I think what she's mostly referring to is if you are trying to steam your face everyday at home with the hope that it will clear up your acne or redness. Everything she's saying is true if the person excessively steaming their face and not cleansing beforehand. If you were to just start steaming your skin without prepping your skin your are definitely increasing the permeability of your skin and all the bacteria, dirt, and oil will now be penetrating into your pores causing more breakouts. Also if you're someone who suffers with sensitivity or rosacea as she said it causes the blood vessels to dilate and increase the blood flow and therefore redness in the skin. It's usually suggested to steam for shorter periods of time at greater distances when you have this concern though. So if done correctly steaming is still definitely beneficial to the skin, and her suggestion of a cool mist humidifier is amazing for the winter time!

Beneficial in which ways
@micahbass714
@micahbass714 3 года назад
@@cneer17 Well in a professional setting when one is doing skin care treatments steam helps to soften the skin so extractions can be done safely. Also since the permeability of skin is increased you can apply topical hydration and your skin will absorb that much more product.

I steam my face once a week or twice sometimes. She isn't lying about the redness bc i get that after steaming. She has fair points especially for people who have conditions that steaming would cause few problems on their skin bc two friends of mine stopped getting their face steamed She points out at 3:54 "it allows for more stuff to get into your skin", i see it as a 50-50 chance. Depending if you have skin issue or not but i dont really have any problems besides redness. And ive read in a few articles that it helps to absorb your skincare better. I guess her point could be taken as a benefit depending on the condition

Take what applies. I don't have rosacea and maybe of I did It would be a bad idea. Otherwise my face loves a good steam once or twice a month. It helps my active ingredients penetrate so much better. And I’m not SAYING EVERY Caucasian OR MELANIN SKIN! But we ALL know there’s a difference when it comes to certain things !!! Facial steaming somehow helps my skin. I used to have clogged pores and terrible hormonal acne, I tried Facial steaming the first time and my skin became clear. Then my facial steamer broke, my skin got clogged again until I had a new steamer which I have used for over a year. And I have never faced clogged pores again. It’s just my personal experience. I’m sure that persons with some specific skin conditions should not use it; however, it might help some others, like me 🙂

@EJS611
@EJS611 4 года назад
Em I’m also in school to get my esthetics license. They do teach you that essential oils/fragrance is one of the most common irritants for sensitive skin, but we do still use them and believe they can have benefits to the skin and don’t consider them to be the devil. We use Dermalogica products at the school I’m going to, which supposedly contain water-based versions of essential oils which aren’t as irritating. I’m still unsure how much truth there is to that, but the products for the most part haven’t caused any serious issues with my skin, and my skin does not get along well with essential oils. We do have actual essential oil botanicals for the massage/aromatherapy treatments we’re trained to do, but there are people who react negatively to those and so we just use grape seed oil without the botanical’s on those people. I even ask not to have them used on me when me and my classmates are doing facials on each other.

From my limited understanding she is saying that you shouldn't use a facial steamer just to clean up the skin, it's a tool that increases the efficacity of your cream, toner, etc.... So if you already have a skincare routine that you like the steamer might help to make the results better, otherwise you shouldn't use it as a standalone.

I don’t understand why you don’t recommend facial steamer, when you do recommend acid-based skin products. Like, facial steaming has to be less.. “harmful” than literal acids. Also, we already kind of steam our face whenever we take a warm/hot shower, how is it that different from that? I think that if we are careful while steaming our face, it is not that bad. Like if we: - Steam max twice a week - Keep a secure distance to avoid any burn - Don’t do it for more than 5-10 minutes - Only use safe, fragrance-free skin products before, during and after steaming - Use heavier sealants after steaming Then I feel like all the problems you talked about are resolved

As an esthetician(hate saying that), steam is for softening the keratin and debris that cause black heads or sebaceous filament. It should never exceed 10mins, and if the client's skin is turning red it's time to turn it off. People who turn red easily, have eczema, or rosacea do not need steam on their face at all. For these people, we also would not use a manual exfoliation and choose an enzyme or an acid. Lastly, steam could be appropriate if you're using a mask that will dry like a clay or mud. Never let those dry on the face because it makes the removal abrasive. You can use water to mist the mask while it sits or use the steam at a good distance to keep it moist.
@heatherramsey9190
@heatherramsey9190 3 года назад
Honestly I think this video would have gone over better if she had recommended a humidifier IF you are using a facial steamer. I definitely would have noticed the logic in that, because no matter how much you may be against it - facial steaming does have skin clarifying benefits. I have keratosis pilaris and my skin feels much smoother now that I have added on a steamer to my routine. I also have been able to enjoy cleaner skin thanks in part to steaming. I do agree that facial steaming can be drying and that you need to safeguard the overall moisture and oil content of your skin and monitor it. A humidifier is a great addition because it will help rebalance your skin while you sleep.

