Q:What pencil, paper, pen (etc) do you use?
A: I generally use a 2b drawing pencil and artist sketch paper, sometimes Bristol. Check out my Art Supplies video for more information. • Drawing Supplies
Q: How do you record your videos?
A: I use a Sony Handycam HD to record my videos and Adobe Elements Premier for editing
Q: Can I send you mail?
A: Yes! Make sure you check that the correct postage is on the envelope or it won't make it to me.

I have mixed feelings about chalk pastels. I love how opaque they are and how nice you can blend them. I first tried them for an assignment in art classes (we had to draw a self portrait and mine turned out decent) and loved it. But after that, I rarely touched pastels. For my birthday I got a very nice set, but I'm just scared to use them. They're very messy. But after watching this, I think I'll try to face my fears and get messy with art soon :) thanks for always being able to inspire me, Val ❤️

I am not a huge fan of chalk pastels either. So this past year in art class when my teacher announced we were recreating other artists paintings, I was excited! I found a painting online called "The Blue Bow" a beautiful 1600's portrait of two kittens. I sketched it all out, and I was very excited about my drawing and very happy with my sketch. But then I remembered how we were coloring them. Chalk pastels. I was not happy. I was afraid I would ruin my beautiful sketch I had worked so hard on, trying to use those tricky art materials. I wanted to leave it in pencil. But I did it anyway. I put those chalk pastels to the paper and I worked. After laying in the base colors I became determined to beat the chalk pastels and make my kitten sketch even better than before. And I did. In the end I was very happy with how my picture turned out, and even managed to look on the bright side that the texture of the chalk pastels was really similar to cat fur! And now I am glad I colored in my drawing rather than leaving it in pencil, even if I did have to use chalk pastels to do it.

Actually you can make really precise line w/ pastel, if you know how to use it. Is one of the main medium I've seen be used for photorealism: essentially you have to works on layer, the first one is gonna turn out really messy probably, but you can leyer them because they are really opaque.

I have found that working in shapes first with chalk pastels works best, and then do your lines last. Glad you faced your fears.

If you ever want to have another go, invest in pastelmat, pan pastels and pastel pencils = no mess, no dust and fabulous results (even using the pastel sticks you have here will barely create any dust on pastelmat, but do not press hard with them.) Create your base layers with the pan pastels and then draw the fine details with the pastel pencils, which you can sharpen to a very fine point. If you can use colour pencil crayon, you can use pastel pencils and pan pastel is simply a joy to use.

Years ago I tried chalk pastels and hated them too. A few months ago I decided to buy some and try them again, just for the heck of it, and now I'm in love with them. I love how they blend! But I'd have never found my new love for them had I not decided to try them again. I love this piece you did, and I'm glad you decided to try them again! Even if you still didn't enjoy them ;)

Hahaha I love it!! I love the drama. They also do make chalk pastel pencils ( you can sharpen them like a pencil ✏️ ) the piece turned out really well for a medium you really dislike.

Lol, that must be the daughter of the mime on my profile pic. :p I love the idea of a little girl mime. She turned out beautiful. My next art buy will include chalk pastels which I plan to use with watercolors. I like the fact that they do not easily stick to the paper and have to be worked in in layers and highlights can be erased in. It does seem tricky, but I like to be challenged or I get bored.

Cylindrical pastels are the worst type for precision. You can get more of a sharp line if you use shaping tools (the ones with the silicone tips) and also the higher end ones are usually square which helps, particularly when they are new.

My brother got me pastels for my birthday and i was so excited to try them..but i got so frustrated that i threw them in my cabinet and decided to never open them again. Few months past and I watched some videos and tutorials about them and tried again, i was better but wasn't satisfied at all with my piece and i never touched them ever again...i do have motivation to try and learn but the mess always bothers me! Awesome video by the way, i really appreciate your videos and when asked how i am able to draw i send people to your channel as id you are my art teacher. Thanks a lot for your amazing and wonderful tutorials

I LOVE chalk pastels! There is so much you can do with them! It's alot like charcoal! Just in vivid brilliant beautiful opaque color! I wish I could attach a picture of some of my pastel work here for you to see just what they can do! I think part of the problem with the ones smart art sent you is they are large and round (from what I can tell in the video) perhaps trying a thinner square set would do better for you? It works for me and allows me to get that fine, delicate line you were talking about. Also look into pastel pencils! Think charcoal pencils but chalk pastels instead! LIFE SAVER!!

Love that you tried them out despite hating the medium! I also don't love the ideas of chalk pastels or oils, mostly because I haven't experimented with them enough yet. I guess it's good to challenge yourself though 🙂 Loved the video and the artwork looks amazing! 🙌✌🏻

I hate chalk-y things as well but unfortunately my art teacher is in love with chalk and charcoal. So after about 3 years of failure and struggle I've finally managed to learn using it to some extent and will not do it ever again. ...unless I have to in art school. Oil on the other hand is awesome!

