The ninth round of the 2001 F3000 International Series sees the championship return to Germany, this time Hockenhien (the old classic Hockenhien, not the new rubbish one). Sébastien Bourdais broke the stranglehold of the top three in the championship taking all the wins in this series at Silverstone. Would another of the runner be able to win, or would the wins revert back to one of the championship contenders? Ricardo Sperafico took the pole for this one, the first pole for a drivers outside the top three of the championship since Interlagos.
The front runner in this championship included Justin Wilson and Tomáš Enge driving for the Coca-Cola Nordic Racing, Mark Webber driving for Super Nova, with other front runner drivers including British F3 Champion Antônio Pizzonia, Mario Haberfeld, Giorgio Pantano, David Saelens, Patrick Friesacher, Bas Leinders and Sébastien Bourdais
