Ronnie Wood's tone is filthy, nasty, and one of the best guitar sounds I've ever head. God I love his playing! Faces was a kick-ass band, and every member of the band was a legendary, epic level musician.
Transcending tune . When I was a teen some 30 years ago and dance music and Hip hop were the dominant emerging musical genres , I would spend hours trying to master this on my guitar .
That opening guitar riff by Ronnie Wood has to be one of greatest in the history of rock and roll. If it doesn't make you nod your head and put a grin on your face then you've come to the wrong video. Great stuff.
For one blindingly dazzling moment, this was the world's greatest rock and roll band. Rod sings Mick under the table here, and Keith only rarely, "Can't You Hear Me Knockin," displayed Ronnie's "fat sound" demonstrated so powerfully in this, perhaps, the most commanding intro in rock history. And then, of course, the whole thing went to hell. Wood's performance helped cement his gig with the Stones, and Rod needed to know if he was sexy. Even the inimitable Tetsu Yamaguchi couldn't save it, try as he might, following "A Nod's as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse." Anything this good isn't meant to last. So, every now and then, I come back to enjoy a taste of what could have been. As a concluding aside, watch as Ronnie Laine nearly loses his head at the onset to Rod's mic stand and then goes on to play one of the nastiest bass lines known to man, woman, or beast.
Everything you wrote, was intelligently written because it was all true. At least that's the way I read it🌹. When I go on RU-vid every once in a while I come across a person like yourself who was there, who saw the potential of Rod, Ronnie and the others to become what they are today. These days🌹. I love to hear the stories in the knowledgeable way that you described it. I was never in the music industry, I just liked what I heard . Your comment seemed to be telling me, you were right in the middle of it.all 😮 I love those kind of comments. That you just wrote I am actually hearing it from person who was standing right there🕊️ watching to see what these young boys were going to become with regard to their musical talents. 💥Thank you! I love a good reading and that's exactly what you gave me. Finally, I got to read something worth reading. Thx💐💐 Have a great day!😊
The Faces and the Small Faces were amazing and wild and raunchy live compared to on record. The Small faces were more ‘mods’ on album but live they could raunch out and be bluesey like the Yardbirds. Ronnie Lanes bass was driving. And Kenny Jones on Drums and Ian Maclagen on keyboard. He played with the Stones and toured with them. And of course Woody. I always wished the Stones would play this live for a hoot. He’ll they did Love Train by the O Jays live. It was great.
The legend goes that Rod Stewart was reluctant to leave the band to his solo career because they were such good friends and had an amazing time when toghether
The genius of Rod Stewart here is that even being the extroverted showman that he is he doesn't try to hog the limelight from this incredible band. If only Axl Rose and David Lee Roth had learned that lesson......
It's all personal opinion from you & that's cool...however you feel is well on you not everyone is feeling that way and that's the deal dude...is it possible you've posted personal opinions without being backstage with the band and knowing intimately how they bandmates that is used the leads too achieve fame and overlooked alot. Assumption redressed as a opinion you deem as a fact because your way of viewing a powerful lead male in a major band in a powerful medium like music? I gotta feeling you know that but we all view differently. I worked with all of them for short periods of time & aside from big egos they take in big blame for things viewed by fans who have no full idea what bandmates really felt Truthfully they don't care... they know you can't please everybody fan or otherwise... We can agree to disagree and just enjoy the tunes.
Fans of both the Small Faces and the Faces have to love this track. It combines everything that was great about the Small Faces rhythm section: the criminally underrated Kenney Jones, the melodic bass playing of Ronnie Lane, and the jazzy wurlitzer electric piano work of Ian MacLagan, and replaces the irreplaceable vocals and guitar of Steve Marriott with the vocals of Rod 'The Mod' Stewart and the guitar work of slide master and future Stone Ronnie Wood. Mind you, Stewart and Woody had just left the Jeff Beck Group. Needless to say, they pulled it off. The Faces were known as the sloppiest, drunkest band on the planet, sort of the Replacements of the 70's, and they didn't hold it together for long. But, while they were here, they were The Baddest Band on the Planet!
Just came across this whilst educating my 26 year old daughter why Barry Manilow and Rod Stewart are NOT “like the same person” 🤦🏼♀️ you sing a few moldy oldies in your advancing years and suddenly you “both have big noses and bad hair” and you’re Barry Manilow I can’t even
Imagine if this group stayed together. We'd be talking top 5 bands of all-time. While their time together was short-lived, they put out some great songs. Very tight band.
I can't get enough of this video, I swear these guys nailed this one dead on, with the breaks in this song it's amazing how well they timed it. I have to say even though I am a Stones lover, this is the best live version of any rock song I have ever heard.
This is rock and roll perfection . The funky rhythm, the dynamic arrangement , the images conjured up in the lyrics ( Stay with me ..but don't be here in the morning ) Rod's gravelly voice, the great keyboard work , Ronnie's slide work ,the bass etc..I think this is among the classics of Rock and Roll songs
Rod Stewart and Faces was my first concert in Boston. I treasure that memory ! People smoking pot......in the venue....I was just out of H.S. and didn't smoke or drink but I was so excited ! ❤ May 1973 in the Boston Garden.........
