I love how you made sure to point out that “mild” does not mean “easy.”

I appreciate that too, but mild does not capture the grinding pain of swapping between moods multiple times a day, especially when you need to get stuff done and people in your family or work rely on you.

I was diagnosed today with Cyclothymia. For over 20 years or so, I will go through times of extreme motivation. I feel as if I am at the top of the world, as if there aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish all of the projects I eagerly start. Then out of nowhere, as if someone just threw water on a fire, I will lose all motivation and go into a depressive state. In these states, I will sleep for days, will barely eat or drink, and have no regard for my personal care. I have always knew this wasn't normal but have been too embarrassed to mention it before because I felt I was just weird. I thought, no one I knew was like this except for people that are bipolar. I wondered if there was a "bipolar light" or something like that. There is, and it's called - Cyclothymia. Knowing now what is wrong and that there is an actual diagnosis, makes me feel a lot more comfortable accepting with my newly named affliction.

Stepha Reno i’m so glad you found my channel and finally got a diagnosis. Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. The more people talk about what they’ve been through, the less alone others might feel. One of the reasons I started this channel was because of how afraid people are to talk about their struggles. Most peoples lives aren’t as perfect as they make them look on Facebook LOL. Everything you described is so normal, and it definitely feels great when you have a name for the monster. I hope you feel very welcome on this channel and stop back by anytime :-)

I feel like this MAY be what I’m experiencing. I’ve been diagnosed ADHD (no hyperactivity, only mentally) but my psych is wondering about bipolar. I was diagnosed bipolar in my early 20s and was put on Saphris and Lithium. The drugs made me suicidal within about 30 days which wasn’t normal for me. I’ve been depressed since age 10. 4th grade. I’ve NEVER experienced mania for longer than one day. I feel like those few times it wasn’t really mania. I’ve never had never ending energy nor not needed sleep. I def have dysthymia (constant depression) and want to believe my ADD diagnosis is correct but there’s no definitive way to tell I guess. Recently a psych put out a paper on this - suggesting there IS bipolar without mania or hypomania. Most don’t agree as then there would be no opposite POLES. Lol I am SO exhausted mentally and physically ALL of the time.

Hey. Read your comment and can relate to this. Today I had a conversation therapist and they said I have traits of Cyclothymia. I have never heard of this and I’m a health care professional. Looking through the symptoms and seeing what you have written all fits. It’s a difficult day and hard to swollow. But it is almost a relief to know there is a thing but I also don’t want this diagnosis as an excuse for how I behave from time to time. Scary times.

Hey I just got diagnosed with bipolar 2 yesterday and I'm pretty confused. I thought that I had cyclothymia and the psychiatrist said that it seemed like I had bipolar2 and prescribed me olanzapine. What do you think I should do. I'm only 20 years old and I don't want to waste my life riding this rollercoaster. Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm sure I had cyclothymia until I took drugs at a party when I was 21 and that set me off to being full blown bipolar 2.
@AutomaticDuck300
@AutomaticDuck300 4 года назад
@Fresh Beginnings I'm not saying that the drugs made me bipolar but that I was already pre-disposed to mental illness and the drugs either set it off or made it worse.

I come back to this video at times just to reinforce and assure that my condition exists, it's not my fault, and that I and my psychiatrist have an effective relationship and plan for the rest of my life. My father died at 56 due to a heart attack and his tragic life was severely impacted by Bipolar 1. Believing that mental illness in the Bipolar world was/is all or nothing (meaning Bipolar 1 or just being moody) is a big mistake, but if you don't know it, you can't address it. My condition was revealed when I started seeing a psychologist. I couldn't take the emotional outbursts that affected my family, the night sweats, the panic attacks, etc. He was the one who diagnosed me with Cyclothymia and since then, my life has improved. Thanks again for the content, your transparency, and a forum for us to help and talk together.

Thank you Robert. You are opening the eyes of so many people. Especially the caregivers. My daughter age 16 has attempted suicide twice and been inpatient both times. I recently discovered the hyper sexuality she experiences and it was devastating. What breaks my heart is she had no clue that this along with the other symptoms of bipolar is behind the reasons for her thoughts and actions. She felt ashamed and dirty lowering her self esteem even more. I’m trying to educate myself on everything I need to k ow about bipolar so I can help her understand what she is feeling and how to treat it. I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve said some nasty comments to her about acting out on her hyper sexuality by I didn’t understand it. I didn’t even know this existed. I assumed she was just self destructing bc she had boundaries or self worth. Like what we call a slut. She has been slipping through the cracks of the system and not being diagnosed properly.

i got diagnosed with bipolar 2 at a very young age. I was put on many different medications to try and find the correct key to help. I spent most of those years in juvenile detentions. once I turned 18, I stopped all the medication and took to smoking weed to try and even me out. well now I'm 26 and I'm struggling beyond anything I truly care to admit. I cant express how thankful I am to have come across your videos yesterday. I struggle opening up to people about my inner demons and the times i have it usually goes bad. I don't really know how to find the proper help that I know deep down I need. I just have such a strong hate for pills now that I'm older because of all the stuff I had experienced while I was a child. These videos are helping me understand what I've spent most of my life trying to run from. Its very difficult trying to understand something like this when you know you are a bit different then everyone else. It gives me hope in myself. Much Love, and to anyone else fighting these demons? you are a fucking warrior!!!! Never stop fighting!

