Transcript
Hello, I'm Marilyn Hellman and I'm in my shop in Naples, Florida on Fifth Avenue. We're going to talk about face shapes and necklines. By popular demand we brought back our face shape board and we're going to start out with the oval face because that's the most common and probably the easiest. You never have to worry about this face shape and it goes with turtlenecks, scoop neck lines, and V-necklines. The next face is oblong. With Oblong, you're going to want to emphasize horizontal lines. You should stay from turtlenecks but you can adjust that with jewelry or scarves, and even hairdos. Also, strong horizontal lines really here, esp strapless. You're all sitting there saying what are we going to do about our arms? We have these taffeta jackets, all kinds of different colors and look how pretty this is. There's a lot of things you can do with them. Here again, strong horizontal lines, sometimes it can be in the pattern or the textile that helps, so it's not just the neckline itself. Also, the pattern that's on the dress or blouse will help you. This is the triangle face and I have to tell you this was really kind of one of my favorite faces because I love the kinds of collar configurations that you can do with it. One of them is the umpire and what you're trying to do when you look at the umpire collar is you're trying to fill out in the jaw line down around here to kind of frame the bottom of your face. When you're starting to look at softening things up, you want to make sure that the colors are up in the back. I want to talk to you a little about ruffles, a lot of people think they can't wear ruffles because of their bust size; ruffles can change depending on the width or the length of them, so try a ruffle bust before you give it up. Okay, you didn't think we were to get by without a white blouse but as you can see, when you do some of these bigger collars on the white blouses and you bring them up, see how pretty this can be to fill out the lower part of the chin, that's nice and this is even better with a Marilyn scarf; all of these are really good with the triangle and it has a real regal look. The key thing about round shaped faces is not to wear round necks. With a neckline closer to the neck, we put in a piece of jewelry, that did a really strong V. If you're going to do a V-neck, you definitely emphasize it with a pendant, not something round, that's the key for this. You will be affected by the length of your neck, so the longer your neck, easier it is. Turtlenecks I would stay away from on this and anything like that, just to keep the stuff away from your face. The square face is interesting because it's sort of the opposite of the triangle face, you've got all of this width down here so now we don't want umpire at all. We don't want to stress this part of the angling, what we're looking for is turtlenecks but not too terribly high, more of a modified cowl. Basically stay away from those sort of umpires or any horizontals that are really close to the jawline. There's a couple of points I want to make here about face shapes, first of all, some people can be like two face shapes depending on what their hairdos are, depending on where there eye placement are done and if you want to really test that, you can just go online and put in an actor or an actress and you can see that she will come up under more than one face shape. So, I don't want you to think because you have one particular face shape, that it's set in stone.
The other one too is, there's a lot of things you can do if you want to wear a neckline that's a little higher, you can do a really strong piece of jewelry because the eye of the individual looking at you is going to see all this beautiful color in the V-neck. You can also do this with rounded things too when you're wearing V-neck collars, you can wear rounded jewelry underneath, you can also use earrings to emphasize certain parts of your face, and if you get a chance to take a look at my earring video, we've gotten a lot of feedback from that one and even the Hat video will help you with - if you are looking at the type of face shapes and how you want to work with them. The other one is a scarf, I always get mad when people tell me they don't wear scarves, you lose 25% of your ability to work with your wardrobe if you don't do scarf. If you have any questions on that please come in and we'll show you and how that can affect how you going to do some of the things you can wear in your face shape.

What if you have a thin face with very sharp cheekbones? I have an oblong face but it has very sharp angles/very sharp cheekbones/jawline.

Hey Marilyn, wikihow says - a triangle face is - Triangular faces are the opposite of heart-shaped faces - they're widest at the bottom and skinniest at the top. Triangular faces have long, wide and square jawlines and relatively narrow foreheads. it conflicts with the ruffles, end empire line suggestions you have shared in your video! AM confused now, can you help. As i seem to have a mix of square and triangle face, but with a relatively narrow forehead .

Wear them anyway, I know at least 3 people with really round faces who look bomb in turtle necks. They just do a bun or ponytail. 🤷🏻‍♀️

In a mirror, picture your eyes, and the width from the outside of each eye. That should help, when looking at the face pictures in the video, compare your eye width to the width of your cheeks. Good Luck
