FABRICATED LAND (How ideas create landscapes and new work)

Photography defined the view of the Scottish landscapes over the last two centuries, one that has remained frozen in time.
This short film reveals the process behind the creation of photographic textiles or 'photoweaves' to reimagine the Scottish land and its history. From drones to printing, the creative process carries a sense of expectation and doubts with the risks of innovating.
Dodds' body of work Fabricated Land is a series of photographic prints, hand-cut and woven, to consider specific viewpoints and the frameworks we place on those landscapes. In Scotland, the land’s identity is interpreted through a textile lens, that of tweed and textile. The modern nation itself was dependent on that industry and the values of landscape placed on it by writers, poets and artists. This work is a continuation of that tradition.

Just came across your very interesting and creative video, Kieran. It‘s a pity that the replanting isn‘t in the forms you‘re making. Planting in rows is fine, if the timber is to be harvested, but certainly does not make for a natural woodland look. I have a similar system planted opposite my home in Australia. The area was originally grazing land, then pines were planted, in rows, and these burnt in a bushfire. Native Eucalyptus trees were then planted, again in rows. I can still see the rows, 20 years later. A woodland is usually mixed. So your creativeness has in a way, made it more of a woodland and I love the way you have sliced all those strips to make it so.🇦🇺

Trish, thank you for observing and writing this. I agree the lines are incongrous for a rewilded site. Humans like lines, nature is more squiggly. An industrial wilding is odd but I think the idea is to give that the initial structure is filled with the undergrowth, and future seedlings will shape a more diverse woodland, along with thinning by foresters. Not all trees will survive either so that will also break the grid. But your point is one that struck me the first moment I set eyes on it. As human-made as the commercial plantations nearby. My work is an imagining of how it may turn out in the complex “mess” of natural woodland.
