Fable the Raven | Hidden Camera | Raven talking and singing to herself 

This makes me wonder if ravens aren't the source of some ghost stories. Imagine, especially a few hundred years ago, a raven perched outside some poor soul's window muttering strange things

There is a Raven in my yard that does a perfect phone ringing. I can't imagine how many times she got me to run into the house to grab the phone. When I return outside she laughs histarically!

This bird is showing two very impressive capabilities, memory and vocalisation. She obviously remembers the sound of the human noises very well, and is trying to reproduce them. Wow!

I used to talk to the magpies and ravens in alaska as a little kid and they talked back to me. No one ever believed me though. Good to know 20 years later I'm not actually insane.. But had some very clever birb friends.

She's clearly making fun of your accent behind your back, you'll need to address this before she starts talking to your friends about you.

It amazes me how clear and accurate birds can imitate human language and sounds despite not having teeth or lips.

I remember being a little girl, and going into a pet shop. The parrot at the door immediately said. "Hi, pretty girl! How are you?" As a kid who didn't get noticed or talked to a lot....I was hooked. LOL Yes, parrots are special. I plan on timing my retirement to adopt an older rescue parrot. (Yes I know they live longer than people, hence the timing) They take a LOT of care, patience and constant interaction. They are worth it. Taught a chicken to play scales on a piano and do card tricks. I'm READY!

The stick is actually a wand and she's been trying to turn herself back into a human.

When an introvert is trying to practice how to say hi to people and then would react wow and oh.

There’s a crow in my neighborhood that can perfectly imitate a cat. I was outside in the hammock one day reading. Heard a cat, looked around and saw nothing. After another time or two, spotted the crow in one of the trees making the sounds. I have indoor cats that are always at the windows or sliding doors. Felt like the crow was messing with me. 😂

I had to laugh I played fable talking to my umbrella cockatoo and he said “ who’s that ?” “ What a good boy ! “ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️

I wish I was this dedicated to learning another language.

Imagine you do a cartwheel in the middle of a forest and nobody's there to see it, but you hear "Wow!!"

My daughter lives on the west coast of Canada and one day while she was sitting alone on a beach a raven came down to talk to her and brought her shiny rocks and shells.

The thing that blows my mind is that Fable doesn’t simply talk, she IMITATES your voice. She is playing trying to get the right tone and vocal pitch to sound like you.

Me: gets annoyed when the kids repeat mom mom mom three or four times. Also me: watches a raven say wow wow wow dozens of times for several minutes

This is amazing - some of your subtitles say “nonsense” but I am actually hearing her say colloquialisms like “Wots that there” and “wot you got there” and even “your a lil’bit sill-eh” in an almost cockneyed tone lol She does the “muah” air kiss sound and says “Kith!Kith?” I imagine the letter S is a challenge for her.

Sure, when a raven is talking to itself it's cute & interesting but when I do it, it's creepy & weird.

I can't help but imagine how ancient people would have reacted to hearing ravens mimicking human voices. No doubt it contributed to many a superstition.

It is so precious how she starts practicing a word, then adjusts her tone to sound more like you!

My favorite thing about crow's mimicry isn't necessarily just the fact that they can learn to repeat words from humans, but on top of it they also do their best to imitate the voice of the person they learnt it from, and also when they learn like... artificial/mechanical sounds instead of words/voices. It's just so impressive the depth of detail they can reach

I never knew Ravens talked until I went to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary...heard someone keep yelling "Henry! Henry where are you!" One of the workers pointed out it was a Raven and Henry was the name of a volunteer there :)

Honestly, she's so good at doing speech, I'm actually conflicted about watching her on a hidden camera without her consent.

I once volunteered in a bird sanctuary where they kept a Jackdaw, simply named Jack. Jack had previously lived in a pub, often hanging around indoors interacting with the patrons, up until he was taken away for a mix of health&safety/animal welfare reasons. Either way, he learned exactly two phrases during his days in the pub, the two things he was addressed with most often whilst there. "Hello", and "Fuck off". He'd repeat these two greetings to anyone that he met, with no particular pattern to it. Always made for hilarious (if slightly less "family friendly") moments with guests to the sanctuary. Eg, saying hello to the first three people, and telling the last to fuck off. Never failed to amuse. I was told how he once briefly escaped his enclosure, and flew to sit in a bush beside the road. Gave an elderly woman on her bicycle quite a surprise when a strange voice repeatedly told her to "Fuck off fuck off fuck off" from just beside her as she passed. She came into the sanctuary to inform/ask the staff about a particularly rude bird.

