A guy I know had a dowel pin that holds a timing chain guide onto the engine (FA20DIT) rip out, and his engine was destroyed. Theory is the rolling anti-lag put stress on the system. Any ideas how to prevent the pins from coming out?

I'll have a chat with Dennis and see what he thinks.

Great information, is this failure happening under boost? Or is it over.time?

Hey Enicinas, thanks for the question. I’ll check with Dennis and get back to you. Thanks, Daniel. (Edit: See answer below in thread)

Have you broken a timing chain before?

@@denstoj up to this point I have not had Amy issues. I have been NA for the most part. In the next couple of months we are pulling the old motor out and redoing the entire thing...this time we have decided to go with a power adder so things will be different.

Hey @Encinas, no worries. Great attitude towards learning! Ok, that's good to hear. At least you've got the biggest issue with the rockers sorted since installing our kit. Yes, boosting the engine will bring additional challenges. All a bit of extra excitement! Haven't had a chance to catch-up with Dennis yet. Keep me posted with your build. 👍

Hi mate, just come across your channel. I have just picked up a new manual BRZ (FA24) MY23 Can you tell me any info about the differences between the FA24 v FA20? I heard they beefed up some internal components. Full disclosure, I am a 60y/o Newcastle man who has no intention of turbocharging etc but may one day take it to the track for a play. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers mate.👍

Hey Iman, great to hear from you. Ah awesome, would love to check it out. Drop by the shop some time. Yes, in terms of the valvetrain, our understanding is the springs have been changed to a beehive design but the rockers are still not retained with a clip mechanism. Is it your daily?
@imanenigma3348
@imanenigma3348 Год назад
@@denstoj No mate, not my daily. Easy to get in and out Hilux, for that.😉 I'm guessing being it is NA it will only have cast pistons etc ? I thought the block and rods may have got a beef up, with the increase in displacement,? Will drop in one day for sure.
@denstoj
@denstoj Год назад
@Iman Engima I'm just past 60 and my 86 is pretty much a daily 🤣. Yes, being NA the pistons are just cast aluminium. Likely the same pistons in both the FA20 and FA24 with an increase in stroke but I'll have to investigate further. Looking forward to checking your BRZ out. Got any other questions? -Dennis.

Just to be clear, the ratchet mechanism is to keep the tensioner piston from coming out further, or to keep it from coming back in? I ask because I’m wondering what would keep the “fixer tube” from causing a rattle noise should the piston come out more (for whatever reason).
@denstoj
@denstoj Год назад
Hey @CJ Cantrell, The stock ratchet mechanism allows the tensioner to go out but not back in (1:18). The idea is to limit the amount the tensioner can return (move in) by adding a small stopper tube. I'll ask Dennis about what would happen if the piston moves out. Thanks, Dan.
@denstoj
@denstoj Год назад
Hey @CJ Cantrell, Dennis has explained to me that if set correctly, the piston would only move out after a long period of time where the chain is wearing (years and a lot of kms). The ratchet will operate as per normal so no rattle would occur. The intended use for this is for race purposes where engines would be rebuilt in a shorter time frame anyway. Let me know if you have any other questions.

@@denstoj I’m glad you mentioned race, because, I would like to build this to do some small SCCA type racing. I also need to daily it from time to time so it needs to do both. Thank you guys for the video and the information. I’m subscribing now.

@@cjcantrell80 Thanks. No problem at all. Are you having timing chain issues? How much power are you chasing?
@cjcantrell80
@cjcantrell80 Год назад
@@denstoj No timing chain issues, yet. Just bought the car with a little over 100,000 miles and have the famous fatal ticking from the rocker on the right bank. Figured whilst I’m replacing all of that I’d upgrade to the new geometry and get some stout parts. I’m only going to 350hp whilst it’s NA, but that’ll give me time to decide what (if any) power adders I want to go to. I’m new to the boxer engine and it’s dynamics so things like this video are very helpful. I mainly watched this video to PREVENT any future issues.