I always use soft pastels for a soft background, it really saves a lot of product and time. :) Although I've never tried chalk pastels.

I find chalk pastels fun, I've tried different ways of using them, one is softly layering all the colors I would like to blend before smudging or first rubbing it on a blending stick and using the point of the blending stick to get a presise way to color. Watching you was fun as always xD

I don't like soft pastels for drawing either. I do like them for adding soft shadows and stuff in mixed media art, but not standing alone. I think you did good tho! :D

Soft pastels are a medium that I've always disliked when trying them, but I've decided to take the plunge and give them a new go. I found out that pastel pencils means less touching (and more control!) and that Pastelmat paper reduces excess dust almost entirely! I also have some disposable gloves at the ready, just in case....

It almost seems that Smart Boxes don't send any mediums you like. But about those chalk pastels. I don't own any anymore but they used to be my favorite art supply before I fell in love with the dip-pen (c. 15 years ago) and had to leave the pastels for even less forgiven media. They worked well together but told me that they couldn't live in a same house and the other one should leave. Sometimes I miss my pastels while dotting with the dip-pen.

Oh Boy! Of all the mediums😱 in the world it had to be PASTELS!! 😭 I've tried them on several occasions (usually when a forgetful, well meaning friend buys me some for Christmas..) 😤 It's the mess! It gets EVERYWHERE.. 😥 AND, I still find bits after I've banished them to the Good will shop. So Girl.. We are on the same wave length. I feel for you, I really do... However, that is a lovely portrait of a little clown. Pat on the back girl.. X

When I was preparing to enter art school with an art tutor, I could only use charcoal and pastels ! I LOVE them. I can never understand how people call themselves artists, and yet are not prepared to get messy. If pastels are messy, what can you say about oils? Turpentine? What about fresco painting on walls. Sanding the walls, plastering them and painting with pure powdered pigments. The loveliest part is when you try to paint an elaborate ornament on the ceiling and paint drips from the brush and goes down your arm and under your sleeve. What about sculpture? Messy should e the middle name of any artist.

Liked the portrait. Not sure what you liked and didn't like about it. On a second note, I'm not sure why traditional artist feel the need to blend everything. I love lots of art where the artist has used the paper texture to become part of the shading and provide 'texture' to the image. Maybe you could do a video addressing that topic in the future. This was another fun video

That is a huge box for such a small collection of pastels. You made it work in the end, but I always make a mess when I art, no matter what it is, except maybe colored pencils. How can you stay so clean?

I have such a burning HARTED for chalk pastels, I can't stand them. I hate the fact that it's so difficult to make a precise line, I hate the way they look and I hate how messy they are. Although I do think this piece looks pretty good, You really can work miracles!

Can't you use them with brushes? I've also seen other artists use pastel pencils for details, and the sticks for bigger areas? I want to try pan pastels because they come with little applicators that look like they make the process so much simpler.

Every so often at school we did oil pastels and I did not like them at all, like chubby, messy crayons that smeared everything. Ugh! The impression I get from the chalk pastels is that you work with values more than lines to show your details.... something I know next to nothing about. Would not dream of trying them. Would add them to my guache, gelato, charcoal pile and never touch them again.

awesome video you are really an inspiration im 12 and i love art but recently my dad passed away and my family has been having financial struggles and it scares me if i follow my artistic passion that i might have financial problems having a cubical job just seem easier what should i do

Art can consume you. Don't suppress it. Just go with it. You are young enough to follow your passion. Give yourself a target date. Something like: If I have not earned X amount with art by the time I am 20, I will follow another career. I am sure that is what your dad would have loved you to do.

I will never try chalk pastels because of the dust or any kind of paint because of the smell health reasons. I am only going to use art supplies that make me happy because I do not want to spend time using supplies that annoy the heck out of me that's why I invested in more expensive tombow irojiten colored pencils and gave my Prisma's which were breaking every time I put tip to paper to my aunt who likes Prisma's.

but everyone makes their own art choices art is just a hobby I mostly only draw people girls in anime style so I can draw hair and fashion designs but I am improving my poses which is kind of annoying and stressful but guess what I am improving date your sketches people this has helped me on my art journey the past few months. And if I want to draw a cute baby wolf or another animal I will but I'm not going to try to draw something realistically because that is just majorly stressful and we have enough of that in the world art is my hobby for fun :)

At least you tried. I love watching Leontine van vliet use her chalk pastels. She makes it look a lot easier than I'll bet it is. I can see how portraits would be a little weird with the chalk. Leontine does some pretty amazing sunset pictures with hers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NCSCMoILAkU.html. I wouldn't want to blend with my fingers so I would wear a glove, but she certainly makes it look easy.

+Marina Tursan hi. Thanks for all your great questions. I use a variety of different tools. If you look in the description boxes of different videos, I will give links to different supplies I use. So if you like to looks of a certain art supply that might help. But really, as long as you are drawing daily, you are in good shape.
