Fela Kuti, born as Olufela Ransome Kuti was a Nigerian music maestro and the pioneer of Afrobeat. "Faces of Africa" brings you the story of one of Africa's music legends and his influence through music.
The fact that I, an Irishman 🇮🇪 living in Mexico 🇲🇽 , has loved the music of Fela since I first came across Afrobeat in the late 1990s (while I was living in Italy 🇮🇹 !) speaks to me about universality of music. Fela Kuti should be as well known and appreciated as Bob Marley or James Brown. Shakara oloje! Lots of love and respect to the people of Nigeria. ✊🏼 🇳🇬
Mohammed Ali talked some shit about African and why the honorable Mohammed made them wear suits. I was sad and embarrassed when I heard the tape. Then I lost the 100% respect.
I work with at least 9 brothers from Africa in Odessa Texas. A couple brothers name Mike O and Jamar O heard me playing Fela's music, they tripped out. They told me Fela Kuti was the Bob Marley of Africa
i am a South African, the xenophobic attack that just happened in my country made me to dig deep about the history of our African brothers...including music #NoToXhenophobia #OneAfrica #OneLove
All the way in Kenya and appreciating his vivacity. People should watch this video and learn the power of music and determination. Africa can be greater than we imagine it to be

13:42 let all the Ghanaians watching this video click the time stamp 13:42 Fela came back from America with an entirely new sound called Afrobeat. He changed his old sound (highlife) to an entirely new sound with a lot of precautions and style. 13:42 let all Ghanaians cease to claim the glory that fela sacrificed his life for simply because afrobeats is famous today. Ghanaians dont know that a laborer is worthy of his wages. God bless fela our hero and his legacy will forever live on!
Fela father was a singer and Ghanaians don’t even sing like him and mostly sing in Twi which only Ghanaians understands. They are lowlife always claiming what they don’t have and will never have
Fela only changed name from highlife to afrobeat...go and listen to all fela old tracks and u will hear his sounds did actually change...by the way fela afrobeat has nothing to do with modern day AfrobeatS
@@randya1773 If you agree that his sound changed, then I think we are saying thesame thing. 2ndly modern Afrobeats has so much to do with felas sound. Ex 65% of modern Nigerian afrobeats have saxophone jazz. This is purely influenced by Fela. (Fêla was a saxophonist jazz player) apart from the fact that many modern Nigeriian artist still sample fêla in their tracks, Fela is thier revered icon and source of inspiration. I advice y’all to promote your highlife and fight for your own success.
Let all the Nigerians watching this video know that he was only able to create Afrobeat after coming back from America and being influenced by Black American music
We can appreciate his determinations. And put in the hard work and dedication in order to replicate the enthuasiasm for his artistic prowess and express that into our given activities; place of learning, place of work e.t.c
He's a legend, "only Nkrumah and my mother" walked on the street with people to fight for their right....today politicians don't live in their real communities anymore...colomental...Fela your legacy lives on..
Fela was beautiful inside and out. His music was on another level. People like Kuti only come around once in a lifetime. He was a true musical genius and political activist; a true humanitarian and the ultimate alpha male. He was the real deal: an aristocrat of the highest caliber.
RIP Fela. You were a true messenger and pioneer for us Nigerians. The man fought just to get the message out there. At the end he was successful and now a legend in everyone’s heart. Fela was the original 2pac for the black community.
I am still wondering why people always refer to Fela as just the father of afrobeat. He just like Bob Marley being the king of reggae is the king of afrobeat. It's about time we give him his due credit.
Their is no Nigeria Jus Africa you will see. That would be like me say I envy Kingston because I live somewhere else in Jamaica . or I envy Abuja because I'm from lagos
This is music with a purpose. Fela opened our minds about this world and about his experience as a Nigerian and the corrupt politicians who helped the west to loot Africa. Long live Fela, all the way from South Africa ❤❤
Yes. He's very great.. he has the love of his people at heart.. Fela Anikulapo Ransom Kuti LOVE Nigeria.. May his soul rest in perfect peace. He's Our Hero Our father..🙏👍👍💕
@Daughter of Enoch Who is Enoch, when talking of Fela Anikulapo Kuti? Huh? Fela is a genuine African hero that lived most of his illustrous musical career fighting for civil and equal rights. Always remember these about the great musical genius and rid your thoughts of all that negative mumbojumbo.
@Daughter of Enoch Ara e lo n bawi. Lehin ko soji ara re. Ile la ti n keso lo s'ode. Omoale ni fi owo osi ju'we ile baba e. Tabijubelo, iwo omo karojire le sebayi ma fo'hun lori internet. Ranti omo eni ti wo nse. Now, take these truths and especially those of Fela's teachings and put to good use.
Lemmy Garioku. Kudos. I am in my 60s, i live & work in the United states. Having lived my younger days in 9ja, practised law, also now a minister of the Gospel. Fela s story through life will not cease to amaze and influence my thinking , EVEN NOW
As a Black American, thank you for acknowledging Sandra and the role his time in America where he learned radical Black thought from this part of the diaspora played in Fela's approach to music and the evolution of his sound. Often this is glossed over. We're more connected than separated; despite the oppression the African and his descendants have been subjected to and continue to fight against. Let us come together.
