I came here from your comment on unintentional asmr's channel... I simply love these videos because of how interesting they are while you're not shouting down the mic to explain it
I got really excited when you said the display was vaccuum florescent. I had watched a video on it a few months ago and seeing it again just made me excited.
Your videos are awesome because you learn something really interesting while simultaneously getting really drowsy because of how relaxing you are, subbed man!
I've fulfilled my greatest wish - to become one of those learning tape thingies people put on when they sleep! Really glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks for the sub. =)
Towards the end of the video, I was thoroughly relaxed, half asleep, and still learning about how early calculators always showed leading zeros since it was difficult to hide. You earned a sub!
I'm very glad you enjoy the videos! Always fun to hear! =) Also yes, I was a little bit ruffled when I found out the video had been reuploaded like that, but at least it reached a whole heap of folks who enjoyed it too, so that's all well and good with me. Although I have to admit people getting asmr from my voice is kind of unexpected and perhaps even a bit startling!
love this channel, it's the perfect combo of relaxed and interesting. you got a permanent sub right here! (PS that display is really cool, thanks for clarifying why it looks so interesting)
6:10~6:15 It makes perfect sense to me that the display would not be suppressed during a calculation. When someone calculates on a chalkboard, or on an abacus, you can watch as the result takes shape. So why should it be different with a calculator? Do you have a slow motion camera? I would like to see this multiplication process in slow motion.
I went ahead and did it with some editing. It'd no doubt be cooler with a real slowmo camera, but I'm happy with the result: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9w4BOmWECBE.html
IMHO, those are some funky-looking characters on that calculator's VFD display, they kind of have a handwritten style to them. Still an awesome piece of technology though, definitely quite state of the art in its era. And to think VFD displays are still used today for displays in some DVD/BD players, stereo receivers, status displays, and such. Probably the last "hollow-state" electronic technology still in common use today.
Fluorescent tube displays were common even for such advanced calcs as Electronica MK-52 (which they ended production only after USSR disintegration). But this one is a really old type... And yes, I'm always curious what happens when you divide by zero in any old machines.
The answer to that big division there actually is 125.9638937681. The calculator said 125, which is correct (without decimal places of course). Maybe the numbers are too large for it to get the decimals? On an old mechanical calculator, the number of decimals you can get depends on the input numbers; maybe this one's design is just the same old, mechanical design, but made digital. After all, it's facit's first (or one of, I don't know this information) electrical calculator after many, many mechanical ones!
I’ve read all the comments where you’re busy with your degree and work, which is totally understandable. When uni finishes up, do you think you’ll have time to make any videos? I mean hell, even two a year would be a treat, hahaha. Excellent for falling asleep (and I mean that as the highest compliment). Subbed as soon as I found this video on the unintentional ASMR channel
Hey! I'm sure I will have some time. Right now it's a matter of things being busy, along with needing to work up the courage to put out another video after such a long time. =) The long delay since the last one has riled up the inner perfectionist and he's taken a dim view to just chucking something out there (in spite of that being the strategy so far).
We have an 1125. It has 26 keys, and a 16 digit Nixie Tube display, but there's some kind of electronic glitch now. When I turn it on and clear it out, all the digits light up 7s and 9s at the same time, no matter what. If I try to do any calculations at all, it goes into error. This started happening suddenly, maybe 10 years ago.
Nice old machine, but that display would give me a headache. I grew up in the era of vacuum tube displays like this and there were much clearer displays from the same time period with plain block characters and none of the extra gibberish on the display all the time.
Hey, I know you haven't posted anything in a while, but I just wanted to let you know I think you have a cute voice :) Hope this makes your day, or night!
Thank you. The patience after all these years means a lot! =) I will (hopefully) be graduating uni in 3 months, so life will look vastly different for me very soon.
I think I'm a very lucky person to find one of the best ASMR videos online. Sorry for not sharing your love to calculators ;) but at least i can leave a like. (excuse my mistakes if there are any ~ deutsch)
I just want to mention that i found this video 4 years ago in 2018 a it was until then that i heard the term "Giving Flak" for the first time. Now i use it all the time and people tell me its not even a real word. Lmao.
Yes, a sad fact of life about those channels are that they tend to take videos without asking. Normally (this isn't my first rodeo) they give decent credit first in the description. I don't mind that so much, it's ok to want to share videos with your community, as long as you ask. This guy was instead abusing people by trying to get them to click some dodgy survey link. I won't have my work used like that.
I have been trying to work out your accent. I'm from Belfast and initially I thought you must be from Northern Ireland, then I ended up in the Netherlands, then I was all over Scandinavia and ended up on the west coast of Scotland....or maybe somewhere in Canada. Put me out of my misery...where are you from? Thanks, that's some calculator you've got there. Pocket edition? Do you have an Enigma machine by any chance?
I wish I had an Enigma machine! I think it would barely be out of its box before ending up on the channel if I did. :) To answer your accent question, I would refer to this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qc1RcQU4O7E.html I'm a Swede by trade and nature.
Yes, audio has always been my weakest point. These videos were shot with an integrated DSLR mic, so I had no real way to crank up the gain without introducing intense amounts of noise. I've since upgraded to a better mic, so now the only remaining problem is me.
Major thanks for the interest. I really appreciate it. =) The difficult thing for me is that I want to create interesting videos where I show off something new. I don't want to make a video for a video's own sake. This becomes doubly tricky when having to consider a (quite exhausting) full time job.
