Didn't get scammed at all. You did not do your due diligence before buying. This would have been simple to diagnose for someone with "mechanical knowledge" while looking over the car, instead of being in a hurry to buy it so you could turn around and sell it for triple your outlay. Got exactly what you deserved.

Yeah exactly, I ask so many questions when buying second hand because I need to know the history of my car and how it was treated because that'll tell you how long you have until you start paying the price for it! I’ve bought non starters and won, I’ve bought non starters and lost, but in either situation, I’ve paid a price where if it is worst case scenario, then I can’t lose. I’ve bought a non running car that needed an interior light globe. A model of Ford won’t start if there’s no globe in the interior light. I bought it for $50, brought it home, washed it, polished it, cleaned it all up, put a globe in, started it, serviced it and had it for sale the next day, and sold the one after at $4500. If you check as much as you can, then it’s a lot safer to buy a non runner confidently.

Thanks for doing a video on Marketplace scam mobiles. In your shoes, I would have gone to one of the wreckers as quite a few V6 Camrys get dumped there (some sadly quite clean, many in grandpa spec and grandchildren don’t want the car) and throw another whole motor at it. Marketplace tends to be full of shitboxes. I bought one intentionally as I knew it was a shitbox and paid shitbox money for it (currently sorting its many issues out). It will be doing things that only a serious shitbox can do (more on that later). However, there are so many scammers and dodgy cars there on Marketplace. Saw another one recently and couldn’t believe the disaster the guy was selling for the price ($3500 for a rust bucket).

I always take tools with me on any potential deal and tell the seller that I want to spend 20 minutes looking at it, if they object to that straight away you know there's a problem, if they say OK, pull the plugs and down with the borescope and check out that part at least, a bit difficult on an auto but turn the crank at least 2 turns and that's it, all ok? you have your bargain! if they objected then you have saved yourself 20 mins and walk away with your money. This was not a scam, they just bought a car that has a bad engine in it and the owner who sold it to him told him the car wasn't running. There's a reason why the car sold for $1,100. I've seen totaled or wrecked cars that were like 15 years old without the title and for parts only sell for $1,700 or 1500. This camera is actually in decent shape as far as the body and everything else it just needs to get an engine swap out which isn't that expensive if you go find a salvage engine and know how to do the work yourself

Fancied the 405 so pushed it into the workshop and found no. 4 cyl. full of water.Decided to whip the head off quick and check the gasket; bad news, the liner had cracked. Right, I thought, head back on and give the keys back to sales as there was no way I wanted to spend that much time and money on a cheapie. With this in mind I checked to see if there was a good second hand 4.7L V8, ($2000 including 6 months of warranty) and a fully reconditioned engine ($4600). I then went to see the car locate in Morwell Vic. When I got there the car looked like almost new, paint, panels leather interior perfect, new tyres too but the engine tik was an engine knock (big end bearing). I purchased the car for $1500, reco motor installed and for a grand total of $6700 I had a fully registered and insured 4x4. I still have it today in July 2023.

I’d always check the oil level first, and check battery Voltage next. Before handing over the $$$.

Not a scam, the car was advertised as non working ,at that point it could have been anything ,you guys rolled the dice and unfortunately you got craps. You should have allowed for the worst case scenario and offered a price accordingly.

Worked on a ton of these cars so you know how to tear them apart.... unfortunately don't know how to diagnose and could've found this out within 20 min of hearing a starter click

Rule one for buying a non-runner car: always make sure you can manually crank it. There is no way you did this so the only person who scammed you was yourself.

You didn't get scammed, you got stooged. Yes the previous owner should've said it stopped with a "bang". You can buy an engine for $400-500. But could you be bothered with all the work?

Yo, you know when every cashpoint is down that's a sign right?!? When even spiderman is tryna tell you not to go and you still go and get it. Well as they say... you live and learn, right?

Before replacing the starter u should have hit it while trying to start it to determine if the starter was bad 😂

Check battery voltage if it’s low and look at the belt to see if the engine is turning if they didn’t go at night they could have done this.

If this is my personal car, I will slap some a good piston and a good head from junkyard. This thing will run like a champ.

Exactly junkyard head and one piston some time and labour the car will run again. These guys are lazy as soon as it became hard they blamed the seller saying it was a scam

13:24 ''make sure to check absolutely everything'' 😅 ...or, just do so little as to pull a few spark plugs and just do the basics before you put it on the trailer...

You didn't get scammed. You just didn't do your homework. Even when I heard the click I knew it was the engine not the starter. The click was too powerful.
