Fantastic lessons for the beginner (me) lol, You have given me the inspiration to go the next step from finding stones while prospecting for gold, reading books on stone cutting, next step is the faceting machine, thank you so much for simplifying to lamon terms for a novice. Cheers mate. Len, Australia

Hi, Thanks for the vid's very well done, I repair mechanical watches as a hobby and at one swap meet I ran across an ultratec V2 machine, well I wound up with it in a trade, and its been sitting in my shop for a few years. Now I want to learn to use it,,, again thanks for the time you took to make these videos.

Arya, thank you for your time and effort in making these videos, pls keep on doing this. Could you also make a video were to buy all rough materials synth and natural. There is much out there, but its all about the prices. And what are the pro's and cons for buying compared to similar materials form other sources. TY, greetings from Amsterdam.

Just watched the whole 101 series. Very informative, thank you. As a budding cutter it's given me a good insight into faceting. One criticism . You spent 15 episodes going from rough to closing and spend a microsecond on the actual finished product. I really wanted to see the conclusion.

Hi Jason. Thanks for your input! Your point is well taken. The videos were really meant to show the journey and avoiding the main pitfalls.

Thanks for the reply old bean. Sorry this is so late I don't check google+ that much. The journey was excellent. I got a lot from it. My criticism was indeed very minor! I really enjoyed your tutorials and discussion. Again, thank you.

just wanted to ask if you could have one more detailed presentation on the machine adjustment, I was not able to catch all the machine details and functionality. that would be great once you got the opportunity including the tools needed and the cost.

This was a very very good introductory series of "how to facet" videos. I have a collection of rough stones I've found, mostly sapphires but some emerald too, and I'm trying to decide if I want to invest money and time into a machine and faceting the stones myself. Another good video to have included would have been an explanation on how to use the cutting plans or diagrams and how that translates to settings used on the faceting machine to get those cuts. Also, some talk about how long it took to accomplish each step on this stone would have been nice like "oh it took me about 90 minutes to get these 4 cuts done." I need to get an idea of how much time it will take me from start to finish. Finally, a video on breaking down a huge chunk of rough stone to facetable pieces would be great. For example, I have a 150 gm chunk of crumbly sapphire that I could break down into many many smaller facetable pieces but I don't even know how to begin. Well, that could be a whole other series of videos.

+Yaddahay smarmalite Hey there! I'll definitely make a video that goes over how to read faceting diagrams, and how to input those settings into the faceting machine. That's something I have written up, just haven't figured out quite how to do appropriate filming. As for breaking down large materials, I've got two videos in the works for that as well.

So how does a beginner select the right faceting machine?
@ultratecusa
@ultratecusa 9 лет назад
Hi Scotty: Arya uses one of Ultra Tec's V5 Faceting machines throughout the video, so we are obviously keen to promote our own faceting machines. You can find more info at www.ultratec-facet.com

Scotty Thompson Ooh, good question. When I was first learning, I had the chance to test out some machines, and out of the ones I was able to test out, the Ultra-Tec V2 classic (from the 1970s) was my favorite. If you're trying to decide for yourself, I'd recommend testing out a few different ones by visiting your nearest guild or gemcutting organization. Since the initial cost of the faceting machine will "disappear into the background" if you end up doing this as a job, cost of the machine shouldn't factor heavily into your decision. Look at machines that have the most repeatability (meaning that changing the settings and changing them back gives you the same results), as well as ease of cutting (ergonomics), how easily you can inspect the stone while cutting, etc.