The Olle Garden was a great arena despite not so great acoustics to see a show because it was just as gritty as the music . I saw many a show there too numerous to mention much less remember haha right up until 1980 . Pink Floyd in 75 could never be topped. I’ll leave it @ that . 😎
I can't think of a song better than this that to me defines what rock n roll is...Everything is perfect, what a guitar sound, what a bass sound, what a keyboard sound, what vocals, what drumming....
Omg I knew that voice in a dollar store in Alabama..... my mom let me stay in the store to hear the song , and it’s always been me favorite. Thanks mom she been gone for 3 years, but she always looked good music. Love and miss you!!
This was a band at the top of their game. Absolutely fukn brilliant performance. No sign of the superb Ronnie Lanes MS in this clip especially his lightning sharp reflexes at 0.17 when he avoids Rod Stewarts mic stand :)
I love the amazing sense of fun-the musicians roaming around, ron wood signalling the drummer when he was ready to crank out a riff-he and ron lane looking at each other with sheer joy as they coordinated their guitar licks-loose and swinging!
I think I listen to this song about 20 times a week. The studio release is simply perfect. The bit after Ian's solo in the outro when the Ronnies hit that 3 note crunch gets me every single time.
Back in the late 80s- early 90s when I was a little boy my mother used to play the best of rod Stewart In her Audi 5000 and Legend by Bob Marley and slow hand by Eric Clapton I didn't listen to Raffi (while she did get me the tape) this is what I was into I thank my mother to this day for being the coolest mom ever and I think that's why I work in the entertainment business now because of my love of music! this is One of the most quintessential rock songs of all time in my opinion thanks ma Enjoy 😊
I keep coming back to this.. I believe this was recorded in 1971. It is a magnificent film of a band at its very best and Rod as king of his world. He left to go solo and the Faces were fatally damaged. A tragedy really.. If you didn't get this.. you didn't get r&r. Fabulous. WF
I so love this.. and it has had a lot of airtime and movie usage and stuff over the years. The 70's were my time really and I saw Rod and the Faces 3 times before he went solo and Rod again after that. The Faces were at the top of their game and when Rod left, they were terminally damaged. A great shame. Rod was a magnificent showman and performer. Wonderful. This song haunts me.. I should have it as my theme tune.? WF
He did not leave The Faces to go Solo William. He actually had a solo contract that he put on hold for the Faces. The Faces broke up when Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones.
Raindogg TV Well, well.. All these 40 odd years I have believed the things that I wrote above.. and put them out as I have here. Well done yourself.. and thanks for that. WF
-LOL You obviously don't know how BBC TV worked back then. Rod and Drummer are live. However if you look closely there are no leads plugged into either guitar and I doubt even Ian MacLagan's piano is plugged in, and radio packs weren't a thing back then. Blame the Musicians Union but they wouldn't let them play live, but could do it to a pre-recorded track. I used to think Old Grey Whistle Test was a cut above Top of the Pops as they played live. Many years later my teenage illusions were shattered when I learned exactly the same methods were used on OGWT. I believe Lynyrd Skynyrd's performance was the the first actual live performance on OGWT.- That said it's a BLOODY BRILLIANT song, a CLASSIC. EDIT I stand corrected.
@@clansome Watch a better quality version of this video, and not only can you see the leads for both guitars but if you watch Ron and Ronnie's fingers closely you can see they are exactly matched to the sounds coming from their instruments. This is definitely all live. Better quality video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UtD8_iEgNvA.html
@@HatFog I stand corrected. I assumed that like TOTP & OGWT it had been done to Musician Union rules. In fact it's from a single season Series called Sounds for Saturday and this was Episode 2 broadcast on April 1 1972. There is a full version of the episode (in 480p) at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GdHLG_TTRCs.html Thanks for the correction.🤐🤦♂
Love all the yelling and woo-ing between band mates...even on the recorded version. Even as a kid hearing my dad play this I got a sense that these guys were having fun. My father playing this type of music back in the 70's was the reason I became a musician.
I never realized how much of a fan I was of the Faces', because I only mainly remember Rod Stewart', but when I was a toddler about 3 years old, I used to listen to all these songs when my mom played them on her stereo everyday as she cleaned house, and I just jammed on the couch, rocking back and forth, non stop through every song she played'.
I just want to say that I was blessed to have been born when I was because I got to enjoy the very best musical talent our world has to offer...and I love that straight ahead rock and roll...I love music...and the wonderful people who have inspired me to become a musician...
A few years back, Simon Mayo on Radio 2, played this as his opening track. Once finished he came out with the wonderful line, ' Well we might as well pack up and go home, cos he ain't gonna get better than that tonight." Damn right.
The 1970's, more great music per square inch than any other decade in the history of mankind. And I got to see it, sorry about anyone's luck that didn't. And the Quaaludes.....oh God the Quaaludes, the old Disco Biscuits 🤪🤪🤪.
