Thank you very much for this explanation Lauren. I once read an article warning against using quilting cotton fabric for dressmaking but you've clarified that pattern choice makes all the difference.

This was brilliant.A lot of interesting information but the way you explain it makes it so easy to listen to and understand.I loved the way you linked it to patterns and showed yourself wearing your garments. I can't wait for the next one.

Thanks so much for this video. I’m a quilter and wanting to start doing some dressmaking so I need all the help I can get. That’s the main problem I’m having right now is trying to decipher what fabrics to use for each pattern because the fabric recommendations are so generic. I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos in the series 😊

Hello Lauren Thanks.It will be useful also to classify cotton fabrics as Light,medium and thick And as 100%cotton,cotton mixed with linen, Cotton mixed with polyester Cotton mixed with Spandex Cotton mixed with Viscose For the environmentally conscious dress makers. You also forgot to tell that you have sewing classes in your shop!!! All the best. Will visit your shop soon.

Thank you so much Lauren for taking the time to explain the different terms. I don't have many bricks and mortar fabric shops near me so have to buy online and therefore unfortunately can't feel the fabrics so these videos will be a great help. X

The stitch sisters have done a video like this but I love that you are doing it, I like how you show garments that have been made using the fabric and close ups of the weave of the fabrics also helps. Am trying to watch as many of these kind of videos as I can because where I buy my fabrics, they don't have the fabric information, i have to just figure it out on my own or order online. Its especially hard with blends coz as far as I know you cant physically identify them unless you do like a burn test. Do you sell swatches?
@LaurenGuthrieGhani
@LaurenGuthrieGhani 5 лет назад
Hello, yeh we do sell swatches, here is the link of how to order them online. As we sell fabrics by the 10cm, some people order that amount as a swatch as that gives a better indication of drape of the fabric too. guthrie-ghani.co.uk/shop/postage-for-swatches

I've been looking everywhere for something like this. Thank you for the wealth of information. One question: One fabric I have come across often is Kona Cotton or Broadcloth. What's your opinion on this? Is there another term or comparable to Medium Weight/Quilting Cotton?
@LaurenGuthrieGhani
@LaurenGuthrieGhani 4 года назад
Hello, from what I know Kona cotton is a brand name for a range of cotton fabrics. As we don't stock it in the shop I'm not overly familiar with the feel of it.

Great video. Can you give us the needle size best for each fabric, if its not too much trouble.
@LaurenGuthrieGhani
@LaurenGuthrieGhani 5 лет назад
Hi Michelle, for all the ones I mentioned a size 80 should be fine. Perhaps you could go to a 70 for the lighter weight ones, the lawns and voiles but as long as the needle is new (and sharp) I find an 80 is a really good all rounder size.

Newbie sewer here....i want to make vintage clothing, mostly 1800-1810, Edwardian, and 40s. I cannot do wool or silk so cotton is my 1st choice. Can you recommend the best fabric for these garments?

Really informative thank you. Could you tell me why some cotton ( not purchased from you ) forms creases like white marks on the fabric when I first wash it? I follow the care instructions and the marks don't come out of the fabric so it is ruined, Julie
@LaurenGuthrieGhani
@LaurenGuthrieGhani 5 лет назад
Hi Julie, it could be to do with the quality of the dye on the fabric an how how well (or not) it has been fixed onto the fabric. Perhaps when you wash it some of the dye is getting rubbed off in parts and that is what is creating the white marks. Just an idea, its hard to say for sure without seeing the fabric :)

Thank you very much for the cotton fabric lesson. 😀 Greatly appreciated. 😘 Question, what is the difference between a Cotton Twill and a Cotton Drill fabric? Other then being both bottom weight fabrics.
@LaurenGuthrieGhani
@LaurenGuthrieGhani 5 лет назад
drill is a type of twill. Twill is kind of an umbrella term that covers various fabrics that have that diagonal weave to them, so gaberdine is a type of twill as well :)