To remove any dried blood or crust I wld spray a little product on a Q-Tip and clean around the piercing. I did this twice a day (AM/PM). Keep your pillow cases clean, DON'T touch your ear or play w/ the jewlery, DON'T swap the jewlery too soon, DON'T oversaturate your ear by soaking it multiple times a day. Research the piercer, get titanium jewlery, keep it clean, and just let your ear heal on it's own. If u do too much, it will prolong the healing time.

Happy Saturday! Dr. Dray I went to repurchase the EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 and accidentally ordered the EltaMD UV Daily SPF 40 and found it to be identical to the DRMTLGY 45 sunscreen! Although it does blend out better with less of a cast. They even have the same pool float smell. Just thought that was interesting. Also, thank you for recommending the Walgreens Sensitive skin sunscreen! I was going to purchase UV sport but ended up purchasing this Walgreens one instead I really do love it. Same here! I followed doctors advice carefully since onset in late teens, and haven't had such a horrid outbreak since, or even anything minor. However, if I were to use anything with perfume/alcohol/irritants right now I would be asking for it. Won't go there. I won't use a retinol cause of my prob. Shame for I'd love to have something to help in that way. Upsetting that so many products claim to be "clean" also healthy for skin and the they stick in stuff that causes irritations.

Would you ever consider doing video(s) for Esty’s to educate us on the areas of that textbook which need correction/clarification?

Thank you for this informative video. I wish I had known this a year ago before I bought a facial steamer and ruined my skin. I used the steamer and a strong salycilic acid cleanser at the same time and ruined my face. I went from a few small pimples to my whole face covered in less than a week. A year and four medications later I am still dealing with the consequences. My face is better now but not it will never go back to the way it was before. I always attributed it to the combination of the steamer and the deep cleanser. What I learned from my experience is listen to the professionals and don't just try anything at home without knowing what you are actually doing.

You might as well tell people not to take steaming warm showers. Its ridiculous. Sure, I can see that advice for people who have rosascea, or people with sensitive skin prone vasodilation, etc, but there are people (often men, and some women with genetically thick skin) with very thick skin which produce tremendous sebaceous activity, and excess build up of the stratum corneum, which leads to congestion. The steam (placed at the appropriate distance) FACILITATES softening of the stratum corneum to then do PROPER extractions, which I know you ALSO don't recommend😴. Not everyone has skin like yours, so by your logic everyone else (who doesn't have rosascea or prone to PIHP, HP and/or melasma) should just leave congestion in the skin, or use acidic microexfoliatiants, which ALSO sensitize the skin, and often STILL don't fully unseat the deeper blackheads. I think you're speaking absolutely, and myopically.

I would have to agree with you on this one. I've used facial steamers throughout the years with great results. I didn't experience any of the things that she's talking about. I actually felt that applying my moisturizer after the steaming made my skin softer and more hydrated....I think this is more based on her opinion.....

@@BixbyLBC - I think she underappreciates the value of warm steam, whether it be used in the shower, or with a steamer (again - at the appropriate distance) because she uses Retin-A as her sole method of exfoliation. Not everyone can use, or is comfortable using Retin-A, so what are the alternatives for exfoliation? We all know letting dead skin cells remain on the skin hinders the process of product absorption, which leads to a dull complexion and excessive congestion in some (thick, productive skin types). Whether you use a soft manual scrub, a mechanical approach (like microdermabrasion/dermaplaning/shaving etc), or microexfoliatiants (like acids and enzymes) - they're all methods of exfoliation. I liken them to different vehicles taking different routes, but trying to get to the same destination. You just have to choose which vehicle and route you're going to take, depending on your skin type and contraindications. I agree those with sensitive skin who are prone to redness, and have rosacea should not sit under ANY heat source directly, neither should they use Retin-A! I like lactic acid approaches for sensitive skin types because it's a lesser AHA with a bigger molecule which doesn't penetrate the skin as deep. In other words, it's not as "hot" as say glycolic acid or Retin-A. But, she didn't qualify that in this video. In making this video she's disparaging other businesses, and dismissing entire swaths of other skin types and exfoliation approaches. In the end she said it might be okay for men's beards? At that point she conceded steam, in fact, is useful for softening keratinized debris at the base of the hair follicle. That same logic can be applied to those without "beards" who also have excess congestion due to inherently oily thick skin types. Steam in itself can be VERY useful in approaching softening and removal of keratinized skin cells when used appropriately, for SOME skin types. If you're going to use a steamer at home, unlike the benefit of a shower or professional facial, you would also need to get up and wash (remove) those softened skin cells after you steam, don't let them harden back down onto the skin. The whole point of the steaming step is desquamation of the dead stratum corneum, to than lift away, while hydrating with water molecules at the same time. Immediately follow up with hyaluronic acid, and an occlusive to lock in the hydration (to avoid TEWL). Steam has some hydrating and exfoliation benefits for some. I wish she would have acknowledged these points in this video, instead of dismissing it outright.
