Ubiquitous Surveillance helps only if the Xrisk only happens on the watched side. If it happens at all on the watchers side, and the watchers can prevent the watched from countering its efforts using its Ubiquitous Surveillance, then said Surveillance does more harm than good by far. ~@30:00

The potential benefits of ASI are infinite; infinite technology, infinite resources, infinite extended lifespan. Thus using Nick's same logic about existential risk, we can apply infinite weight on pursuing ASI. All efforts should be made towards advancing it. Even in the case that the ASI destroys humanity in order for it's own best interests, it is a far different scenario than other existential risks such as meteors/nuclear weapons because in a very real sense the surviving ASI will be our collective child whom lives on forever. Securing humanities legacy forever. Of course i still propose all possible precautions be taken to avoid such a doomsday scenario. But uncertainty will always exist, it is inherent to the very nature of our universe. At some point (sooner rather than later) it is our cosmic DUTY to turn the ASI on.

I wish there was more discussion about endowing our artificial intelligence with actual emotion. I think human emotion is often overlooked and underappreciated for it's value in organizing and better understanding our own values. I don't think it's possible to create an AI with legitimate wisdom without an emotional component. On a purely logical standpoint it might have looked like the only rational thing to do to nuke all other nuclearly capable nations at the earliest possible moment, for fear that they would reach a similar conclusion, but some shred of human decency influenced people to sacrifice some of their own security for concern for the potential enemy. I do not think the human race would have survived to cold war nearly as easily if we were all devoid of emotion.

For the voting thing: When you do maths or think like a scientist, or play Zelda, it creates new neural connections in the brain or strengthens existing ones, which help in tackling novel problems. What if voting had a similar benefit: You become a more public spirited person, become more pro-active, the fact that you vote makes you want learn more about politics, and opens up whole vistas of experience - because of new neural connections.

Has anyone here had very strange coincidences? Im talking so strange, they would make an atheist question if reality is a computer simulation!? I had quite a few.
