When you had it slit, it was a better bend because the other metal around the tubing kept it in place. When he bent it without the otherside, it causes the edges to buckle, and when you hammer the buckle you are actually shrinking it again and causing it to unbend. I know it was more grinding and more material lost but it was a better overall bend.

An idea for you! Take about 1 foot of 2x10 for each end drill 3 holes 1 inch, 2 about 4 inches apart on bottom and center 1 about 2 inches above those on each board. Screw them to a solid table, and take some 1 inch rebar thru both boards! Then you can use it for a pipe bender in the shop!! Have a happy Thanksgiving all of you!!!

Chad is a man who would have spent his life at school being told he was (dumb, lazy, never make anything of himself etc,etc.) by teachers who never took the time to encourage his amazing talents. How many people can draw a straight line using the edge of the material as a guide ? Not many if any. How many of his teachers took the time to discover his amazing design talents, his practical skills. Every episode we are treated to an extraordinary array of skills and folksy wisdom. What’s not to like about this man and his partner on the camera Jolene, who often offers simple solutions to issues that unfold during production. Excellent program!

Chad I've bent square tubing as well as round tubing by laying it on the garage floor, blocking up one end and reversing over it with the back wheel of my car, sounds really dodgy but it will work on most applications where you need a slight curve in something, the higher you block it up the greater the curve you will get.
@rodjames2

I like what you said Chad that life is the test then the learning comes after. I don't want anyone to misunderstand but there are commercial welders that are no doubt better welders but they only deal in straight cuts and welds. I consider you Chad a metal artist who also welds! Those hand made side stakes are sculpture! Keep using your creative brain, eye and tongue Chad this is one nice truck.

I've never commented on any of your videos I think before but I will comment on this one I really like it if you look at those side braces that you've made with the curve on them for the outside of the pickup truck box it's actually the reverse image of the back side of the cab where it meets the roof line somewhat where it goes up and then curves towards the cab so I guess what I'm trying to say is it actually meets or bands with the flow of the body at the angles you need to have things match up and it's going to look very old and original I think you're an absolute genius in a damn good builder one of the best I've seen from making something from nothing and making something something love your videos

If anyone wants to see how the Plymouth pickup could look when complete. Just click "37 Plymouth PT-50 Pickup". PT stood for Plymouth Truck. Chad's is a '35. Plymouth only made Sedan-Delivery commercial vehicles in '35 & '36. But the '37 Plymouth PT-50 pickup is pretty much the same. It uses the Plymouth car front but adds a Dodge truck box. Of course, Chad & Jolene's is awesome because they did it themselves.

The other way to say that is: "The experience comes first and the lessons come later". You should never feel bad about making a misstep. You are building the truck without a rendering, which is how most of the other guys do it. All of the design is in your imagination, so as you translate an idea into reality you're going to find a better way to skin the cat as you repeat the process. I continue to be so impressed with the work that both you and Jolene do. This is truly "cinema ve'rite'. You allow us to see the process warts and all. Thank you.