Ain't Bipolar a BASTARD, alford.associates Awe... what’s going on? Can you trace anything back to a trigger that started it all? I have really been struggling myself the last couple of weeks. Things you don’t see in front of the camera… I absolutely go through my own struggles all the time. I can trace it back to a couple of nights where I didn’t sleep well, and then ended up manic without conserving my energy. I should know better, but a lack of clarity is definitely a symptom of the illness I still struggle with sometimes. I hope the feelings pass soon my friend :-)

Wow...I was diagnosed with bipolar at 50. All of those years I was trying to fi d someone to help me...so sad when I finally was diagnosed. All of those years I could have been treating bipolar, which undiagnosed almost took me down. I lost a lot of years I could have been working on treatment. I saw at least 20 doctors since my teens. No one saw it, until I found a young, knowledgable up to date Doctor. She diagnosed it after our second visit. Mood stabilizers were life changing. Not to mention 2 medications my regular g.p had put me on we're exacerbating the bipolar symptoms. Glad to be diagnosed, but still can't get past how much personal anguish I went through. It has the same feeling as ptsd.

Cyclothymia describes exactly the zone I was in for years until I actually went euphorically manic with psychotic features and was hospitalized as Bipolar type 1. Everyone was blown away, I’ve never been described as “moody” bc the changes were more subtle with cyclothymia. I still have friends who can’t believe it.

All my life I've had anger issues with no real good justification. As a kid I would often break things because something didn't work for me such as a video game glitching and making me have to restart all my progress. Or other things such as math or simple things like a hair in my coffee. I struggled with math a lot, I would get super angry and frustrated over small things without any real reason to be, just becauseI couldn't do it right the first few attempts. I've self medicated for 11+ years just to escape my anger but it never really helped. I often drink when I feel good and most times it goes well, I enjoy the intoxication. but other times it causes me to be overly emotional and burst out with anger or depression. I notice the mania when it happens but there's not much I can do about it. For many years I've tried many types of antidepressants with very little success. I'm currently on mood stabilizers as well as antidepressants. But I still swing from mood to mood depending on the triggers. I'm easily overwhelmed and frustrated. It's been like this my whole life as far as I can remember. My mania isn't explosive, but it's noticeable enough compared to a calm and collected state of mind. Im convinced I have type 2 with hypomania, I do have what others consider delusions but they are real to me. I've had hallucinations and because of that I've sought out help. I dont want to become worse. I've had enough of this illness. I just want it fixed. I've spent most of my life anxious and over-worried, depressed, and angery for no good reason. I feel like my reasons are good enough but others just think I'm wrong or delusional or I'm not putting enough effort into things. I'm fairly educated, I've managed to graduate college with an associates degree in science and my mania made me think I could be some great scientist. Even though I didn't do as well as I had hoped in my classes. I feel disassociated with a lot of life, like I can't relate to anyone enough. I feel stuck and unable to surface from this hole I'm in.

Thanks for the video and your channel, we did really need it. I was diagnosed with cyclothymia last year, I have to say that to me is the biggest nightmare I can have. I feel like a have a bomb inside of me that never know when it's going to explode. If you are happy you know it is not going to last too much and If I feel depressed you feel like hell. I have insomnia for a few days and after that I sleep like an angel. Nobody really understands as much as they tell you they do, not your partners or friends or parents. Medication is the next worst thing, to me Lythium is not doing too much, I still feel the ups and downs and if I take a little bit more I feel like a toy without emotions. I want to encourage anyone who is in this journey to not loose your faith and keep on trying doctors until you find the right one with the right treatment to you.

