Commander George Duncan crashes his F9F Panther jet fighter into the US Navy Carrier Midway on July 23, 1951. Miraculously although the fuselage of the plane was destroyed, the cockpit completely detached and Commander Duncan escaped with minor injuries.

I served aboard the USS Ranger CV-61 1985 to 1988. I was an Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class (E4). Started below decks in weapons assembly (G2). Later moved to the G3 where I stood watch at the Bomb Farm. Never witnessed an incident like that one, but did see others. EA-6B lost power on approach, all four ejected "safely" (couple of broken bones as I recall). You can watch the video of "Atlas" bringing in his A-6 for a barricade trap under the expert guidance of "Bugs" here on RU-vid. I watched that from my berth. Seen a CH-46 Sea Knight crash into the sea during OnRep. No lives lost in any of those incidents.

My grandfather was on the midway when this happened he wasn't lying when he said it was just a blaze of fire

He was too low. I noticed that right away. My recommendation is that he would be a bit higher on any future landings.

Perhaps the carrier was just too high. They should lower it by at least 20 feet. It’s just science.

@@YourfriendlyneighborhoodChevy I have a friend who was a photographer in the military during the war. The size difference in equipment then and today is astonishing. I've read that the real limitation on making things smaller is that they have to be large enough for the owner to operate!

Those old WWII era phones did a good job of movie-making but it was super important you kept the film advance cranking at a very steady rate.

Guy walked away from a crash, he lived to learn from his mistakes. People make mistakes and the experience is priceless. Besides, I'd love to see you complete a manual landing on a moving aircraft carrier in a primitive jet by today's standards.
