue weight=900lbs. Gooseneck TWR=8,900lbs. Max tongue weight=1,335lbs. Gawr FRT=3,800lbs. Gawr RR=3,800lbs. Tire size: FRT=RR=265/65R18 T. (rim 18x8.5J) SPA=265/70R17 S (rim 17x8J). Font=Rear=Spare=240 kPa, 35Psi. So, Can my truck (GVWR=7,000lbs) tow an RV/Trailer with a maximum load of 9,000lbs? If possible, please post more videos of the Silverado 1500 2.7l, 4-cylinder truck pulling an RV trailer. Thanks

My camper is too big for my F150 but we don't go far. I got airbags and it has the max tow package as well. It has plenty of power. It just gets pushed around the road some. Also I don't have 80k laying around to buy an F250 lol

If you adjust your speed to account for any wind you won't have to worry much. I'm a truck driver and the trailers I haul are a bigger wall even when empty we have to adjust our speed for high winds.

You hit the nail on the head in regards to "profile" vs weight & 1/2t towing. Per spec's I am well within tolerances for my F150 & tt. I have added air bags, upgraded trailer suspension, additional sway control arm and I am very careful about how things are loaded. But when the wind get to blowing things can get a little white knuckle. After 4+ years with this last trailer I'm doing enough windy days now that the 1/2T is being replaced with a 1T. Time for a better towing experience ! I say this with ~40 years towing experience.

F150’s are lighter than most half ton trucks which give them their high payload and towing capacity. The tongue weights you’re quoting are well above 10% of the GVWR of the trailer which is considered the average. However I would like to see manufacturers include the tongue weight on sticker along with dry weight and GVWR. I’ve found the best way to stay away from the gross weight of the trailer is to travel with empty waste tanks and maybe 10 gallons of water max to run the toilet in transit. I’m full time and live alone and I don’t have a lot of stuff so I have a bit more wiggle room when it comes to trucks and trailers. The current max tow capacity of an F 150 is about 12,800 with a 1800 to 1900# payload. If you’re alone and don’t have much cargo then I think you tow a heavier gross weight trailer because you’ll never approach the gross weight of the trailer. If you have a 10,000# gross weight trailer with a tongue weight of 1,000#, you still have 800 to 900# of payload to play with. If you have a family of 5 with all the associated toys then you’re pushing the envelope and should definitely buy a 3/4 ton truck. If you’re a couple with a couple of lawn chairs in the bed, you’re probably fine with that max tow half ton truck. I definitely agree that payload should be considered before towing capacity which is figured with only one driver. I think it’s a good idea to go to a scale and weigh your setup. I plan to do that soon!

It's not like you are immune to wind with 3/4 ton or 1T. Sure it can handle little more wind than 1/2T but once the wind gets to 30mph + any high profile vehicle gets thrown around. In fact they close I80 across WY for empty semis at 45mph wind. Don't think you are immune with 3/4 or 1T.

What used to be 3/4 ton camper is no more with new generations of trucks like my 2022 f150 with 14,000lbs of tow capacity, the rule of thumb is to use 75% of tow capacity. That would be 10,500lbs

Our first trailer was a Kodiak 255 - great setup and it towed very well behind a (loaded) half-ton Ram, although it was a loaded crew cab with the 5.7 and 8-speed and max-tow gear ratio w/ airbags, not the much lighter SLT or the gas 6 they offer. We towed it all over the west - never an issue, never slouched in traffic or climbing mountains - Moab, Glacier, Yellowstone, hunting trips in Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona - Oregon, 4 trips to the Dakotas and Minnesota in the spring.. that thing went everywhere. The Kodiak was about 6500-6800 lbs, but I wouldn’t go any heavier than that. We also looked at smaller trailers, they didn’t meet the needs for the boon-docking we do. Kodiaks are a decent “tweener” option - not a big price tag, but better on the inside than the cheap stuff. I put the JD-recommended CRE 3000 suspension on it, solar, 1000 watt inverter, 2 generators in parallel, and Carlisle tires on it- towed great, worked well. I loved how the pickup leveled itself after hookup - just get it sort of close and the airbags dialed it.

I have a 2018 version of that Apex 300BHS he was showing. Having towed it with an ill-equipped 1500 series pickup I can certainly say you would want a 3/4 ton or a long wheelbase HDPP equipped F150. We encountered high wind one day and it was a white knuckle ride, first time I have ever experienced steering with the wind to go straight down the road. It was difficult driving conditions to say the least.

I seen a scary setup last weekend. Had a half ton truck or suv pulling about a 30ft travel trailer. I could tell it didn't have a weight distribution hitch. It was front high and the tongue of the trailer was almost touching the ground. They was running about 70mph on the highway in the opposite direction. I have been in the situation of pulling a 31ft travel trailer with a half ton suburban. Trailer gvw was 7100 lbs. I put coil over shocks to help with the weight and had the cheap harbor freight weight distribution without sway control. I got into a windy situation once and it got scary. I was only goin about 55 mph and just let off the gas and let it slow it's self down. I had to run about 35mph because of how windy it was. Decided after that I needed something larger to pull that camper.

I now pull with a 1988 Crew cab dually. My 2nd travel trailer was a foot shorter and a little bit lighter. I pulled it with my truck and then with my dad's 2009 ram 1500 big horn. Granted the newer truck had the better power band and more gears so it got up to speed better. But in any kind of wind it did the same thing my suburban did. At that point I decided I would never pull a camper with anything smaller than a dually. I know have a 5th wheel and love the way it pulls over a travel trailer.

