With the lathe gap out on our Clausing Lathe, we have a 29-inch face plate we can use on rings and things. We took on a project for one of our customers that called for just that need, so I share my use of machining all side of a torched-out ring with you.

I noticed what I think is an Enco sticker on that green cabinet behind you. When I started many years ago I couldn't afford the best stuff so I bought quite a lot from Enco. Lot of sub brands and import stuff but I got by with it and did a lot of work with it till I could do better. Now 36 years later and retired except for my little shop at home I still have some of that stuff. I found the first set of 6 inch calipers and micrometer I bought when I went to work for the Boeing company. I took care of them and they still work and give accurate numbers. They still had the calibration stickers on them with the Boeing logo. That seems a lifetime ago...

Years gone by in ship repair on large Pitsburg lathe the face plate got lots of use ,now in my smaller shop just had to use my face plate recently to machine a large steel pulley very useful no other way of swinging it. 40+ years later I still get a great deal of satisfaction turning. Great work Keith you know the tricks.👍p.s. need to buy a large guesstimator to measure the o.d.!

Our Machine Shop instructor in Jr College (I was starting my ASMET, later went on to BSMET) was a crusty retired Navy Machinist. First day of class he told us the only way we'd get an "A+" was if we could do it better than HE could! I got an "A" on every project! He taught us how to "read" the chips like you did just before the 8:00 mark. When they "look right" you know your speeds and feeds are right!

Really like doing face plate work although jobs now seem few and far between. Last one involved mounting an angle plate onto the face plate to machine an odd shaped component. Doing this involved mounting balance weights which all ads to the fun and the challenge. To the arm chair machinists out there using jaws to grip a ring even very lightly will distort it and as Keith points out it can make the ring sing, both actually. Keith, the sound of engagement and disengagement of the feed reminds me of my apprenticeship days using Colchester Student lathes ( the Clausing being a Colchester re.badge for the US market) Been watching your vids ( even though I do machining as a day job ) for years now. I think that we both had more hair back then and it was a different colour. Thumbs up as usual.

You have classic lathe well built machine. When I was apprentice I use to make machine parts for the US Army during the Vietnam era on the next size smaller lathe. It also had Tracer attachment, Its incredible its still have travel dial. Then the went company to a H.E.S. Tracer Lathe. Soon after the company went to CNC. I rather work with manual machines than CNC. Manual takes skill. CNC is mundane production work. Spent 12 years on CNC and the rest of my remaining of 48 year career of manual lathes & Bridgeports.

It seems that if ackthe ring wasn't flat to start with, clamping it to the faceplate would force it flat. After turning and releasing the clamps it would spring back to being not flat again. In this case I suppose when it's bolted up a slight warp won't matter.

Hi Keith, Haven't been here for a while, you are still living in Massachusetts...? Anyway I turned similar rings once upon a time, years ago. The finish ring (about 1 meter diameter) had a series around of threaded holes. We drilled and tapped the holes first, then I made a fixture so I could bolted the rings from undernith. Then I could turn the top plane, in and outside diameter in one set! Before it was a hell on earth :-).

Great stuff. Very helpful seeing solutions to not being able to machine surfaces in one pass. I need to buy some more chucks/faceplates as at the moment I only have one, a decent four jaw but the prices for decent chucks is more than i paid for the lathe. (though that was a steal DSG 13/30) good tooling is so expensive.

A sacrificial face plate. Why not? You don't use it that offen. Maybe a shim or a complete ring shaped sheet under the part and clamps? Than you can turn the part without hitting the faceplate. As an additional idea. Your plasma or water cutter (too small for this job I think but segments could work) makes it in a whiffy. Thank you Keith! I can see and feel you're a happy trooper at this moment. I hope this can continue to the end. Thank you for sharing al your knowledge and way of live with us. Get it done and stay safe. Hi Keith, That is a nice big face plate. Would be a bit of a gut buster to put on without your gantry. I made something similar about 25 years ago for a motor to gearbox in a boat, it was in aluminium. There were bolt holes for the back of the motor but they were not all equally spaced, one was out of position for some unknown reason but the guy I did it for hadn't noticed, and I drilled them to a set pattern so he had to redrill one on site to get the last bolt in position. I like your tip on the blocks when reversing the ring, but I would have moved them further apart on the philosophy of more even distribution. Great video as always. Regards Dennis.

to have done some rings for conversions, I know that a job that seems basic, there is many fool traps, this is worse when you start from a plate that have been rough cut with an oxy fuel torch. very good job on that ring, i presume that the axis of the engine and driven component is guarenteed by a register on the engine block and the driven component, typically SAE style bellhousing. very good video.

@billdoodson4232
@billdoodson4232 Год назад
I would actually call it a pipe tape, as normally it would be used by pipe fitters to check the outside diameter of a pipe, it gets hard to tell sometimes when there is a mess of pipes running around plant. As it's measuring a circumference it is simply divided by pi to give the diameter.

"Ain't no flies on that!" Adapter plates always have a interesting story...can you say "Ford-Cummins"? This job made me wonder if the stock was cut with a "water-jet" or possibly a plasma torch that is submersed in water? Reason being: the ring showed little heat warpage. CAL-OSHA dictates that large plasma cutting be done under water to capture the airborne Hexa-valent-Chrome....esta no’bueno! Large water projects (MWD, LA County DWP...) cut huge pieces of material... Gota have a monster filtration unit or continuous centrfuge to handle the amount of debris that a plasma torch produces; i would think. Or it could have been lopped off a pipe? Just yapping... But, great camera work Keith.

Well in the old days when I was learning and had one job at a time given to me, yes a lot of time was used in anticipating possible issues and stuff like that, after you gain experience in the machines you operate, you see a freedom to go start another project / machine or two while that one long cut operation is going on, because other wise boredom set in or another thought, you can step up your own shop rate by what you can get done in double shuffle! If you keep busy your not waiting for anything! just my outlook on that! Cheers, Keith

In math, Duodecimal & Hexadecimal mixed(Base 12 & Base 16) Good practice, but in the machine shop, conversion charts exist for the ease of calculation for most geometries encountered(or if you're a lazy bookworm like me) Need the reference material anyway. Unless you subscribe to standards institute sites you must search for well priced info. Reference libraries are expensive new.
