Throughout history, Fabriano has been a premier name in paper-making with a reputation for quality, style, and excellence. In my 3-part series, I explore three contemporary Fabriano products and why that reputation is assured.
In this video, the third of the three, I share my purchase of Fabriano's Vergatone Notebook, named after the vergato or "laid" treatment of the books outside paper cover.

Thanks Mark, this is great. I love Fabriano paper ! It's one of a handful of watercolour paper producers that use no animal gelatin in their sizing so with my chemical sensitivities I can use it with no fear of a reaction. Besides, it's wonderful paper. The book is beautiful and demonstrates the pride of workmanship Fabriano has. I love that you mentioned how fresh it smells, then went on to give us a vicarious but full sensory experience. Your drawing was sweet! Patricia

It's great to see you here, Patricia! I hope you are doing well and surviving the pandemic in style! lol! I understand the chemical sensitivities as it took me two decades to figure out I have a skin reaction to cardboard. It may be related to dust mites and their waste, but the dermatologist couldn't be sure. So now, when I handle boxes, I have to wash right away or wear gloves. So weird. Thanks for checking this video out and your lovely words! Just saw that you've got recent videos. Looking forward to checking them out! ~ Mark

Yay! I'm so glad another fellow RU-vidr found this amazing sketchbook. I picked mine up at the Fabriano boutique in the Munich Airport shop (remember airport??) a year ago and am obsessed with it. Cult pens carry this book (I, alongside my viewers may have sold out their stock a couple of times...) and they shipped before Brexit for free over 70£, so if that's still the case, I'd stock up on these from their website. Thanks for the beautiful review, I hope more people will discover this sketchbook ❤️

Lol writing as I'm watching. The magic is in the paper you say. I've spoken about this in my videos numerous times saying this paper is some crazy Fabriano paper voodoo and it's really special. Thanks for the slightly more scientific explanation 😂

This is so tempting to buy! I’m always on a search for a great watercolor sketchbook! When you talked about sniffing and spidey senses, you made me think of my days working at Borders. There was a guy who would come in almost every Tuesday when we got the new magazines so he could smell them! 😂
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 3 года назад
LOL!! I wouldn't be shocked to find out that guy was me! lol! This sketchbook is tricky, though, because it's not like 100% cotton. It's got a wholly unique absorption and way of "accepting" a medium, that's not like other papers. I need to work with it to really understand it. Love how it holds color, though. A really good, tough paper!

Glad you said dip pen toward the end. I wondered why you weren’t using one, but that will come. I am afraid that if I invested in something like these I would just look at them and never get started 😊 thanks for the video, some🐇 cares. Boy am I ready for spring💐

I wanted to use the dip pen, but it seemed too obvious, Essie Tangle. I thought I'd try to demonstrate using items more likely to be used by all artists, not just my specific habits. I'm actually planning to change my home studio significantly. I've out-grown my converted crawl space. lol! I'd like to have different stations for different work. Not huge or anything, but maybe within reach of my office chair. I dunno yet. And yes, I do the same thing. I buy really nice gear and just stare at it for months. Why? Perhaps I'm just waiting for Spring, as well, because this has been a long cold winter and I'm ready to be outside again. A lot! lol! Hoping all is well on your end! Thank you, too, Made by Dawn! I'm thrilled you enjoyed this one and I'm grateful for your kind feedback. As for the feeling of the book, it's very light yet feels very strong. You can tell right away it's well-made. The deep grooves of the orange cover paper is so unique to this book, that comparing it to other books is frivolous. While it's obviously not the same, imagine holding a freshly shucked ear of corn in your hand. The fresh, bumpy feel of each row gives a feeling unlike any other vegetable. It's satisfying and good. You can feel the energy within the ear of corn that grew it until that point when it was picked. This book has that same feeling. The neat, orderly grooves - firm to the touch, yet soft like a well-treated paper would be. It feels like running your hand over tree bark, but softer. A very organic experience.

Hi sailorfan86 and thank you for checking in on this one! Very kind of you to ask! It is a wonderful sketchbook, but unfortunately, it's one of those books that I'm "afraid" to use. lol!! Because a lot of my sketches are done on the fly, I wanted to reserve this one for more finished work. I've done several paintings in it, but not to the degree I had planned on. I think, because of your question, I will have to bring it to the forefront and get back into it again. Etchr sketchbooks have become my current favorite, so that's what I've been using more. Thank you again and hoping all is well on your end! Cheers! Mark

@@MDCampbell hey can you do me a favor? So I just received my 2 vergatone notebooks yesterday and painted on them for the first time today after receiving a set of vintage watercolors from the 1800s 😁 and I am loving the paper...but I noticed something very peculiar. Holding my phone's flashlight to the paper and moving it back and forth I noticed the light was catching reflections off little tiny particles randomly, like very fine mica powder. I notice it on multiple pages and also on the paint I just put down, which for sure doesn't have mics powder in it, plus it's catching reflections on the blank papers. Can you see if you can catch any reflections and notice any tiny particles in your paper? Thanks! I just uploaded a short clip on my channel showing what I'm talking about, it's on every page. Only noticable with a flashlight and looking really carefully
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 3 года назад
@@notmetagaming I just examined my whole book and didn't see any reflective particles, at all. Weird. Very weird. I tried it in both dark and light, too, but no result. I wonder what it is?
@notmetagaming
@notmetagaming 3 года назад
@@MDCampbell I have no idea. Some of the pages were also stained with a weird red stain, which is what I initially noticed and after showing them over at cult pens they decided they would replace both books. I haven't let them know about the particles yet, I should email them and let them know about those as well. The strangest part is I ordered the small and medium size, and both books have the small reflective particles randomly on every page in both books it's so strange
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 3 года назад
@@notmetagaming I'm very happy to hear they will replace them. It's extremely strange, but something worth noting and seeing if others have the same issue. Definitely a deal-breaker, especially with the staining! That's not acceptable. I'm glad you shared this with me. Thank you!

I haven't seen much about the Vergatone notebook, outside of Irit Landgraf's channel. I am OBSESSED with the paper in this. I'm like you and I really enjoy this book, as well. I have not seen the paper in this book sold in sheets or in other books, or even anything close to it. The pulp is really fine and produces some fabulous results. I'm a big fan of their hot press papers mostly because I love the way I can blend on them. But this paper is unique. I’m excited to see this is actually very affordable for the quality here in England! £28 delivered from one of my go to online shops. But I can’t find anywhere that has an indication of gsm for this notebook - Mark, may I ask if you can describe what gsm you think it is? Although it’s affordable for the quality I would like to have a better idea of thickness as I really do love using wet media and doing so on both sides of the page. Many thanks in advance!

I would say 210-230 gsm, but similarly to khadi paper it takes more washes than you would expect from thickness
