The cross members under the top is what gives its strength regardless where it is 3/16 or 1/2 inch. You have a very good welding table. You're not too bad of a fabricator. I never cared to much for fabrication. I just like welding it all up. Stay safe Jermey.
Three suggested upgrades: 1) add shelf to bottom cross pieces; 2) add dust tray that slides under the top so all the dust from grinding and filing doesn’t rain down on whatever is on the bottom shelf; 3) make a plywood top that fits over the top of the table for woodworking use.
