Fabio Fognini was given a code violation by umpire Nacho Forcadell for spitting on the court. Fognini believes the violation was absurd. He constantly continues to butt heads with Forcadell throughout the intense match over line calls and time violations.

A spit is disgusting but compare to hockey you have 20 guys constantly spitting all over the bench zipping water and spitting it out, it's infinitesimal. That's why so many people contracted Covid in these sports.

Umpire is following the rules but in practice you'd never do this unless you dislike the player. You'd always give him an informal verbal warning first but it is a courtesy not a rule. No chance in hell that the umpire intervenes like that if it's Fed/Nad/Djok in either situation. That's my opinion as a fellow umpire.

The ATP lacks a concise set of rules to help umpires hold in check the lot of ill-educated, unsportsmanlike brats who abund in the game, Fognini being just one of the most eminent examples. Well, ATP lacks many other things too (e.g. a common sense clothing etiquette) to do good service to the game. Because it just services itself.

In a sport setting it's the norm though, sometimes for a number of reasons you can have a lot of saliva build up or you can also have the snot knocked out of you. Especially in colder climates.
