I was there then and have loads of photos... it was not rare to have a camera... it's the electronics capital of the world then for tourists and duty free to boot! The shop displays of stereos, electronics, appliances, jewellery, clothing was astounding and block after block, mall after mall. So unique to HK and no where in the world. The footage here may make it seem quaint but it was a pretty modern metropolis even then.

I lived there from 1976-1978 and people with cameras were everywhere

My father had a standard 8 cine camera that took colour film but no sound. We were there from 1960 to1963 dad had job in kowloon

It 's either in 1978 or 1979. At 7:23, we can see the development site of Aberdeen Centre, which was constructed between 1978 and 1979. I think most probably 1978.

At 10:33, the cylinder-shape building is Hopewell Centre, its construction completed in 1980. At 10:45, left hand side, you can see the Old Hong Kong Club, a colonial style building demolished in June 1981. So this film was between 1980-mid 1981. Mike, you witnessed the last days of this famous old building.

Yes, to further reinforce the dates, the Prince of Wales building is featured on the waterfront at Tamar, which was the British Forces Far East HQ and is now the PLA headquarters, and was completed in 1979. Thank you for sharing this.

MichaelRogge 9:24 The old Hongkong Shanghai Bank Building is still there, The current building construction started in 1983. 10:13 caught a glimpse of the Prince of Wales Building in Timar Naval Base at Harcourt Road which was completed in 1979. So the film should be taken around 1979-1983.

Another proof of this film shot in late 1970s is that at 9:15 to 9:23, you can see the third generation of the HSBC Building. It was torn down after 1978: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSBC_Building_(Hong_Kong)

By looking at the old buses, you can tell this film was taken in the early 80s

Our family left in 1977. In the video, Exchange Square is not constructed, you can spot the Prince of Wales building and Hopewell Centre whether it was completed or not, Repulse Bay features can give us a hint which year it was.