I'm 35 and despite the patterns of mood and overall dysfunction in my life , I've found it hard to accept that it lives up to bipolar. However, I've taken a bunch of online tests, and always break their scales. I even took one for cyclothymia, and tried to be as conservative in my answers as was still honest, and it told me I surpass the criteria. Based on all the tests, and self-education, I'd say I'm bipolar II. What's really prompted me to start taking my symptoms more seriously, is that the moods recently went from maybe a handful per year to suddenly several per day, seemingly over night. It's rather distressing. The change happened after my latest (and what I can now only describe as) hypomanic episode. It was like a switch flipped or somebody suddenly turned a knob up to 11 in my brain. Thankfully, it has slowed back down a bit over the weeks since it started, but it's still too much. I suppose the main reason I've gone this long with it, is because very few people have had to live with me (outside of family, among whom some are bipolar and others...well, let's just say they're "some kinda crazy" but idk what) so I just blend in there. Romantic relationships are woefully unstable and never last. My one marriage didn't last more than a year (really only half) b/c I was out of control (pretty sure there's a nasty personality disorder at play too). Also, I'm an alcoholic which seems to go a long way toward managing my moods (but not so much in managing my life). I guess the CNS depressant keeps me from getting too wild when I'm up, while also keeping me upright and feeling good enough not to kill myself when I'm down. But I can't drink 24/7 even if I wanted to, so there's no way to manage it now that it's cycling so erratically. Trying to get the courage to go get help, buuuut...The alcoholism is making that very very difficult b/c I know it's one of the first things I have to face. I mean, I have to face it eventually one way or another whether I have bipolar or am just delusional or something, either way......

+statikreg There are usually Crisis Lines or Help Lines in most cities these days you can call and ask for a good doctor to call for appointment and/or call in times of crisis or bad depressions or manias. Or go online and enter 'Mental Health Clinic and your city, state' into whatever search bar (Google , Bing etc) is at the top of your computer or cell. A list should pop up of potential drs you could make an appointment with. When you go talk to the dr, take a list of : #1) your top 10 screwed up life events and #2) a list of the symptoms you have that worry you that you are bipolar. If you have hallucinations ever, if you have periods of time where you are so depressed it's very hard to keep doing whatever you are supposed to be doing, to get up or go to work or brush your teeth and bath, If you are excessively eating or not eating nearly enough, if you can't sleep or you go days just wanting to sleep and not get up. You need to write down if you have suicidal thinking or homicidal thoughts.If you can't control yourself -in what ways it is hard to control yourself. How often you cry, how long. #3) List what your top 3 closest relationships are like now and what the last 3 before now were like. Why did they end ? Did your behavior cause them to end or not ? Using this info, discuss the lists with a dr. and ask them to test and evaluate you. Doing all of this is your start, your first steps towards having a happier more fulfilling life and you owe it to yourself to be as happy as possible with this one life you have. A doctor is not going to make you quit drinking , but with the help of a good dr. , or therapist , you may come to that decision on your own, and then they can help you as you go through that . To treat the underlying mental health issue , it helps if there are not substances being added to you that are clouding your thinking and behavior because, for example, an alcoholic may say and do a lot of things they never would do or say sober , so it gets very difficult to know what parts of your life and emotions are due to a habit or addiction, versus being due to cyclothymia or bipolar disorder.You'd be amazed how much better you'll feel if you stopped self medicating with alcohol (because hangovers, liver damage, not to mention the cash expense that goes along with alcohol abuse and the relationships killed by alcoholism's results are NOT a good trade off for the calming effect alcohol has .) You need a medicine that actually works on the real problem without all the negative baggage alcoholism brings along with it , you need a med that actually works to calm the mind some and level out your thinking and reactivity, Get help , take charge of it and decide you want something better for yourself. You'll NEVER regret that decision. You will suffer so much less inside and so will everyone around you.

I recently believe I was misdiagnosed as depressive disorder. Took depression drug called zolof smoked weed on it and went into full blown psychos for two days which ive never experienced. After watching several videos on mental health diagnosis speaking to friends and family I believe now I have bipolar 2. I only went to see councilor during depressive state or after a depressive state during hyper mania state. So either appeared really depressed or like a really happy positive guy. I'm rooting for you! I was diagnosed several years ago and found that when the diagnosis was revealed to me and a path to help was identified, it changed my life. My father was Bipolar 1 and I used him as a gauge for me, which was the worst thing I could have done all of those years. Who knew Cyclothymia existed? Not me. Anyway, know that there’s competent, effective help and that the use of medication can be effective, as long as you and your psychiatrist have a plan.

i always feel insecure to talk about my mood experience, but your video makes me want to be open about it, i always tried to behave as normal as i could as i grew up but sometimes i just couldn't hold it, my friend said that i might be just a very moody person but i feel different, i always feel that i have something wrong within. emotionally, i feel like i am in roller coaster where there are so many ups and downs, but i don't have emotion pattern like bipolar type 1 or 2 where one episode can last for several weeks/months, the mood swing is real and it doesn't take a long time to change. i've been doing a research by reading journals and articles about personality disorder, and i ended up with this, cyclothymia. i don't want to self-diagnose since i don't have a competence to do so, and i do still doubt it since there are several other mental disorders that resemble my behaviour. i just want to talk about it with someone and i want them to know that it's real, i don't want to hurt anyone anymore, and i just can't stand with the guilty feeling every time i do something reckless that i hardly control.