The reason the smaller trailer was heavier was because the build is better. More optional equipment and features and higher quality materials. You can get a light weight 28 footer but paper thin walls, no insulation, small refrigerator amd stove. Low capacity water and waste tanks. Smaller beds with cheaper mattresses / foam. Straight forward reasons. Outdoor RV makes great bumper pull trailers but they weigh a good bit more because they make their own frames, insulate them for true below zero camping, real wood interiors. Actual mattresses, all stuff that adds to weight but they're teice the quality.

Poor Patrick is just hanging his head and nodding. ☹️ As long as your numbers are jiving and you're within your specs, there's no reason to not get the unit that meets your needs. Important factors are, stay within your payload on the door sticker. Stay within your fr/rr axle rating. Stay within the gross combined weight rating. Staying within these limits by itself means that the tow vehicle towing capacity isn't going to be what is advertised. And definitely properly adjust your weight distribution hitch. And cat scale often. Get the app.

@wsmcook
@wsmcook 3 года назад
Some people err on the cautious side and assume gvwr to be safe. It is safe but some people also forget that it is an extremely variable amount. On the flipside to what was said to the previous comment is that everyone tows at least their dry weight and only some travel at the trailers gvwr. Logically, that's irrefutable. Our truck is a 2019 Ram 1500 4x4, crew cab, 6'-4" bed, 5.7, 3.92...payload on the sticker is 1592 lbs, towing rating is 11,240 with a GCWR of 17,000 lbs. We tow a 22' travel trailer that has a 6400 lb GVWR. Honestly, I wouldn't want to tow anything bigger or heavier unless I upgraded to a 3/4 ton truck.

I feel like there are too many generalizations when it comes to half ton in 3/4 ton It totally depends on the individual configuration and how much you drive it.

What is the weight of a typical halfton vs the weight of a typical 3/4ton? Is the difference there what you use as a general rule to distinguish tail wagging the dog vs vice versa. An actual equation or rule of thumb here would be very useful.

@wsmcook 3 года назад
By those numbers and the fact that he bases 6000 pounds as a general limit for halftone towing should 8000 pounds be the limit for 3/4 tons. Mathematically that's 1000 pounds plus vehicle weight if we are being consistent.

Have you ever heard of friction snubbers? With the snubber installed, my motorhome handles sidewinds better with a 6000-pound enclosed car hauler than than it does deadheading.

Not sure why his buddy is in this video...lol? I agree with this guy for the most part. I like how he drills in payload which is critical. I love in CO and tow to WY so with the elevation and the high altitude, I always go straight to the 3/4 ton with diesel power.

It can pull 13k but that would be a flat bed type trailer with a low center of gravity. Plus payload is the biggest thing you look at. 13k with 15% tounge weight is 1950lb that’s over most trucks payload without the driver

Imagine TT start at unloaded weights of 5500lbs and under 28’ total to 8400 UVW and almost 37’...which plan are you looking at? And what F-150 do you have? I tow a 6000lb UVW with a Ram 1500 (33’11” total length) and it does a fine job. But I wouldn’t want to go over that weight (depends on your truck and trucks actual paylload capacity as well). “Loaded” our truck sits around 6700-6800. If we need to fill water that adds 385lbs.

Blah,Blah,Blah!!! I have a 2017 F-150 Ecobeast, and a 34 ft Passport lite, I have been trailer trucking with my setup for the last 6yrs, I've done several suspension upgrades including Rough country 3inch lift, and air bags, I have absolutely no problem hauling my rig around the country!!! I hate it when the "Nay Sayers" tell you what you can't do, especially when I know better, I've been a Truck driver for over thirty years, and refuse to sell my F-150, it's been super tuned, and pushes out 525 horsepower, with bigger turbos, 35x12.50 Yoko's! 💪

Hey guys new to the camper stuff and need some help. I have a 27 foot travel trailer with over all of 29 foot. It’s dry weight of 4,850 payload of 2,692 and hitch weight is 580. I’m pulling it with a 2015 Chevy Tahoe ltz and I can’t go above 60mph or I get super bad sway. Even with sway control hooked up. I looked at towing capacity of Tahoe and thought it would do just fine. What can I do to fix this ? Is this not the right size vehicle?
@ticopowell
@ticopowell 2 года назад
You need to look at how you load the trailer, too much or too little weight on the tongue is going to make trailer sway much worse. Is that 580 measured, or what the sticker says?

@@austintevis7304 that's probably empty, when it's full you should have it closer to 800lbs. You will want to weigh the Tahoe when empty and full, and with the trailer with it when full to know how much tongue weight you have, then adjust accordingly

That's pretty conservative advice. With a 18max tow I tow a 10000lb gvwr 5th wheel, and a 1200lb jetski behind it, upwards of a thousand miles per year through the nebraska sand hills...some will know how windy it can be there. I wouldn't recommend it to a newbie but it certainly is not unsafe except for the keyboard warriors who haven't towed their own ass out of their parents house.

5:32 You didn't really mention the axle location. It is pretty far back. Which means two things. 1. More weight on the truck. 2. Reduction of trailer twisting. Not sure that is enough. I would test drive this unit with the truck in question.

@SliderFury1

Wait, this dude is saying that a trailer with a GVWR of 6500 pounds is going to put 1700 pounds of tongue weight on the truck? That's just…not correct… I've seen slips from guys towing 7600lbs GVWR trailers that are close to fully loaded with less than 900lbs of tongue weight (about 12-13% of the loaded weight, which is standard). They're dialing in their WDH to get the proper spread. If you have 1700lbs of tongue weight off a 6500lbs GVWR trailer that's 25% of it's weight and you're doing it wrong.