Desmond Ampofo I was once told Fela had an unbelievable love for Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. I didn't know why until today. Africa first mindset Nkrumah had can't be replicated.
@@naletsanaele sowore has an history of activism from his university days. he runs an independent news agency that also exposes the corruption in the Nigerian elite. he ran for the last presidential election but lost. currently he's in jail held without any justification by the Nigerian DSS under the order of buhari, the same military president that jailed fela... the same demonic leader is ruling again as a democratic president. I don't know why nigerians voted him. suffering and smiling under fulani tyrany rule.
a new Nigeria need to rise up to fulfill the words of prophet fela, his a man of peace and free world, a man who wants a better Nigeria , all the evil ex military rulers that rule then with all the evil they have done , they are still ruling us in this generation with the same selfish and devilish heart, how can this country progress, I pray God help this country cause sometimes it makes me sad with the way Nigeria is going , no future for the youth ,every little son in the street is hustling or struggling, with Nigerian wealth and resources, Nigeria youth no suppose so
OBASANJO OBASANJO OBASANJO! How many times did I call you. We didn't know you are such an evil. You have already killed SLEEP. You too will never sleep the rest of your life oooo
as a brasilian, the biggest african diaspora outside of Africa, subtitles help both developing our hearing and reading skills, but this is just my own, personal, opinion.
@@CamaradaGagarin good point you made there...i remember very well when I came to the Uk from Nigeria that I would put subtitles on. I did this because of the British/English accent..usually when watching Eastenders..i did not want to miss any word been said..cause it does happen due to the accent..I still do so sometimes..learn diff things along the way too
Damn! I never knew all this about Fela till after watching this video on him! Wow! He was really a great man and deserves every respect accorded to him.. He jus wanted the best for us yet we went against him.. Oh Africa!! When will we stop being our own enemies? I am Ghanaian and I can factually say we did same to Nkrumah! Smfh! It’s sad!! We the youth have a task and we must really do what we can to make here a better place to earn utmost respect from the west!!! ONE AFRICA IT IS!!!!✊
I remember when I was in London. My ex-boyfriend friend play FELA’s music. I fell In LUV immediately. When I returned to NYC, I purchased all of his CD’s. Sadly, not much changed in Nigeria. I know , because I have a friend that live in Nigeria. Also, I watch and read the Nigerian news. The narrator forgot to mention FELA was influenced by African American music.
Specifically, James Brown on the music side, and on the philosophical side, an African-Americans lady I can't remember her name. She was the one that told him he shouldn't be trying to sound western. Fela went back home and came up with something more original. The lady even returned to Nigeria with him, and lived with him for a while.
@@ADE-of-LAGOS I own most of Fela’s music(CD) . I think the lady was name is Sandra. She sang on Fela’s album UPSIDE DOWN. Roy Ayers was on the album too.
I love that Burna Boy schools people (black&white) what Afrobeat is, who created Afrobeat, & who he gets his inspiration from. That is very important in today’s society because white ppl naming it “Afrobeats” like it was just created all because Justin Bieber hopped on WizKid remix. Fela Kuti needs to be appreciated & known because he created a style of music that’s spiritual! And Fela Kuti stood for something so strong he sacrificed his body at times so others can know that they deserve more! Fela Kuti is an ICON!
While Fela Kuti is often credited as the pioneer of Afrobeat, it is true that Geraldo Pino, a Sierra Leonean-Nigerian musician, also played a significant role in the development of the genre. In fact, Pino is often referred to as the "Godfather of Afro-Pop" due to his influence on the sound. Pino's music was characterized by a fusion of traditional African rhythms with Western pop and funk music, which laid the foundation for what we now know as Afrobeat. He rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s, and his music was particularly popular in West Africa. While Fela Kuti is often credited as the most prominent figure in the development of Afrobeat, it is important to recognize the contributions of other artists, including Geraldo Pino. The genre has been shaped by a range of musicians and influences, and its history is complex and multifaceted.
So Geraldo Pino was around long before fela started to do his music, most of these musicians music are created fr different genres of music sounds different cultures so hats off to all the creators of afro beat ,reggae, reggae dancehall, afro pop, afro punk,American style, calypso whatever the creation well done
Woww. This was epic. I loooove Fela. I listen for 6-7hrs a day some days. It's great in the background or focusing. Prophet. Oh and love for John Contrane too
Thanks. I send my warm greetings to the Kuti's and Fela's fans. I appreciate the Pope and other Spiritual leaders whom Fela used to pass a germaine message to us. He was a gift to us. Virtually, all he talked about, is still a reality till date. His distractors focused on his vices, to portray him as a trouble marker and a man that rants. Fela, was a man of conviction, visioner and philosopher. His conviction virtue can be seen, when he opted to study Music instead of Medicine that is parents wanted. He was loved by several women because, he was real.