@@dukecraig2402 the 70's were the best years ever. Wish we could time warp back there. I never got into the drug scene tho. I only know the name quaaludes bc isn't that what Bill Cosby used to drug his victims?
@@ksc743 Rock, Soul, Funk, R&B. All those were around in the 70's and all of them were on top of their game then, they were all in their golden age at the same time, what a decade it was for music.
@@ksc743 And that narrative about Bill Cosby "drugging and victimizing" women with Lude's is a bunch of nonsense, it's just an easy sell to people who weren't part of that scene back then and don't know better. A lot of things about the world were different back then, the party scene in particular, back in those days if you were a guy and you went to a party and had a pocket full of Lude's half the chick's in the place would be chasing you around wanting to "hook up" with you for the night hoping you'd give them some, and people weren't at parties back then just for drugs, sex was a big part of the lifestyle back in those days to, it was the era of sex, drugs and Rock n Roll, and to look at it through today's lenses and judge someone through them is wrong. Those women accusing him of that are nothing but opportunists looking for a payday. You can bet there's women out there in the world that if you ask them about me back in those days they'd smile and say we had some good times back then, but if I hit on a $300,000,000 lottery ticket the narrative would change to "He date raped me with a drug and I've been traumatized ever since, it ruined my life boo hoo hoo, but a couple million dollars and I'll get over it". People like me know better because we were around back then, EVERYONE was there for the party back then, it was a wild time and everyone was enjoying themselves, people don't get that there's people in the world that their lives haven't turned out the way they wanted them to, so when presented with the opportunity to point their finger at someone rich and shed some crocodile tears in the hopes of getting a payday that'll solve a bunch of their problems in life they're going to do it. Lude's were big pills so the idea that someone could "slip" one to someone else is just ridiculous, that leaves us with voluntarily eating them, and you can bet every one of those women he gave one to had already eaten them and knew dam well what the effects were, like I said everyone was there for the party back in those days and getting hammered up and having sex was the theme of the day. Times were different back then and to judge someone's actions back then by today's standards especially when the flavor of the week is all that hashtag this and that going around is wrong. All those women accusing Bill Cosby of this and that can't sell that nonsense to me, I was around back then and I know exactly what was going on at the time, especially with the "party girls" back then, they were just as wild and just as aggressive as guy's were back then, it was also the new age of "women's liberation" back then and they weren't going around with that "babe in the woods" thing, all of the sudden it was ok for them to be as sexually aggressive as men and that's exactly what they were doing back then, enjoying their new empowerment's, but now some of them looking for a payday are trying to play it that they were these sweet innocent nieve things that were taken advantage of and it's a bunch of bull.
@@dukecraig2402 wow, hit a nerve there with you did I. Like you, I grew up in the 70s and yes, although it was a more sexually permissive age for women, that doesn't mean to say women would have sex with anyone wanting it. That may be your recollection but it's patently false. Sure, women had choice but it was still a very misogynistic age where men viewed women as second class citizens - just as you Still view them in 2022 (50 YEARS later) judging by your comments. Even if we wanted sex that doesn't mean to say men could get it from us when and where they pleased. Sex is a consensual act. If you BOthered to watch Cosby's trial At All, he admitted to drugging his victims without their consent (pills can be crushed into powder you know). The women testified to waking up and having Zero recollection how they got there nor any recollection of sex. They just saw they were naked and knew from their physical symptoms they knew they'd been SA. Imagine SA'ng an unresponsive body?? You have to be one very sick pos to do that. Even with all his money to protect him and buy support and witnesses, the courts found him guilty of SA. It doesn't get more convincing than that.
So correct sir. One of the best lineups to take the stage. What the he'll happened? They could have surpassed th Beatles and the Stones...and I'm a fan of all.
So happy I got to see these guys live so many times back in the 1970's!! They were one of the greatest live bands ever-always a great show and lots of fun. RIP Ronnie and Mac. Thanks for so many wonderful memories and such great music.
Ian "Mac" McLagan on Wurlitzer EP-200 electric piano (on top of a Hammond B3 organ, not used on this song). My favourite keyboardist, playing my favourite piano.
Rod Will Always Be Bad Ass ❣️. He’s one of all time favorite artists 🎶🎶🎶❣️❣️❣️ Damn he puts on a hell of a show. Seen many times,. This last time 11th row 😍, in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas 🥰
Sounds like a fuzz face into a treble booster into a mildly overdriven amp, I could be wrong but the clipping characteristics are very reminiscent of a fuzz face style circuit.
Fantastic, just as it should be, every time I watch this it takes me back to some really good times, never to repeated . We were very lucky to have grown up in that era.
So simple and soulful, yet so rare. I would love to see a straight forward rock band like this now, in a bar or wherever. But every band now tries to reinvent the wheel, so pretentious. If you have a band please study this and pass it on.
Kenny Jones very underrated, great drummer who then went on play for the WHO. Great band great days compared to some of the manufactured shit that's around these days