A crow that I helped when it was hurt a few years ago leaves presents for us on our porch, usually blue things like a baby sock or some random party balloon things. He also follows me sometimes when I walk my dog. He flies ahead and waits for me on a fence. Then I walk ahead for a bit and he flies ahead again :) They have crow kids now and it's amazing that the crow kids are not afraid of me and my dog. I love Corvids. I will educate people that it's not Covid-19.

She is showing an amazing range of inflection in each series of words she practices. She is saying something slightly different with each repetition of the word, and it seems deliberate. This is fascinating to watch and hear.

This is so funny because in the evening when I'm alone in my room I practice my raven noises...

When we listen to Fable talking 'nonsense' I think it's worth remembering that a lot of the sounds humans make in conversation are not actually words. They have tonal meaning - for instance, we make particular sounds to query something, to comfort somebody or to express interest. There are times here when Fable seems to be practising tone.

It sounds like she says "what's that?" When she hears the trucks driving by. What a smart girl!

By mimicking your voice it's like she draws comfort from it too - like you're there with her. The likeness is so remarkable.

She imitates unintentional sounds too, interestingly - breath and lip sounds. Artificial intelligence voices could stand to learn from that.

I remember hearing once that speaking when no one is around to hear is actually a significant marker of intellectual develipment in children. It shows a deliberate atempt to understand and explore language without anykind of immediate reward or feedback.

My favorite are all the "Hi Fable"s and the laughing. However, if I was walking through the woods and suddenly heard a Raven laughing it would be some Edgar Allen Poe stuff right there and I would wet myself.

This is amazing ! We had a raven called "Jakob" (although it was a female, which the previous owner apparently didn't know) in our zoo in Munich who absolutely loved to talk to the visitors. She would put on a huge show as soon as enough people had gathered and would (most likely deliberate) attract said audience by repeating the word "scheiße" ("shit") until people starting paying attention to her and coming closer.

Sounds like she's practising a lot of other phrases you say around her but hasn't yet finessed them. Incredible bird!

A neighbour I had a few years ago (around 2009 or so), lived in an old decrepit house just a few clicks from where I lived. When he passed away, his daughter came to pick up his belongings, and she could have sworn that she heard his voice from outside, saying things that she remembered from previous phone conversations with him. So she reported the house as haunted. Turns out however, that a raven couple had set up a nest nearby, during the time he had lived there and so they had heard him out in the yard when he had spoken on his cell with her. They had just learned to mimic him.

Those improvised songs also show she has a clear sense of rhythm. She's keeping a consistent tempo on songs that haven't been taught to her but she's made up herself. That's quite amazing.

I used to have a blackbird in my area who heard me whistling to my music over and gradually we would whistle at eachother with me making my call similar to his. For 3 ish years this happened. Hed come and jump about on the grass or trees and get whistling with me. He brought his chicks and mrs when he could and theyd all whistle with their dad whistling with me. So cute. I adore birds. This ones a trip!

It's interesting when she just makes up words, but they have the same cadence and inflections as English does. It's probably much like what English sounds like to people who don't speak the language.

I've heard plenty of birds mimic sounds exactly, but that's the first time I've ever heard a bird take a sound and play with it like that. It actually gave me goosebumps, so eerie and fascinating

When she says "Hello" she has such a lovely posh accent! It's like being chatted up by a duchess.

I was once in the car park at Durdle Door in Dorset and heard some kids playing with a toy machine-gun and saying "bang!" "bang!" - except when I looked there were no kids, just a rook next to the car making the sounds. It was looking at me and so I said "hello" and it started saying hello back, over and over, just like Fable does here.

I will always love seeing birds do their happy little skipping and playing around, You see some very magical interactions between birds when you watch them play around enough.

You can hear her tweaking her pronunciation each time, obvious when it's words we know, but I assume their own native noises have just as much nuance

the fact that you've been teaching her to say "wow" and she says it so much on her own makes me wonder if she practices alone so she can say it better around you, just a theory but she might want to impress you

The "nonsense conversation" is what we sound like to her. Kind of like when we mimic another language we probably aren't saying anything but we're mimicking the sounds that we often associate with that other language. We'll make up words or nonsense conversation in our mimicking of other languages, too.

I could have sworn early in the video she said “nice weather” . She is amazing! It’s interesting that she seems to be far more interested in mimicking humans instead of the other birds heard in the background. To me, that seems to show the degree of relationship between the 2 of you.

I just love when she sings to herself. Like someone pottering about the house feeling happy. And it is just amazing how she tries out all these different intonations to the words she says. It doesn’t sound like she is purely copying a human sound but as if she is trying to give it different emphases and emotions.

I feed a pair of ravens and about 30 crows daily in my backyard in San Francisco. They are definitely talkers. One used to mimic ‘good morning’ quite often. The pair of ravens that come let me approach within inches. Majestic.
